We came with another couple who are regular guests at B&B's all over the USA. They were decisively impressed. We came for the nearby Yadkin Valley wineries but found simply hanging out at A Mighty Oak to be quite pleasant. We sat on rocking chairs on the 2nd floor covered porch as we read or just talked as the stars emerged in the sky. Then we ascended to the 3rd floor for games (ping-pong, board games, TV sports) and reviewed the substantial bookcase. Of course, a huge facet of any B&B is the proprietor. We all recognize a passion for excellence when we experience one. It's there in spades with Todd, showing up in attentiveness to our needs and a pleasant, playful grace about him and his wife Lisa. And we saw his excellence in that 2nd "B" in B&B. We're talking as close to farm-to-table as it gets since the B&B's rear acreage is home to cows, chicken and plants. And, uh FYI, no smell in the air. Match freshness with culinary excellence and you've got an Rx for memorable breakfasts. I mean, I had never had a Scottish Egg and can't wait to see what Todd has up his sleeve next time! A passion for excellence shows up in every aspect of a business, but when it's a B&B, it can become quite special since they're sort of personal - I mean one actually lives there albeit for one or two nights. My mom died almost two years ago and I have not had a vacation since before being her caregiver in her last days. I never expected this few days get away to be so exactly what I needed. The owners. So warm and welcoming. They truly make you feel at home. I can't say enough good things about Will and Jennifer. The staff. Omgoodness. They have this sweet lady who cooks, cleans, and anything else you need who has worked there for 18 years. After she takes care of you she goes and gives care to her elderly Mother. I'm convinced she is an angel. Thank you Kathy for everything. The cabins. Private. Clean. You really feel like you step back in time but you don't have to give up your high speed Internet either. They are simply magical. The jacuzzi tub doesn't hurt either. The grounds. Completely perfect. Everything is spaced out but you don't have to travel far to get to the lake or take a hike. Our cabin literally had a view of Pilot mountain. There are grills to cookout. Free canoe, rowboat, and paddle boats. A gorgeous pool and a sauna that is something from the past. In a good way. The innkeeper, Sherry, is one of the rudest people I have ever met. It just blows my mind that she is allowed to serve in the hospitality industry, because there is nothing about her that makes you feel welcome or appreciated as a guest and paying customer at the inn. This inn is a real treasure and it is a shame that it is being represented with such a negative presence.

Now that my niece has graduated, we technically have no reason to visit High Point anymore -- but honestly, a return trip would be worth it just for another stay at the Manor. The home is cute and up to date in the small little town of Madison. It is the perfect location to their Main Street where our friends wedding was. The couple that own the home are so friendly and overly accommodating. They went out of their way to make our few hours there perfect. We arrived early in the morning so we could see the town and do a little shopping. Our room was ready by 10:30 when we called. We were greeted by three friendly cocker spaniels, who get to roam the house freely which should be noted if you aren't a dog person or are allergic but we didn't mind. We had the opportunity to choose the room we wanted (I am totally blanking on names right now) and we're offered the larger bathroom since we needed to get ready for a wedding. We decided on our original room for the space. Everything was clean and had that "mommas house" smell. The one where the linens are freshly pressed and the towels are hot out of the dryer. We made some small talk and were offered a tray of water and some fresh fruit! We were also given food advice as we were starving from our drive and we ended up at Fuzzys bbq. Her husband, John, was just as accommodating. He offered coffee, bottled water and several snacks for our trip home! They were so kind and I highly suggest supporting this couples BnB. We stayed in a king room the first time for a weekend and a king suite for the weeks stay. Both are comfortable, the suite's size and separate seating area definitely make it worth the difference if your stay is extended. King bed, very comfortable, quality linens, very quiet soundproofing with high ceilings and heavy drapery with modern minimalist wall decor. The bathrooms in both are nice the suite, another level of comfort. Walk in large shower with a vessel tub within the shower enclosure. This hotel is one of the higher end in town, it trys to hit those marks. A very high price point that does not live up to its reputation…read more We noticed multiple design feature that were simply awkward and not up to its purported level. Like the shower door positioned so you could not turn the shower on without getting soaked: a cold surprise every morning. It also seemed like profits are prioritized over good service. For example, there is nowhere you can get the usual incidentals of eating and drinking, but instead are channeled to the restaurant. But in the restaurant, as elsewhere, you discover the typical profit milking that all places have, but substandard service, as if they cut costs in personnel to increase their profit margin. Want caffeine in the morning? You need to go to the restaurant, with the time it takes, inflated prices, and substandard service, or venture out into a downtown area that is decidedly dicey. (The bus station is located only two blocks away and it is like every other bus station I've ever seen: don't go near it after dark and it's sketchy even in the morning.) It is clear the restaurant staff have had no training. During flu season, the server will deliver your water carafe with their hand around the lip where you will pour the water. Ditto with silverware: watching hand gripping the surface that will touch my food. Also, I ordered a two-egg omelet and a bowl of berries, listed as $6 each on the a la carte menu: $12. I was served and charged for the full 3-egg omelet plate (plus greens and potatoes) and a bowl of berries, at $17 and $6: $23. The first day I thought it was a simple mistake but it happened the next day. Just price gouging through markups. We were in town for a death in the family and coincided with a major local conference. So we were half at the Kimpton and half at the nearby Hampton, with its generic breakfast and architecture. But you know what? Both my wife and I agreed that Hampton would have been an easier and better stay. We just rolled downstairs for some caffeine and fuel to start the day. Things worked better, we didn't have the long wait and risk of getting ill, and nobody was trying to upsell us: overtly or covertly. Easy choice. Oh, and I stayed in a Kimpton a couple years back, in Cambridge, MA. MUCH better. There's something wrong here. Or maybe Private Equity bought the company and they are doing what private equity does to everything: platform decay because of squeezing profits for shareholders. That's my hypothesis. I'm sticking with it. And maybe it did serve as a template for the Empire State Building and maybe it did not. Who cares? It's overly dark inside and we can't see things. AND, to top it all off, we were awakened before 6:30 one morning by a fire alarm. We all piled out in the pre-dawn cold. So another dubious first: first hotel where I've ever experienced a fire alarm.
