Lux & Ivy is that store for those of us who love unique clothing and want other people to do the heavy lifting. I saw so many items that I loved (including some gold sandals), but I left with a long black skirt that had cork buttons running down it. See what I mean about unique?! It fit perfectly, and even better: It was 20% off! Even without the discount, the skirt (and the other thrifted clothing on the racks) were priced reasonably. Lux & Ivy offers not just clothing and shoes, but also jewelry made by local artists, beauty products, vintage home goods, bags and lots more. When I paid, her first comment was along the lines of how "barely anyone pays with cash anymore." Already, the vibe was off. Then, she asked where I was from. After I informed her I grew up in the local area, she immediately started rambling about her neighbors from India. It was completely inappropriate, micro-aggressive, and made me wonder if she subjects all people of color to this kind of treatment. To make matters worse, I had to return to the store because I was shorted an item due to a system error. The store was nearly empty, but I could immediately tell she was heated and just wanted me gone. I brought an item to exchange and asked about stock for a few others, which is a standard request for a store employee. Instead of helping, her tone got meaner and her voice grew so loud that it felt like I was being reprimanded just for asking questions. She literally started yelling at me. I could see the hate in her eyes, and it took everything in me not to react disrespectfully back to her. Out of pure exhaustion, I gave up and only exchanged half the value of my item. This was hands-down the worst shopping experience I've ever had. If you're looking for similar items but prefer a classy environment where the staff actually welcomes you, I highly recommend going to Charles Mayer & Company instead.

Somehow, I'd missed the fact that they'd opened a storefront in SoBro directly off of East 54th Street in the storefronts next to and behind The Clubhouse. I was in the area today and decided to check out some new businesses. This area tends to have a lot of fluidity in terms of business - not always because of closures, but because businesses also just grow and move on. Every time I'm here, I seem to find something new. United State of Indiana has ramps at both doors - both ramps are really well built. The interior is easy to navigate and is filled with a wealth of shirts, stickers, mugs, posters, magnets and so much more. There's pop culture themes, Indiana and Indy specific themes, political statements, landmarks and a whole lot more. The employee working was super friendly and helpful. I could barely turn any corner without seeing something I wanted to buy for a friend. Truthfully, there's no doubt I'll be back because this stuff is so incredibly well done. I ended up taking home two magnets today - one for the Monon and one with the Indianapolis flag. They're already on my fridge. This is such a terrific shop. I happened to pick up a magnet that had an incorrect price (they recently had to do a bit of an increase - completely reasonable and I'd easily have paid it, but they insisted on honoring the price as it was their mistake). I also loved that they had a wide variety of sizes for t-shirts, hoodies, sweaters, etc. Because of how my body curves with spina bifida and also because of my ostomy, I tend to wear larger clothing. They have it here. Such a delight. United State of Indiana started as an online storefront. That storefront still exists, however, I'm definitely one who loves that in-person experience and I look forward to returning here in the near future. As another accessibility note, while you can park right off East 54th, there's an accessible spot behind The Clubhouse and next to the back entrance of the store. It's where I typically park as it gives the wheelchair lots of room.
