Unfortunately, for the most part, our public schools here in Duval County suck. But I'm not…read morereviewing the schools here, I'm reviewing this building and what goes on inside of this building. This is where all the background activity happens that actually makes the schools run. All of the bills gets paid here, textbooks and supplies get ordered here, interviews for school staff/teachers gets done here, background checks get done here, etc. Also, if for some reason, you happen to need your official high school transcript and you graduated like more than a decade ago, you'll have to come here to get it. If you don't work here in the building, then you'll have to stop at the desk just inside the entrance to get a pass. In order to do so, you'll need to show a legal photo ID, and you'll need to tell them where you need to go in the building and why. Because there are so many employees here, parking will usually be an issue. More than likely, you'll have to park way out in the back lot. My husband and I use to come here all the time until just a few months ago when his mother (who worked here) retired. They have a cafeteria on the 5th floor and she would often invite us to come have lunch with her. This building sits directly on the Southbank. Inside the building, on the north side, there are beautiful views of the river, downtown Jacksonville, and the Jaguars Stadium.

Finding a place that felt like a second home was so important to us, and we're genuinely so grateful we found this one. Our daughter is thriving! She is happy, learning so much, and surrounded by friends. She's ahead developmentally, and they've done an amazing job keeping her engaged, challenged, and supported every step of the way. They also handle the harder parts of toddlerhood with so much patience and care, like helping her learn how to get along with others and manage big emotions. One thing that really sets Steam On Learning apart is how they communicate. They treat both parents as equals, and that means everything. My husband always feels just as involved, and that respect goes a long way. The staff is loving, responsive, and really invested in each child. Our daughter is very high-energy, and they work with us as a team to support her both at school and at home. The owner is fantastic, she is approachable, thoughtful, and always looking for ways to make learning fun. She creates such a joyful environment, and the kids love all the themed days and special activities. If you're looking for a daycare where your child will be seen, supported, and truly cared for, while also learning, growing, and having fun I can't recommend Steam On Learning enough. It's been one of the best decisions we've made for our family.

But it was cancelled with no explanation. The only other events before our expiration were sold out. I contacted Groupon and was told to contact Paint Nite. They have no phone number on their website, so email it is. I was told the Groupon would be honored past the expiration date. Fast forward to October 2nd. My friend registered for the event at Whitey's. It was sold out when I tried to book, however there was 1 a lot open the day of. I couldn't register online because it said my Groupon was used so I emailed. 1.5 hours before the event I got a confirmation so out to Whiteys I went. The setup was on the patio and ready when we arrived. Each station was covered with a table cloth and had an easel, blank canvas, needed paint brushes, the paint for your print, a cup of water and a paper towel. We checked in, got our aprons and waited to paint. The artist was wearing a mic so we could hear her and she walked us through the painting. 2-3 others walked around to help if you were struggling or needed more paint. We had breaks in between steps, music was played, and we all drank, painted, sang, danced and had a damn good time. Being outside on a muggy night meant it took a little longer than normal for the painting to dry. All in all, I had a great time! My artistic skills are nonexistent but even I made a decent painting thanks to the instructions. I'm already planning another Paint Nite with more friends.

My perspective for this review is probably going to be different. I was a visiting guest…read moreartist/assistant for an all day ceramic workshop for the juniors and seniors taking ceramics. I arrived early with Professor Cottrell from FSCJ and brought in wheels and supplies for the day and then checked in at the office for our guest badges. I did complete the background check process for Duval County Schools ahead of my visit. Being a school focused on arts was just fun to take in- art everywhere. The school plays music in between classes- fun or quirky music. Outside of the ceramics class was an outdoor sculpture garden filled with student and guest artists work! Including works from my professor. I was impressed with how clean the studio was and also intrigued about curriculum. Most of the students had never thrown on the wheel- which made things interesting. Our actual project was a handbuilt pumpkin. We taught the students how to make pumpkins from slab roller, to texture/surface decorating, to building. And we saved plenty of time at the end of the day for cleanup- which I am pretty sure both teachers were stunned about! I have a habit of keeping a tight schedule when doing events like this. My professor recently discovered my hidden talent and that's how I was invited to Douglas Anderson. I hope to return again for future projects- the exchange of ideas amongst creatives is always inspiring to me.

I attended this school when I was much younger, so I cannot comment much on the current curriculum…read more All I know is that most people who attended school here wore DA goggles. Lol. Back when I went, the curriculum was similar to college in that you had a proposed major and all your teachers were actually artistically inclined in some way or another. (I remember my government teacher was a guitar player.) The arts span both visual and performing arts (2-d and 3-d visual artists, dancers, musicians, vocalists, actors, even theatre technical staff). When I attended, they did not have culinary arts or graphic arts (since the internet was still in its infancy.... wow does this review make me sound like a dinosaur? haha), but maybe it has changed now. Who knows? Anyway, I wish I had stayed for the entire 4 years of high school, but fear of becoming a starving artist and teasing from my bro drove me out of this school. The irony is I now work at the creative department in my company designing things... Lol. If you've got a budding artist or performer in your family, definitely consider this magnet school. You got to audition, and it's much easier to become a student if you're a freshman. So don't wait too long to try out!
