On our first day in Glasgow, my uncle and I were looking to have a gay ole' time so I happily…read moreaccompanied him on a gay bar crawl. First up, the famous Waterloo. From what I hear it's the oldest gay bar in town and it certainly seemed popular with older gents. The clientele were all obviously regulars, and no one seemed very interested in meeting us new kids. Our visit was mostly uneventful, but before we moved on I treated myself to Toilets: The Ride. Yes, the toilet was not fastened securely to the floor which made for some unexpected excitement. You gotta get your kicks where you can.

It's got a diverse range of music and nights on the go, including (don't know if this is still a thing) an evening where only hits from The Smiths are played. If I've missed the boat on this one I'll be gutted, sounded great! I've only ever been here on its slightly more low key week nights after work. It's a lovely bar, with friendly staff, friendly clientele and a good atmosphere. It's one of these bars I always love when I pay a visit - good vibes, good music, good people - as I write this I realise I need to go here more! I've heard their club nights are outstanding so I'll be trying one of those soon!

I may seem a little harsh only giving 3 stars but I didn't feel I got the whole sparkle horse…read moreexperience. The place and staff seem nice, the decor freshened up from it's days of the old man Dowanhill pub. The place was buzzing when we arrived and we found the rest of the Yelp crew settled in the wee corner that became ours for the majority of the night. I never got to the bar so not sure what else was on offer, my man kindly did the bars trips for me. If I'm not sure what they have I'll go for a long vodka and that's exactly what I got. They weren't too bad, a little limey but overall good, so I had 3. I'm not sure of prices, I know I never got change from my tenners and I've heard from other people that drinks are a little steep. I didn't take in as much as the place was getting darker and darker as the night went on. I felt there was no need to dim the lights so much. I know it's to create an atmosphere but I do like to see. I did like the added touch of the charity shop picture of the week in the toilets. It gave a wee description beside the painting telling you about it and the artist. I think it should also say what charity shop it came from too, I think that would be a nice touch. The music was a bit eh... aye, em well different?! Not my taste, but hey each to their own. It was a good atmosphere but then I was in a good crowd. I would like to come back and try their food menu. I could smell good things from their kitchen as it hadn't long closed when we arrived. From their posters they look very active as well with quiz nights and also a knitting evening, which sounds very interesting. It even has it's own facebook page. They also cater for baby discos so encouraging for parents to do something a little different. I think this place will do well and hopefully on my next visit I'll raise them 3 stars up a notch or 2.

Although I live only a few blocks from this pub, it took a CMYE invite to the Monday night quiz to…read moreget me to visit. I still remember it as the Dowanhill when it wasn't that attractive as a pub so maybe that's why I'd been avoiding it. What was I thinking? Hip, casual atmosphere, good beer on tap, and great food that's way above the average standard of pub grub. We both had the baked haddock, which I was expecting to be some slightly tarted-up variant of the usual fish & chips, but it turned out to be a visual delight as well as tasty, and provided the perfect fuel to fire up the brain cells for the quiz ahead. We did have to wait a while for it to arrive, but the place was pretty packed so that wasn't a surprise, and they were very apologetic about the delay. It was definitely worth the wait, although if I hadn't been so hungry I might have taken more time so savour the taste instead of hoovering it up. I thought the prices were pretty reasonable too. If you like a pub atmosphere and good quality nosh, you could do a lot worse than Sparkle Horse. Although it was our first time tackling what is said to be Glasgow's toughest pub quiz, our team the Sparkle Dorks were victorious over the regulars (although it was a close call!), which means we'll need to return next Monday to defend our title. Oh dear; I'm not good with Tuesday hangovers... Finally, a bit of trivia - I remember reading somewhere that towards the end of its former life as the Dowanhill Bar, they discovered a hidden room deep in the bowels of the place with its own entrance where some guy had been living for years unbeknownst to the bar staff. I can't remember where I read this and haven't been able to find anything online to back it up, so it may have to go down as urban legend for the moment. But if anyone knows more about this story do please let me know!

We went in at 12 on a Thursday afternoon so it lacked people and therefore atmosphere, but that's not Distill's fault. The layout was great, soft booth seating as soon as you walk in and a more intimate restaurant setting at the back. We sat in one of the booths and were immediately approached by the extremely welcoming girl working behind the bar, we weren't sure what we wanted so she gave us plenty of time to browse the drinks and lunch menu before making our choice. One thing i liked was that when we finally decided what we wanted she allowed us to set up a tab, I loved this relaxed feeling towards payment! We only stayed for one drink in the end as it was approaching lunch but I'd love to revisit distill at 6pm on a Friday, I'd say it's bouncing and those still decks are spinning. It's got to be four stars as I didn't experience it with people there!

Playing a great mix of funky tunes that seemed heavy on using original hiphop samples, we grabbed a window seat and settled into a Joker IPA and an apple ale - all on the money. This whole area was very cool - great bars, restaurants etc - can't wait to get back here!

It's hard to believe that a bar like the Basement exists underneath a bar like Tennent's. While the…read morelatter attracts the polar opposite of a cool, youthful crowd most of the time, you will see skinny jeans, NHS-prescription glasses and multi-coloured hair in its dingier, more inconspicuous guise. Of course that means it's prone to the odd crowd of tossers, but generally speaking the Basement is a good option for a cheap night out in the West End and also offers the same menu and shares the same staff as upstairs. Peppered with gig posters and hosting DJs most nights of the week, it's definitely now geared towards a young student crowd (it was once the most well known gay bar in the West End), although the fact it opens at 7pm means it's not an option for inbetween lecture sessions. Instead the Basement really comes alive on Friday and Saturday nights when it is generally rammed. With low ceilings and not much space to start with, it can be a little unbearable at these times, which is a shame given it once exuded a real word of mouth feel ensuring it was always a good option for a seat and a quiet pint . Nevertheless, while word spreading may mean it's now not quite the place it was, it easily remains one of the better, more down-to-earth bars in this part of the city.

I tried to order a vodka+Coke and apparently my Chicago accent was a little too much for them as "vodka" did not come across clearly and took me over 4 times to say it. My friend ended up having to order for me, and I got a vodka+lemonade instead which is still a fabulous drink. Good times, good memories. Thank you Basement Bar!

What can I say about Revolver! It's an awesome bar!!!…read more Staff are really friendly, and the customers definately are the most "drama-free" of the gay scene. It's a welcoming bar, with great background music during the day and then even some Karaoke with Audrey on a Tuesday, and loads of DJs all week!!! We were going to popular GAY club Polo Lounge afterwards, on Glasgow's self professed GAY night, a Wednesday. Still, the connotations didn't click, until i was approached by a lovely young lady, who's head i had most certainly turned. I felt a wee bitty daft. As you may have guessed, Revolver is one of Glasgow's many Gay bars, just off the affluent Merchant City area. The bar itself is tastefully decorated and houses a digital jukebox (which is free to use) and a pool table, which we made good use of. The staff are friendly and chatty, and drinks pretty reasonably priced. The bar is also proudly owned and operated by gay managers which perhaps gives them the edge over other, overtly commercialised bars. Definitely worth a trip, a brilliant wee place to start off an evening!
