Situated on John Street, just across from the Italian Centre is Speakeasy. It is one of the most recent additions to the Social Animal group in Glasgow. Though it is coined as "Shhh! Glasgow's Gay Alternative," Speakeasy boasts a relaxed atmosphere and is not overtly a gay pub. It is attached to the often re-named building which currently houses "Committee Room No.9" and can be spotted by the humble door being dwarfed by a kitsch red neon sign. Again, like Home, Speakeasy offers good food and moderately priced drinks. The décor inside is again a clash with the modern and the old-fashioned, with plush felt armchairs and booths surrounded by padded leather walls. The only real tell tale sign that Speakeasy is a gay bar would be the 4 foot neon sign flashing "I love cocktails" and then sometimes just missing out the "-tails". It's all a bit of fun though. There are friendly bar staff and even a free jukebox, which is always a plus. Upstairs in the building houses the FHQ, Female Headquarters, which is a female only lesbian bar, with strictly no men allowed. Obviously I can't comment on it, but I've not heard good things. The main draw for me to Speakeasy would be the cocktails. In my experience, I've never had such a professionally made cosmopolitan without paying over-and-above for it. At £2.95 wouldn't expect for it to be made with the burnt piece of orange peel, as opposed to the piece of lime other pubs favour. It doesn't sound like much but it makes a big difference. The food in Speakeasy is also worth stopping by for. In my experience, you can get nachos and you can get nachos. In Speakeasy you get the latter. I don't know why they're so different but they go to the effort of heating up the Salsa, so the cheese melts slower. Awesome. I'm drooling right now to be honest. They offer quite a limit selection of main meals, as opposed to Home, but they food is none the less well presented and is damn right tasty. I would recommend the "tapas" style dining in here also, with again 6 plates costing £19.95 and the portions are slightly bigger, so better value for money. Speakeasy is also good for its drink promos. On a Tuesday, if you're looking for a classier alternative to the Union, Pints of Miller and a vodka mix are £1. In saying that, Sunday-Thursday, drinks are on average £1.75 and only £1.95 at weekends, including Strongbow, Miller, Vodka mix and Vodka Rockstar. They also have the option for a bucket of Miller. Priced at £9.95, the bucket has 5 chilled bottles and is great for avoiding the bar. Also, Thursday night is cocktail night, with selected cocktails priced at £2. read more
