The Classic Grand has swiftly become my favourite place to dance in Glasgow, especially when club night Absolution is on.
Maybe it's just me, but the clubbing scene in Glasgow seems to be subtly converging, with all clubs becoming one boring conglomeration of the other. Or maybe I'm becoming more jaded, I don't know.
But while the Cathouse on the weekend is prone to pumping out cheesy 90s dance like fellow CPL venue the Garage, The Classic Grand genuinely serves up an alternative brew of punk, emo, grunge and hair metal on the upper floors. DJs Dec and Barry used to work for the Cathouse and Garage so they've had ample experience on the scene, but they have come into their own here and gone from strength to strength, offering a slap-up mix of music for the evening.
I like the punk tunes Dec plays on the lower level because it's stuff people can enjoy if their in their 20s and early 30s (like the stuff you'll remember from school). Unlike other rock venues at the weekend, they don't just cater for the younger market of scene kids.
Upstairs, you can dance horrendously to Aerosmith and Motley Crue to your heart's content and no one seems to bother you. With a good, diverse crowd ranging in ages, it's a friendly, laid back club to go skanking in (that's the dance I'm talking about, by the way) - unusually so for the weekend. I've never encountered a drunken prat in here - everyone's usually in good spirits and chatty without turning on the sleaze.
It's busy but there's a lot of space to dance, loads of seats and stools littered around the dance floor, and selected drinks for £1.50. There's a lot of flyering for the club nights so the likelihood is you'll get in for free if you nab a pass off a PR dude. And you'll no doubt stick it out for the night as the DJ's keep you entertained (and the cheap booze keeps you going).
For gigs, it's a classier choice of venue, and intimate if you're lucky enough to see one of your idols. Rilo Kiley famously played here a couple of years back and I hear it was the best venue for it. My friend was pretty thrilled getting (almost) up close and personal with Jenny Lewis. They also host a number of Burlesque nights. It's a great venue for them as when the lights are dimmed, there's a classy cabaret vibe about the joint.
A great place to dance in Glasgow that is striving to add another dimension to the rock scene...and succeeding. Without The Classic, Glasgow's music scene would be a little more drab. read more
