Breakfast and dinner here on same day. Seating for breakfast required about a 10 minute wait. Freindly and attentive staff. Ordered the bananas and candied pecan waffles. Delicious and well presented but just a bit to sweet for us. Would liked to have had more pecan, too. Immediate seating for dinner. Ordered Ruby chicken sandwich and pork sandwich. What a mess! Went there for the first time during lunch break with a colleague. Ordered our food and waited as we saw people around us who were seated after us and order well after us get their meals. Ours finally came...had ordered eggs benny - medium. The eggs were basically raw on both of our meals. Eggs spilled out over everything...YUCK. We told our waiter the problem and he said wait, will bring out new eggs. They brought out two eggs in a side bowl...yes they expected us to scrap the gross eggs off and just eat these other eggs...no new hollandaise or anything. Told them forget it...never will go again and will tell everyone I know not to go. Terrible service and food. Go to Jam instead. read more

I always see it packed when driving by so went in with my family of four to try it out. Was busy as I thought it would be on a weekend lunch hour, but we got seated pretty quick. The menu is quite interesting and unique for breakfast: our group got the chicken poutine, chicken waffles, and breakfast tacos. None of us were wowed, but thoroughly enjoyed the food. We have been to The Ruby in the past and enjoyed the experience, but our last 2 visit have been disastrous. Something has changed and certainly not for the better. No offer of coffee even after a 15 minute wait. When we complained about the way in which one of the entrees was prepared, we were simply told that there was someone new in the kitchen - no apologies whatsoever and certainly no discount on the final bill. Service is slow and the attitude seems to be that they don't really care that you are there. It's pretty sad when you have to go and ask for coffee or refills. No one came to ask whether or not we were enjoying our meals or if there was anything else that was lacking. We've given this place a fair shot but really can't recommend it anymore. read more

Great place for breakfast. Eclectic menu, who would expect duck on the menu for breakfast. We had the chorizo Benny special and the mixed berry waffles. Both were very good and the service was too. Just had Breakfast at the Ruby. this would have been 5 stars except for some big gaps in service. The Ruby is located across from Mayfair Mall at the Motel Zed. its a funky recently renovated motel and the Ruby is just as cool and funky. We were seated promptly enough and were given coffee by our server. Then she disappeared, not literally as the space is small enough that she seemed occupied with other tables. We waited quite a while (10 minutes) before another server asked if we were ok and wanted our coffees refilled. I asked him if I could place our order as well, he agreed, gave me some advice on the menu and went away. We overheard the table behind us griping about waiting an hour and a half to get their meal. I was happy to see a manager come over and deal with this table and the food that arrived for them looked delicious so I was excited about our meal. As we waited there were three tables seated after us in a span of about 10 minutes. Each of those tables got their food before we did. by this time, we'd been abandoned by the servers who studiously avoided eye contact. I finally excused myself and pointed out that there were several tables that were getting their food and that we had, at that point been in the restaurant for 47 minutes at least (I know this because I checked us in on FB the moment we were seated) The server asked us "who is your server?" I said, I don't know, you seated us and poured our coffee and someone else took our order. She went to check, then a few minutes later she came back and said, " your order has definitely been placed and should only be a few minutes, is that ok?" I was fairly annoyed and again pointed out that its not OK, Meanwhile up at the pass, the server who took our order, shanghai'd someone elses order to give to us. This is just and assumption on my part but while the dished that were delivered were technically what we ordered, they were not as we ordered them, I ordered the Confit Hash, poached soft, I got Medium-hard poached, the fiance ordered the Mexican Eggs over medium and the eggs were soft poached. The dished were presented without so much as a sorry for the wait. Another server came by to freshen up our coffee and asked how everything was, I said it's fine but I'd like to speak to the manager. It turns out, this server is the owner. I expressed our concerns, and he was very sympathetic and explained that they were only newly opened and were still working out the kinks etc. He was very good and didn't brush off the comments and was receptive to the feedback we gave him. the real savior of the experience was the food, the mexican eggs were freaking awesome, the refried beans and the fresh pico, and avocado had so much flavour. the Confit hash was a great dish for breakfast and in terms of breakfasts that we have had in victoria, is close if not THE BEST I have had. Once they get the crew running like a machine this place will and should be lined up around the corner. Get there! read more

the food is a little high priced for what you get but descent but i have to say they are taking your phone number and name for contact tracing so that the government can track you down ,but they only take one name even if there is more of you so i dont know why that makes sense.if i wasnt with a group and someone didnt give them that freely i would have said no.he said that is what they do.i am not a fan of supporting the plandemic.there was one staff member that put on a mask and five mintutes later she had it off then on again and off again the time we were there.ok then that makes no sense but i guess it makes as much sense as the covid itself NO SENSE which equals nonsense.i wouldnt eat there again myself.but if you have no problem with having the government hassling you for a the PLANdemic go for it read more

Full bar, retro ambience, and an inventive menu are definitely positives. I've been here twice-- once for breakfast, once for dinner-- and I think the food quality is uneven. Maybe this what I should expect of breakfast sausage here, but mine was kind of mealy. It was not undercooked but I'm wondering if a few more minutes on the griddle would have helped. My wife's granola was made with steel cut oats which sounds great but they were very chewy. I liked a mouthful of it but a whole bowl would definitely have worn my jaws out. At dinner I hoovered up my excellent vegetables (sautéed kale, celery parmesan slaw, green beans) and most of my half chicken but the wing drumette was raw inside and the waitress tried to convince me that it really was cooked, it was just the brining process that made it look that way! Someone please tell me if this is true... I was unimpressed with that explanation. My wife's chicken Caesar salad had big chunks of romaine that were too large to fit in your mouth without cutting up and the chicken was just a couple of big wads that she also had to cut up. Again, if this is just local custom or the restaurant's idiosyncratic approach, well, okay but it felt more like careless food prep to me. read more

We booked a room for the weekend at Hotel Zed, which online looked pretty cool. Upon arrival we were a bit, well disapointed. But then we realized that it was not as bad and offered some nice perks. But the BEST thing was the restaurant! I read a few reviews and we decided to go and we are probably going to eat there the entire weekend. What a feast of great food, so far diner was amaxing, breakfast was fabulous. Not to mention the lovely staff, these guys are very friendly and personable. We will not forget The Ruby! I was staying at Hotel Zed last weekend, so it made perfect sense to try The Ruby for breakfast/brunch! I was very pleasantly surprised by their breakfast tacos (recommended by our server) which were very tasty. We had such an enjoyable breakfast that we returned the same day for dinner where I enjoyed their warm chicken dip sandwich very much. I wanted to give it a 5/5 but I didn't enjoy the breakfast potatoes or the french fries that came with my dinner so... 4/5 for you! read more

We were looking for a funky place to have breakfast in Victoria and Ruby's could not have been better. Great selection of eggs benny dishes. The maple banana pecan oatmeal and the duck confit benny with truffle hollandaise were excellent. Service was great. Overall a fun way to spend the morning. Good food with a focus on rotisserie chicken which can be a little dry at times. The music is good played off a small vinyl collection. Be prepared to wait in line of your going for breakfast. The plus side is that they have a comfortable waiting area and a supply of coffee for those in the queue. read more
