We were told we had to place our entire order at once, and despite our reservation noting that we were celebrating a birthday, he never acknowledged it or even asked if we were celebrating a special occasion. When we mentioned it ourselves, he didn't respond at all. While returning from the restroom (which was also uncomfortably hot and stuffy), I spoke with the manager, Jason, about our experience and asked if we could switch servers. Thankfully, Vlad, who had been serving nearby tables, took over our table. He was a complete turnaround. Vlad was personable, energetic, attentive, and provided the level of hospitality we expected. He truly saved what he could of the experience. Our group spent over $750 on food and drinks. The appetizers and sides were excellent and easily the highlight of the meal. Unfortunately, the entrees didn't live up to the same standard. One steak was overcooked and had to be sent back. By the time the replacement arrived, everyone else had already finished eating. The Salmon Diane was also dry and overcooked. To end the night, while we were waiting for our checks to be processed, Jason came over and told us the next reservation had arrived and that we needed to leave. We explained that we were simply waiting to pay, yet no effort was made to speed up the process by collecting our payment or offering to run the checks. It felt rushed and incredibly inhospitable, especially after everything that had already gone wrong. The only reasons this review isn't one star are Vlad and the excellent appetizers and sides. We've dined at many high-end restaurants, and this was by far one of the most disappointing service experiences we've had, especially for a special celebration. Unfortunately, we won't be returning.

You can watch the show sitting or standing. It's up to you. But the energy in the building will most likely have you on your feet singing and dancing. There's an outdoor area in the back that serves barbecue if you get hungry as well. The bartenders are friendly and they serve drinks relatively quickly. Great spot overall!

They also keep you upto date with other jazz happenings around the area. They have brought performances by artists like Keiko Matsui, Joyce Spencer, The Rob Holbert Group, Andrea Dawson, and Marvin Sapp. They typically put on their series in local event centers and performance halls, and even restaurants around town...depending on the draw of the artist. My only regret is that being a series, they are not continuous in their performances. In fact, they do a series only every couple of years.

If you come with one other person and only take two seats at a shared table, someone else can end up sitting directly across from you. I understand it's a live music venue, but when you're trying to eat and carry on a conversation, sitting face-to-face with strangers can feel uncomfortable. I've been coming to The Free Man for years, and I always order the Cajun wings. They've always come tossed in the Cajun sauce. Last night, they came out dry with the sauce served on the side. I asked about it, and I was told, "That's how they do it now." Since when? It honestly felt like my order was made incorrectly and they just put the sauce on the side to fix it. If that really is a new policy, why is the kitchen deciding that for customers? At the very least, ask whether we want the sauce on the side or tossed. I also noticed the wings seemed overcooked--the meat near the bone had a very dark brown color that I wasn't a fan of. The Cajun fries were still excellent, as always. I also ordered the red beans and rice. They were okay. Someone definitely got a little heavy-handed with the hot sauce. The rice was cooked well, but overall it was just average. For drinks, I ordered a ginger beer. Mine came in the can, while the person I was with received theirs poured over a cup full of ice, which watered it down. I would rather have the can and decide how much ice I want. I've also been hearing from other reviews that a 20% gratuity is automatically added. I didn't notice that on my bill, which makes me wonder if it was already included because the suggested tip amounts seemed unusually low. If gratuity is included, just be transparent about it. Don't make customers feel like they should leave an additional tip because they weren't clearly informed. Now for the best part: the band was fantastic. They're the reason I continue coming back. The Free Man has always been one of my favorite places for live music, but it feels like some of the little details have started slipping. People come here for great food, great music, and a relaxed atmosphere with like-minded people. Don't make the experience more complicated than it needs to be.
