The food doesn't disappoint and neither do the portion sizes. Always over order and end up taking food bags home! Recent meal for 20 of us cost £140 - bargain. Everyone was full and took some food home. Atmosphere depends on the day and if there is some sport on. Can get rowdy if cricket or football matches on but other than that no issues. I do believe the toilets could do with a clean as they are not the cleanest. I also found the floors to be on the sticky side as well which I didn't like. I guess those are the negatives of the pub. But on the positives, the staff are excellent with customers and regulars. You will be served in no time and you will not be waiting long for your drink. There is also a friendly and lively atmosphere about this place and you can have conversation with the regulars. Will I come to The Cross Guns again? I'm not sure. I might have a quick pint here if I am on the way to The Hawthorns or I'm in Handsworth. So perhaps I may just return.

I'm gonna go right ahead and write this review as I didn't traipse around Handsworth all day in the…read morerain and then sit in this pub soaked for two hours to come home and get my spot nicked. The Black Eagle is the kind of pub where there is always a regular perched at the bar and ready to chip in to your conversation. This happened when I entered the other day and I didn't mind at all, he was quite friendly and it made a change. The front bar is pretty small and everyone turned as we walked in, dripping from the rain. I half expected them to be a bit moody but then a guy sitting at the bar pointed us towards the ale menu and was quite eager to recommend drinks for us. We ordered a couple of pints from the very polite bar man then sat by the fire for a while, perusing the menu. We didn't eat on this occasion but the food looked good and I wouldn't mind popping back there on a sunny day for some fish and chips. Lots of people came in for dinner while we were sitting there. The portions looked big. I'll upload a photo of the menu so you can see what's on offer. The pub was traditionally decorated but quite homely and we were reluctant to leave. I know we'll be back there soon though, to take advantage of that beautiful garden or the open fire if it's cold.

There is parking at the pub but if there are no spaces available, you will probably need to park on the side streets. There is a side street quite literally next to the pub. Even if you come here via the bus, there is a bus stop right outside the pub. The Gateway to India pub is easy to find and you cannot miss it. The atmosphere generated by the regulars and those who come here is very good. This pub does get jam packed whenever live sports are shown. I haven't tasted the food here but I will next time I come here. My friends do rate this pub highly although I have to admit the toilets could do with a clean and be improved. But apart from that, I can't fault this pub in any way and hopefully I will be back here soon.

Manager of the restaurant (could be owner also) was a polite and energetic person who showed utmost care to the customer with a friendly smile all the time. So, all the staff were fantastic. Secondly, the ambience was also very good, it was not outdated but more matched to the type of food served. So, we loved it. All the prices in the menu was striked off and it threw us a bit out of balance as they mentioned that the new prices are getting outdated. This could be because, they may be taking over the restaurant from someone else and probably not ready with new prices for the dishes. But we would prefer to know exactly how much we are spending for a dish that we want to eat transparently. Lets come to the food part. Some of the things that we experienced. When we sat down and starters were about to be served, my daughter was given a plate which was not washed properly and had food stains. When we pointed it out , they took care of it immediately. The waiting time for the starters itself was a bit too high, we felt, as we waited more than 35 minutes for the starters to arrive. Quality of the starters in respect to the taste of the food, was average at best. Portions were not big, but we are ok with that, however the taste was not up to the mark. Main course - Naan bread were fresh as was very well done. Both veg and non veg main courses were bit bland and lacked proper seasoning. Again, we waited a long time between starters and main course. As we are big time foodies, and we like to try out new restaurants and we have reasonably a good pallet and so along with service ambience and everything, taste of food is very very important for us and i think thats where Purnima needs to put a bit more effort and make delicious dishes. Sorry, could not justify myself to go more than 2 stars.
