The George IV attracts a great crowd, from 20s to 40s, all usually well-dressed and -behaved. The drinks are nice and they have more wine than a typical pub. But the best thing about this pub is the live music, which happens every Fri and Sat, and many Thursdays. But it's not just live cover bands, it's the best indie, alt and upcoming bands the area can find. The first night (of many) we went here, we heard an amazing blues/funk band that rocked our socks off. There's not really a place to dance, though people do try their best, especially one regular known for his colourful, flamboyant shirts (and dance moves). The beer garden is spacious, with lots of tables and benches, and a nice, relaxed vibe with pretty flowers climbing up white washed stone. The crowd is super friendly, and easy-going, and it's a great way to spend a low-key, music-filled Friday night.

The rooms are nice, with comfy sofas and tables to sit at if you're dining. Children are welcome and there is free wi-fi available, which is great if you have a smart phone and you want to check your emails. The staff are friendly and if you're dining, will serve everything (including drinks) at the table, rather than having to order or pay at the bar, like you would do at most pubs. Apparently they also put a film on in the back room (I think it's on a Sunday afternoon), which I think is a good idea. A pleasant place to stop for a pint and platter in the centre of Lichfield.

The week day lunch time visits were fine, nice food although we thought it was a bit overpriced for what it was. On all three lunch time visits, the manager was in attendance as well and we've always found him to be very pleasant and helped to make us feel welcome. Oh dear, then came the Friday evening visit. We peeked through the window from outside and there was just one table in use. (My husband thinks actually that there are too many tablets scrunched into one room and it is a pub that's desperately trying to be a restaurant). Anyway, it looked empty except for a table of two in use, so we went in. It was quite early, between six and six thirty. Well, we were not made to feel welcome at all. Two girls in their late teens were on duty (no manager this time to make us feel welcome). They were asking whether we'd booked (we hadn't, we had just popped in on the off chance as we live in a local village and were driving by and as it looked empty, we thought we'd pop in). Anyway, after lots of 'ums and arrs', one of the girls seemed to be making an effort to try and fit us into this empty pub/eatery and the other girl seemed quite adamant that there 'was no room at the inn', they decided we could have a table. The one who didn't really want us in there (or that's how it felt anyway) reluctantly trotted off to the table with us following behind, slapped the menus onto the table rather abruptly and walked off. My husband and I, well, we were in two minds whether to just leave at that point we sat looking through the overpriced menu, feeling really unwelcome and wondering whether we should really be giving our hard earned money to such an establishment. The less friendly waitress came and took our order. I asked if there was any chance that my meat could be medium well done as I can't deal with pink meat. I was made to feel stupid, with lots of 'obviouslys' thrown in there for good measure (and reading between the lines, the answer was obviously 'no, I couldn't'. I replied that 'obviously it might be better if I had a pie instead then'. She took our order and rushed off, all very abrupt and unfriendly. Still unsure whether we should stay there, we looked around and noted that, yes, the place was still empty, apart from one table for two. Surely when you are eating, it's not just about the quality of the food but also the welcoming atmosphere? Even Wetherspoons staff are better trained! Anyway, the food came and I have to say, it was delicious. In fact, the food at the Horse and Jockey is always delicious. Well, we stayed for 45 minutes. (We thought that by having a dessert we might be overstaying our welcome). Oh, at this point, by the way, another table was occupied by about four people. If only the manager had been in, perhaps 'Miss Bad Attitude and False Eyelashes' might have been more pleasant. Anyway, we left after one course and the place was still nearly empty. We won't be going back, of course.

Not too pretentious and lacking a lot of the frills that can come with this kind of quality meal but thats why I like it. Definitely book ahead but well worth a visit. The only downside is that its difficult to decide what to order with such a good selection.

It's very appealing if you dig this traditional style. The barman on my visit was friendly enough, the beer I chose (Ludlow's The Boiling Well) was fresh and tasty. Nothing truly special about The Angel Inn, but it's certainly a fine place to hang out for a couple of pints if you want to avoid more modern brew pubs like the nearby Brewhouse & Kitchen.

The first thing you see when you enter this alehouse are the copper kettles they use for brewing - they also do tours and seminars on brewing. A fairly broad range of on-site brews are available on tap, plus several guest ales and the usual array of fizzy lagers. I tired several ales, and found them to be of variable quality. The pub covers two floors and several designated areas, so you can find a moderately quiet spot even if it's busy - which it frequently is. There's also a smoking area to the back on the ground floor. Superior pub grub is available throughout the day, plus several "small plate" options for lunchtime. Of these I chose the small cod & chips and the 3-egg cheese omelette - both were tasty and well-prepared, at UKP 5 each. The food was served fairly quickly, despite the fact that a party of "suits" were already marauding the premises at the time. The décor I found appealing, and the staff friendly and nimble on their feet. Warmly recommended for Lichfield!
