What a great place! Everyone talks about how great the food is, but it holds its own as a pub, venue, and meeting space. The atmosphere is fantastic, really fun decor and welcoming vibe. The Dark Horse has an upstairs event/meeting space that is really large with its own bar and a stage, which they make available for local community groups and the like. A choir I'm in meets here :) Very friendly and helpful staff, tons of seats, tons of space, good food, good drink: an overall great venue. Will be back to try these ribs everyone keeps raving about!

I need to avoid making poor puns about Dark Horses in this review. But I'm going to struggle to resist. I'll just make that clear. I've known this venue as The Cross before and knew only that it had a new name and new owners however I don't remember ever going to it as the Cross. I arrived first and was pleased to discover our table benches and table had been reserved close to the main entrance. If you don't know the area it's pretty useless for me to tell you its "Quite Moseley" but it's a suburb that behaves like a cool independent town for the most part. The others were having ribs and I knew that I would be looking at the menu. There was a lot of American influenced items but I settled for a Peaky Blinder Pizza! Which was hot and firey We also tried Picklebacks which is a shot experience that you just have to taste to believe. Out server was friendly and accommodating and I'd go back here for lunch or even a sunday dinner! FIVE STARS!!

Devoured this double classic burger. Feel so incredibly stuffed.

I visited The Dark Horse on a wet Monday night out with my fellow Yelp Deputies to have a much needed sit down together, chat and enjoy each other's company. I had visited The Dark Horse when it was MoDough and had a great time sampling their tasty pizzas, which you'll be pleased to know are still on the menu and are still made in an authentic wood burning oven. When I arrived I was also pleased to see they still did their own beers, Mo Fo, Mo Pale and Mo Dark, as well as a great selection beers from local brewery, Purity. I went for the Mo Dark, which is their own stout. It's great. I asked who made it, though they were keeping tight lipped on which well-known brewery they had on board. It was rib night, so whilst most of the party went for the ribs, I went for the double classic burger. The menu did say you had to be really hungry for this, and it wasn't kidding. IT WAS HUGE. I had to take one of the patties off and eat it separately from the burger. It was very tasty, the patties were juicy and pink and the skin on fries they came with were delicious. Whilst eating they had a great duo playing and singing country-esque songs, which really added to the rib night, America soul feeling. We also got to try their "Pickleback" shot. Very interesting! Certainly worth a try. Buffalo Trace whiskey and pickle juice. Kid you not. Service was incredible. Cannot fault them one bit. This is a definite place to visit if your in Moseley! Especially in the summer, they have a nice outdoor seating area which I'm sure you can catch a few rays in.

I'm here tonight cos me fiancé is DJing. Got here early so I could stuff my face. Ordered the piggy platter...Jesus Christ it could have fed four lol As yummy as it was , way too much meat for me! Really tender meat, very delicious! I'll let the photos do the talking, I'm far too full!

Mmmmm.... ribs. Those that know me know I REALLY love ribs. You just can't beat slow-cooked, fall-off-the-bone, juicy slabs of pig. But good ribs take time, effort and know-how. And the guys at the Dark Horse know what they are doing. Probably helped by the fact that the owner, Keith, is a huge fan of American BBQ and travelled the states sampling and learning from the best of the best. For those that don't know The Dark Horse used to be Mo Dough, a pizza joint originally intended as a pop-up but ended up being well loved by many in Moseley and beyond. But from the proverbial ashes of the pizza oven rises a majestic phoenix-like horse (quite a dark one you might say) and this beast has stampeded all over the clean, minimal interior that Mo Dough has and created a funky new interior that is suitably dark yet not too much of a black hole you'd need a torch to eat your food. Speaking of food, The Horse is truly a thoroughbred purveyor of excellent BBQ you'd be hard pushed to find elsewhere in Brum. If you can get down there on a Monday for their rib night you can enjoy a whole rack of ribs with sides, a pint and a pickleback (a delicious double shot drink of pickle juice and bourbon - no, honestly, it's amazing) for only £15 and these are lip-smacking, sauce-drenched, gorgeous ribs. They also offer a beef short rib which is possibly finer than their traditional pig, both are an absolute must. I'm yet to try the rest of their food but it won't be long til I'm back!

From The Cross, to Mo Dough to this. A Dark Horse, indeed...

What goes on? This place was The Cross. After a hurried and admirable quick refurb it then became the 'pop-up' pizza place Mo' Dough. Though the pizza was tasty and the craft beers good, this place was much criticized. The decor of whitewashed pallets and a slapdash sign didn't help to draw the punters in. Neither did the prices. The food was excellent tasting though, with some maverick pizzas including the 'Snow White'. An apparently well-paid house-band was installed which was a brave and salutabley original concept, until the entertainment that they provided in the form of cover songs was often late, often out-of-tune and often drunk. Then the music venue attached to the business, (which was previously called The Loft) changed name to Night Owl. If you took a look at facebook around this time, most people didn't know what was happening at the place. Is it a pizza place? Was it open yet? (They chose to shut in the day, so people traveling past on their way to and from from work were right to think this.) Was live music still going on there? Tom Hingley from Inspiral Carpets came to play. The gig was run on a free entry basis. What should have been a packed venue was Hingley playing to a couple of people. And now? The ugly caterpillar had blossomed into a butterfly. Soft lighting, and eclectic wooden furnishings make for a nice place for a Saturday afternoon beer and newspapers session. You'll be glad to know that they've kept the Mo' range of beers, (their version of a US Style IPA is tasty and good value) and the craft beers. A full programme of live music, DJ nights, dance classes and comedy runs throughout the month. They'd do good to get their finger out in terms of letting people know though.

Just a quick update on this one... After a fantastic meal at Christmas, we NEEDED to go back and try the beef short rib. A great opportunity presented itself in the form of a well needed "Yelp Deputy meeting", so I booked a table and we rocked on down for rib nights. As we had, had the pork ribs last time I was tempted into trying the beef short ribs. These aren't supposed to be included on the deal, but with a bit of wheeler dealing (I'm not beyond the occasional beg), we manage the wangle this. £15 for a rack of ribs, a mountain of fries, a big portion of BBQ beans, a pint and a pickleback. Can't say fairer than that! The Pork ribs are DELICIOUS too! The food was magnificent. Being accompanied by live music (a regular thing on Monday nights) made the whole evening even better still. The bill for dinner for 6 of us including an additional round of drinks using the IB card discount came to £84. Amazing food, fantastic service and a great atmosphere! We'll be back again very soon, for sure!

This is probably my favourite pub in Moseley, which is high praise for a place known for its brilliant collections of bars and pubs. The biggest thing I look for in a pub is its drink, or more specifically it's beer, and the pub has a great selection. They have different beers on draught, about ten all in all, with a couple seeming to be regulars such as the titanic stout (a great alternative to Guinness if that's not your thing). When I've been there they were varied from saisons to big IPA's (a limited bourbon aged IPA from purity). This along with a wide range of bottled beers from all over the world gives the place a well earned reputation of serving fantastic beer. This would be great all by itself but the fact that it boats excellent food as well is what tops it off. It's primarily meat based, American influenced food but done and presented really well and you can tell they pride themselves on this aspect as much as the drink, the Sunday dinners are especially tasty. I haven't been to any of the events but they are constantly hosting interesting live acts from music to comedy etc. It's worth mentioning that the staff are also friendly, talkative and the service was quick. So all in all a really a great pub with a high standard in all areas.

Brie and bacon burger

Brilliant food freshly prepared as you can see whilst dining. Everything tastes amazing- credits to the chef. Service is quick, efficient and friendly. A great pub in the centre of Moseley. Only criticism is that toilets need a bit of attention. Definitely recommend if your nearby. Solid.

Overall it had a nice chilled out vibe, unlike some of the city centre sport bars which can get a bit overwhelming at times. On a Sunday they have a free music event upstairs which plays everything from Jazz and soul to rock and country music. Personally I wish it was on every night as it really does provide the perfect soundtrack to such a characteristic classic venue.

It's a genuinely friendly place with great beer that is a PROPER PUB. Some might call it an 'Old Man's Pub', which is completely fair, but that's what is so great about it. It's a particularly great place to watch sport, and football and cricket in particular. The locals are a knowledgeable crowd when it comes to both games and there is always a lively and friendly discussion to be had. They have recently started doing a different range of foods. You can get a pretty decent roast on a Sunday for around £4 and there is often a curry night that is well worth a visit. The curry is cooked by the landlord's wife and is excellent home cooked Indian food. The only word of caution I would offer about this place is to be careful when leaving late at night. It's not in the best or safest part of town and there have been a few nasty incidents in the park behind the place. These are pretty rare, in fairness, but I would recommend taking a cab home, or else going in sufficient numbers and with your wits about you, if travelling on foot.

The decor is decidedly from the old school of pub decorating, dark but comfortable, decorated with brass and postcards from the regulars behind the bar. Though the television was on (always a bet hate of mine in pubs) there are several areas in which to sit and drink, so you can get away from the television. There's also a pool table and a fruit machine for those who like those kinds of things. Prices are fairly cheap and the atmosphere is relaxed. The false ceiling is low and holds in the monotone coverage of the Sky Sports from the mounted plasma screen. A heavily chipped wall shows the quality of darts played here in yesteryear, whilst locals compete at pool from the other end. It's not the place I would feel comfortable about my girlfriend coming without me. And that has nothing to do with the pub, its dubious location in Highgate, or its subsequent locals. I just don't want her getting better than me at pool. But, occasionally, it makes no difference whether the dining room looks like a prison communal or a Venetian palace. Sometimes the food is so good that word-of-mouth takes over and you find yourself in the vast corners of society to get a fill, like in Highgate, where even the stray dogs walk around in pairs. And here, on a damp Tuesday evening, the dining room is packed with those in the know, willing to make the pilgrimage. The short menu has a few curries, from which we tried two: A butter chicken was an artery thickening joy, which made me wonder why anyone looking towards the milder side would choose a tikki masala over this, and a chicken kahari, a pungent thing of beauty, punctured with plenty of fresh green chillies. Both were keenly spiced, offering levels of flavouring above your standard curry fare. The accompanying peshwari naans were supple and avoided cloying sweetness. It's not the curries that are the main attraction here, as testified by 90% of the dining/pool room. They come here for the meat; marinated, impaled, and plunged into a seriously hot tandoor. The result is a charred meat, full of meaty flavour and as tender as a newly singleton. All of it; the tikka chicken breast and wings, the shish kebab, the lamb chops, are simply impeccable. Eight pound for the small mixed grill is enough to feed three. Eleven quid will get you the large portion sufficient for a table to feast on. Little wonder they are always full. It's hard to take in that the best tandoor cooking I have tried is a few miles from my door, and harder to accept that I have taken so long to find it. I don't care that my beer choice is limited to the piss poor Carlsberg or Stella, or that the food is served on kitchen tissue. For once I don't care for which farm my chicken comes from, or what grass my lamb is eating. The food here makes everything irrelevant when it arrives at the table. Others have been eating here for a while knowing this. I cant wait to join them again.

It's pretty hard to miss, with it's name festooned on the exterior and with it's location being a gateway to the area. It's large looking from the outside, but you might be mistaken for thinking it was a bit of an "old man pub" venue... Oooooh... how wrong you would be. When you first enter the pub, you end up in a traditional pub area (with little stools, wooden tables and lots of people nursing pints of ale). The ale selection is plentiful and the staff are more than happy to give you a recommendation and a taster (if you aren't sure). So far, traditional pub, right? Well... let us continue. The pub bar opens into a hallway with several different directional choices. We WERE headed for the indoor cocktail bar, but this had been reserved for a Christmas gathering (so unfortunately, I cannot give you any idea of what this is like). If you head straight down the corridor, that's where the magic happens... So, the garden immediately hit me as a) Massive and B) Rammed. On our left was a cigar vendor and a smaller (heated and covered) seated area with comfy armchairs and lots of people enjoying a cigar. Just to the left is the "Wine bar", a wooden shack with everything from a very fine red, Champagne to mulled wine offerings. Further on from that is the huge decking area. Lots of warm heaters, tables, chairs and a "Beer festival" feeling, even though there were hundreds of people out there (no joke), there were still seats to be had. Attached to the decking area was a hot dog bar (I know, A HOT DOG BAR!) and a TIki cocktail bar. This HAD to be our destination. We opted to go for Zombies (£7 each - about average for a cocktail bar in Birmingham) and were suitably impressed when the server had finished pouring, tore open a packet of Angel Delight (with gusto), sprinkled over the cocktails and set them alight to a mighty "POOF"! With drinks firmly in hand, we went to find somewhere reasonably quiet we could have a chat and a contemplate on the venue's we had been that evening. This was when we found my favorite spot in the whole pub. The sanded, covered beach area. Who would have thought there would be a beach in Moseley? With Bamboo walls, lit up tiki masks adorning the interior and plenty of chairs and tables, it nailed it's place as my favorite pub of the night. This is the kind of venue you will go for 1 and end up having at least 3.
