I've been here before for food and really enjoyed the food (I can recommend the burgers) but had a bit of a mixed experience this time around. I came with a group of six others for an improptu leaving meal. Although I wasn't drinking, I tried my friends lycee g&t and it was really delicious, and they have a really interesting cocktail menu. However, another friend got the house wine and wasn't impressed. If you order separately, the food comes out at different times. Although we wouldn't usually mind this, there were quite long gaps between when each of our meals arrived despite all order consecutively after one another. I had the veggie kedegree, which was ok but nothing special (but that might be because I found it a bit spicey). Some found the tapas a bit underwhelming. The staff were mixed, some were quite nice but some were a bit short with us. Overall I might go back but it wouldn't be my first option!

Arco is tucked into…read morea snug space on Harborne's high street that suggests a quirky coffee shop first and foremost. As a regular of some of the other local area loungers, I finally made my way down to Harborne for Arco's weekly Sunday quiz night with fellow Yelper Jeanette M. and friends. Arco is decorated in the typical lounger way with a colourful palette and interesting paintings covering all wall surfaces. Aside from an absurdly long hallway upstairs that connects to the toilets, this lounger has the smallest square footage in the chain I've seen yet. In this case it's an asset, as it makes the space cosier and more inviting as a coffee shop and snack bar. For whatever reason, this visit also marked the first time I've entered into a lounger quiz. The pay in is only £1, and unlike some other area quizzes, good old fashioned pen and paper is all you need. Our team had to make it through seven categories of ten questions each plus a picture fill in the name of the person section. The questions were at points esoteric, likely owning to the large number of grad students and academicians that frequent the area. You might want to brush up a bit before entering this quiz! I wasn't too hungry on this visit, but still decided to sample their offerings. The loungers have an extensive menu for vegetarians and vegans. I decided on the falafel tapa, which for £3.75 gives you three falafel balls, a smidgen of hummus, and bread. While not the most traditional falafel you'll find, the taste was outstanding and flavourful, and the tiny amount of hummus was good with the bread. To drink, I went with my lounger go-to, a Stowford Press cider. I can happily report that the cider tasted exactly as it was supposed to, so it's clear that this lounger takes keg line hygiene and maintenance seriously. It's not often that I find myself in Harborne, but next time I'm around Arco Lounge will get serious consideration as a place for a quick bite to eat or caffeine fill-up.

(Unfortunately, it was not, but I'm not disappointed by that at all.) Curiously, I entered the doors to be greeted by tables decorated with orchid flowers, helping to make the pub feel very homely. The vibe of the pub was rather unique to say the least, and almost felt like I was stepping back in time. Grainy television screens surround the walls, and broadcast 80s/90s music videos straight from the MTV Classics channel. I loved the whole experience, and felt like I'd entered some sort of time capsule from the synth pop era; It was strange, yet very welcoming. Additionally, the TV advertisements between music videos were all in Italian dialogue, so I'm guessing that the pub broadcasts its channels from Italy. Obscurely, I think this really adds to the unique atmosphere at Samba. (Although hearing acne cream adverts in Italian would certainly be very confusing while sozzled!) The stage area of the pub was sectioned off, and had planks of wood lying across it, which is a shame because by looking at the size and amount of speakers, sound systems and lights, it seems as though a night here would be quite prolific; So I hope it is cleared up/improved soon! Prices of drinks here are phenomenally cheap; There was a football match on the day before, and according to the board, pints had been £2!! Crazy stuff!! I purchased two Sailor Jerrys from here for £4.80; I think this has to be the cheapest I've ever paid for my favourite rum. The staff at Samba are very friendly, and strike up conversations really easily. On purchasing the two Sailor Jerrys, the lad who served me asked if I'd tried this rum with lemonade. I actually hadn't, so I trusted his recommendation, which turned out to be great! The alcohol here is very diverse and unusual; I had a good look on all the shelves, which were full of drinks that I'd never heard of before. There was even a bottle of crystal head vodka, which comes in a plastic skull-shaped bottle; you very rarely see this anywhere! Unfortunately, there weren't many customers in the pub at the time of my visit (around 5pm) which is a real shame. But I'm going to check out Samba in the evenings to see how busy it is at this time. If this pub was situated in the city centre, I know for sure that It'd be a very popular destination!

Inside, it's a pretty stylish venue especially for the as Smethwick isn't exactly the most 'go-to' area This bar is ideal if you live in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way to go here. It was a quiet evening when we went and they had music playing from the TV's. There wasn't much of an atmosphere as there was a complete mix of people, both young and old, but the venue was OK and perfect if you're looking for a quiet place to go and enjoy a drink.

A voucher for this place reminded me that I hadn't been for around 4 years (I know, terrible right?) and I thought it was high time I should go back and give it another go. I actually really love the decor of this place. It's a basement restaurant and bar (hence the name), with the entrance being located on Newhall Hill. Once you enter and head down the stone steps you are presented with two doors; the entrance to the restaurant and the entrance to the bar. We proceeded to follow the labyrinth to the eatery and found the check in desk with relative ease. The staff were ON IT from the moment we walked in. Reservation confirmed, seated and presented with some water within a couple of minutes. We went on a fairly busy Saturday night, but everyone seemed to be looked after during our visit. There was no snobbishness that we had used a voucher and we were presented with the wine and food menu (which wasn't so large that it was a nightmare to decide, but there was plenty of choice) and left to ponder for a couple of minutes. We opted for a bottle of house white wine (on top of the glass that was included with the deal), which wasn't too overpriced at £16.95 and had a good think about what we were going to have. Our waiter had recommended the pigeon (something that I love, but don't have as often as I would like), so I went for this to start and the venison for main. The first course was bought out piping hot (obviously freshly cooked) and within about 10 minutes of our order. Although the portion wasn't massive, it was very tasty and all of the flavours in the dish complimented the complex flavours in the meat. The venison was the star of the show. This was tender and delicious. Now, not having a huge sweet tooth, I opted for a cheese board for dessert. This looked great (being presented on a slate) and offered 4 kinds of cheese, a range of crackers and a honey jelly (as well as the obligatory celery). We left £20 (with tip and the cost of the wine) and the voucher had cost £29 making the meal just under £50. The cost of a 3 course meal was £25, and 2 course was £22.50 when we visited - so I would say it's pretty reasonable. For a sumptuous dining experience in an underground basement, I would recommend a trip to the Vaults.

Luckily for us, Julian found this little jem - which is quite fitting as it's situated in the Jewellery Quarter - and restored it to its full glory keeping the original characteristics including the popular 'vaults' which have been turned into private booth areas. The venue itself is probably one of my favourites not only because of its detailed and stylish décor, but also the quality drinks and delicious food. Daryl the bar manager will ensure your cocktails are mixed to perfection and if you don't see any that you fancy, ask him as he's always busy making his own concoctions. Food wise, I highly recommend pretty much everything on the menu it's that good but my personal favourite has to be the salmon. They often have food deals such as 2 courses for £15 so it's worth checking their website before you book a table.
