    The breakies are spot on

A cracking breakie at a reasonable rate. I've been in Arco a few times and it's always been busy. I was early in so it gave me time to myself. In which time I looked around and it really does offer everything. From a casual meet up, family gathering, business meeting to one man and his lappy (me!) Good solid service, clean and overall a jewel in the crown on Harbornes ever changing high street.

I've been living in Harborne for 2.5 years and Arco is the restaurant I go to with my wife more than any other in the area, by a wide margin. While some menu items can be hit or miss, we have never been disappointed with the breakfast or tapas items. The only real issue is that service can be slow when there are a lot of customers. They also host a quiz night on Sundays which is a lot of fun and they give a prize to both the first and last place teams. I've been to a few pub quiz nights around Birmingham and this was one of the better ones I've experienced. I recommend Arco to anyone in the area

Great spot for brunch. It's a bit of a quirky place but the food is great and the coffee is good. I had the Diner Brunch which was a plate of BBQ beans, fried potato, 2 pancakes topped with bacon and a sausage patty. At £9.50 I thought it was a little on the expensive side but when it came there was a load of food, it was filling and delicious. The milkshakes are nice but in my opinion not really worth the £3.50.

Now, I can't comment on what Arco Lounge was like before it's refurb, but after attending a relaunch event last week - I can comment on what I found it to be like afterwards... Harborne is kicking at the moment. Between gelato, wings, great coffee, tea and cake; it's somewhere that offers everything you would need for a gastronomical adventure within a 10 minute walk. If you've been around Brum for a while (or were born here), you might have heard of the Harborne mile... 13 pubs which make up an epic pub crawl around the main stretch. Well, since this was first formulated; there may very well might be some additions to be made. Arco Lounge would be a very welcome addition to this historic drunken trail. Situated around the top end of the High Street (nearer Junction than the School Yard) and looks like you would expect it to, a Gastropub. Once you walk in, you can see why this little venue is a treat. Decorated with a slightly Moroccan feel, the very cool basic light fittings, comfy seating and warm glow that has been added to the internal decor makes for a welcoming and enticing space that you would easily lose a few hours in. On my first visit I tried a selection of tapas including Chorizo, pork and a vegetarian sweet potato dish. It was all piping hot, looked fantastic and very satisfying. To wash this down I had a couple of pints (unfortunately there wasn't ale on offer, but there was a decent selection of lagers) which were served well. My little taste of Arco has made me want to go back to try it again. I wouldn't pop here for a pint nessesarily (down to the lack of ale), but I would go with a group of friends for lunch or tapas. It's a lovely spot to sit, chill and catch up.

Serving drinks at relatively cheap prices in comparison to other places nearer to town, Indie Lounge is a perfect stop on a pub crawl or even as a quick refueling point if you were to be heading into town. Abiding by the student budget, this bar is extremely popular with students who attend University this side of the midlands, with a healthy buzz without being too overcrowded, Indie Lounge is definitely worth a visit by anyone who is in the Selly Oak area.

I personally love Indie Lounge, as the bouncers are extremely friendly, funny and easy to get along with as well as the staff members that work there which gives off a pleasing and an adequate welcoming to the bar. I find that the only down point to Indie Lounge is that they don't have a dance floor to match the great music they play, however, you will find customers (mainly girls) dancing regardless of this aspect. A further fact that I find negative, especially when consuming many drinks, is that the girls' toilets always lack toilet roll. So I would recommend before going to Selly Oak's Indie Lounge as a girl, bring a small pocket size pack of tissues. Other than these critiques, I would say that Indie Lounge is my second choice of bars along the Selly Oak student strip.

(Unfortunately, it was not, but I'm not disappointed by that at all.) Curiously, I entered the doors to be greeted by tables decorated with orchid flowers, helping to make the pub feel very homely. The vibe of the pub was rather unique to say the least, and almost felt like I was stepping back in time. Grainy television screens surround the walls, and broadcast 80s/90s music videos straight from the MTV Classics channel. I loved the whole experience, and felt like I'd entered some sort of time capsule from the synth pop era; It was strange, yet very welcoming. Additionally, the TV advertisements between music videos were all in Italian dialogue, so I'm guessing that the pub broadcasts its channels from Italy. Obscurely, I think this really adds to the unique atmosphere at Samba. (Although hearing acne cream adverts in Italian would certainly be very confusing while sozzled!) The stage area of the pub was sectioned off, and had planks of wood lying across it, which is a shame because by looking at the size and amount of speakers, sound systems and lights, it seems as though a night here would be quite prolific; So I hope it is cleared up/improved soon! Prices of drinks here are phenomenally cheap; There was a football match on the day before, and according to the board, pints had been £2!! Crazy stuff!! I purchased two Sailor Jerrys from here for £4.80; I think this has to be the cheapest I've ever paid for my favourite rum. The staff at Samba are very friendly, and strike up conversations really easily. On purchasing the two Sailor Jerrys, the lad who served me asked if I'd tried this rum with lemonade. I actually hadn't, so I trusted his recommendation, which turned out to be great! The alcohol here is very diverse and unusual; I had a good look on all the shelves, which were full of drinks that I'd never heard of before. There was even a bottle of crystal head vodka, which comes in a plastic skull-shaped bottle; you very rarely see this anywhere! Unfortunately, there weren't many customers in the pub at the time of my visit (around 5pm) which is a real shame. But I'm going to check out Samba in the evenings to see how busy it is at this time. If this pub was situated in the city centre, I know for sure that It'd be a very popular destination!

A voucher for this place reminded me that I hadn't been for around 4 years (I know, terrible right?) and I thought it was high time I should go back and give it another go. I actually really love the decor of this place. It's a basement restaurant and bar (hence the name), with the entrance being located on Newhall Hill. Once you enter and head down the stone steps you are presented with two doors; the entrance to the restaurant and the entrance to the bar. We proceeded to follow the labyrinth to the eatery and found the check in desk with relative ease. The staff were ON IT from the moment we walked in. Reservation confirmed, seated and presented with some water within a couple of minutes. We went on a fairly busy Saturday night, but everyone seemed to be looked after during our visit. There was no snobbishness that we had used a voucher and we were presented with the wine and food menu (which wasn't so large that it was a nightmare to decide, but there was plenty of choice) and left to ponder for a couple of minutes. We opted for a bottle of house white wine (on top of the glass that was included with the deal), which wasn't too overpriced at £16.95 and had a good think about what we were going to have. Our waiter had recommended the pigeon (something that I love, but don't have as often as I would like), so I went for this to start and the venison for main. The first course was bought out piping hot (obviously freshly cooked) and within about 10 minutes of our order. Although the portion wasn't massive, it was very tasty and all of the flavours in the dish complimented the complex flavours in the meat. The venison was the star of the show. This was tender and delicious. Now, not having a huge sweet tooth, I opted for a cheese board for dessert. This looked great (being presented on a slate) and offered 4 kinds of cheese, a range of crackers and a honey jelly (as well as the obligatory celery). We left £20 (with tip and the cost of the wine) and the voucher had cost £29 making the meal just under £50. The cost of a 3 course meal was £25, and 2 course was £22.50 when we visited - so I would say it's pretty reasonable. For a sumptuous dining experience in an underground basement, I would recommend a trip to the Vaults.

Luckily for us, Julian found this little jem - which is quite fitting as it's situated in the Jewellery Quarter - and restored it to its full glory keeping the original characteristics including the popular 'vaults' which have been turned into private booth areas. The venue itself is probably one of my favourites not only because of its detailed and stylish décor, but also the quality drinks and delicious food. Daryl the bar manager will ensure your cocktails are mixed to perfection and if you don't see any that you fancy, ask him as he's always busy making his own concoctions. Food wise, I highly recommend pretty much everything on the menu it's that good but my personal favourite has to be the salmon. They often have food deals such as 2 courses for £15 so it's worth checking their website before you book a table.
