We arrived after church with a group of 10. They found us a few tables pushed together and we all had a great time. I should have taken pictures but forgot. You know, I just didn't love it. I ordered fried conch as an appetizer and found it to be have a weird chunky texture. I've had it in the Bahamas and it didn't have this texture, so I was put off. I then had the shrimp and grits. Again, I get this dish plenty when in the Carolinas, and this version just wasn't very good. I mean, it was just alright. It's Mother's Day and we put in an order for pickup but due to a very tired and cranky toddler we weren't able to stay out long enough to actually pick it up. I reached out via messenger and to my surprise the owner offered to deliver it to our home himself. Not only that but within 20 minutes of saying he was on his way he was knocking on our door. We offered to pay/tip extra but he refused, saying only that he's been there before and was happy to help. Truly excellent customer service. We usually love this place and tell everyone so. Tonight was just unacceptable. My husband usually gets the chopped steak medium rare and its been too rare, so he ordered medium and it was Burnt. Plus we sat 3 times longer than usual. We pointed this out yo the waiter but nothing was done, nothing was offered. The salads and baked potato was good, at least. I thought would be easily resolved by the Manager of Root Cellar. WRONG!! He totally refused to do anything. Zero. Not even to Comp a meal or give me the number of his Superior. Unfortunately this place was a tale of two visits for me. The first time, I got the pimento cheese burger and it was phenomenal. Probably one of the best burgers I have ever had. Almost a religious experience. On the side, I got the Mac and cheese which was truly sad. Dry - no cheese sauce at all, and slightly burnt. However, the burger was so good I had to go back for another before I left town. This time, the burger was overcooked, dry, and the bun smashed. After the poor Mac and cheese experience, I opted for mashed potatoes, but they too were pretty bad. Bland potatoes and gravy that almost tasted like out of a packet. Best fried chicken we've had! We ordered it with the grits on the side thankfully as they were bland and would have taken away from the crisp chicken. We also ordered the buttermilk gravy on the side which was tasty. The side salad is a nice portion and good mix of greens and vegetables, ask for the onions to be on the side because the purple they use are very strong. The pork chop was moist but thin. Ask for the sides the gravy and rice and lima beans were good. The mashed potatoes sticky & the green beans were greasy. We would eat there again but know what to order this time. The server was a young man who was very knowledgeable about the menu but overzealous to get us out of the restaurant. We've been wanting to try Root Cellar for awhile and finally made it in. We started out with the deviled eggs which were pretty delicious. There were 6 on the plate (6 halves/3 whole eggs) and they were on the small side (probably a medium egg instead of the normal large/extra large egg you'd get at the grocery store), so I'd definitely recommend getting more than one plate if you've got a few people at your table. After finishing the deviled eggs, I waited probably about 15 minutes for my salad to arrive and wondered if the server had forgotten about us. We didn't see him at all during that time (or very much thoughout the entire night) and the restaurant wasn't busy either. Other tables didn't have that experience, so I really think it was just our server. My spinach salad finally arrived and it was delicious. Spinach was fresh and crisp and the dressing was fantastic. I had barely finished the salad when our meals arrived. My husband said his shrimp and grits were tasty and he really enjoyed the sweet potato casserole and the brussel sprouts (had swapped his salad for those). To me, the sweet potato casserole was your typical sugary-sweet sweet potatoes. You know what you're getting when you order them. I wish they did have pecans for a bit of crunch, but no toppings on these. I had the buttermilk chicken with the creamed corn and I swapped out my grits for the roasted root vegetables (that day's veggies were red skinned potatoes). The buttermilk chicken was well spiced, but a bit on the salty side when eaten on its own. The gravy was also a bit on the salty side, so when combined, there was just too much salt in it. That being said, I'd probably order it again. The creamed corn was good and roasted potatoes were great. Overall, we'd go back, but not a favorite. read more

We started with an appetizer that I knew from the get go was bad for us, Fried chicken livers. They were over cooked in the grease & salty. Then I asked for country gravy for them and the waitress said sorry but we only have white and brown gravy. I ordered a Hot Honey chicken sandwich with onion rings. The sandwich had no heat what so ever, and the onion rings were soggy with grease (it was dripping from them). My husband ate the oyster plate and they were even salty. This restaurant is being ran by the quality that is being produced from the back of the house (the head chief). That said; the front of the house needs work. If you can see your server chatting with other servers and having no knowledge of the food that they are serving you, then tread lightly and know that this place has an awesome Chief and meh service. My son and I decided to give this little local place a try. There is a specials board and a great menu to choose from. This is simple food done right. The creamed corn, the sweet tater casserole, the buttermilk chicken with fantastic white gravy, the hand cut French fries, the fried perfectly seasoned flounder was all fresh and home made. We were calling around for a parter of seven for dinner. First calls was told we would be seat together and no wait.( Friday night at 5 pm ) this was already starting out great. We walked in a were seated the menu was clear and had great information about what was in the dish and that it is locally grown. We were out with the kids and the server ( Tyler ) was nice to answer there questions and take time to really ask what they liked and wanted. We all tried something different. I had the salmon blackened and it was great. The others in the group had oysters , steak, burgers and all were with it. The salad was nice and they have a home made dressing with strawberries vinaigrette and bacon. ( sounds off ) but the best ever and my mother in-law ask if they sell it and the owner come out with some to take home. It was that good. The service was fast and friendly and the food was great. We had never been here before so we decided to meet out friends on a Monday night. My boyfriend and one of our friends got the fish and chips entree, it was supposed to come with a salad and the waitress we had was so rude about everything. Once my boyfriend and our friend saw everybody around us getting salads they asked if they could get their salads also, she told him that a lot of people didn't want salads and she didn't bring it to them normally unless they asked, that's why she didn't bring it and was upset that she had to go them. We had to constantly ask for our drinks to be refilled and she was frustrated every time we asked her. Once we got our food the burger I got was completely black and not very good. We were there for 2 hours and weren't pleased at all when everybody around us that was sat after us was leaving. read more

Terrible customer service. Placed an online order and it processed and charged. Never got a confirmation and they wouldn't answer the phone. Called the other store and they said they are open and should be fine. Got there, order was cancelled, because they had internet issues. No apologies, they didn't care.
