    One of my happy places!

I'm rating 4 for the awesome big wood floor! The food and drink selection is ok and the prices are decent. They have rental skates with 3 options: regular quad skates, speed quad skates and roller blades. On family day, adults with kids don't pay for entry. It's pretty clean and the bathrooms work. I love skating here. I only wish that they would tell indecently dressed customers to add some clothes when they attend in family day with children around. Wednesday nights are 18+ and that's when you can really groove.

Went on a Saturday and arrived shortly before opening time (2PM) and they let us all in. The pricing is very reasonable, the staff was great, and it had a feel of the 2000s like when we use to go as teens. The DJ was awesome and energetic and played a great variety of music and at one point did limbo and stopped open skate to allow for fast skating divided into 3 turns (kids, teens, adults). My group of friends had a great time and all said they want to go back.

Beginners are reminded to stay in the middle

Friends of mine have been telling us we need to try the Rollercade for months and I am SO glad we finally jumped in! Our first try was on adult night (Wednesday) and we were warned to get there early because there is typically a line. While the line did manifest around 7, by the time we showed up about 7:45 we were inside in a flash. Entrance/rentals are a breeze, $10 to get in and then $4 for skates. If you bring your own, skip the rental fee. You can also purchase a token for a locker to put your belongings in for $1. It seems many people opt to just leave their items underneath the seating around the rink and don't seem particularly concerned about theft which makes me think it's a trusted community vibe. Before we could even get inside we had made multiple conversations with the friendly regulars and security and could tell this place had a great culture! Upon throwing on our skates we were right in the rink and it was a BLAST! Even as a beginner, watching all the regulars dance and have such a good time made it the most fun. The music and lights add great atmosphere as well! Beginners should be warned that you will be asked to stick to the middle of the rink until you have your skate legs ready. During adult night some skaters can get pretty fast and intense, however it is apparent that everyone is watching out for each other and being respectful. Even as the rink got crowded toward the end of the night it wasn't an issue to have your own skating space and feel confident you wouldn't get caught in any collisions. A few notables: there is a snack stand which offers lite fair and no alcohol (trust me, this is a good thing when people get into the rink) and parking is tricky! Very slim lanes so plan ahead if you have a large car or parking makes you anxious. You are able to take private lessons with the staff if you want and we also got a tip that coming on a Thursday proves to be pretty dead, making it easier to practice if you aren't ready to throw yourself right in. Overall incredible and unique experience and I will be back for certain!

Adult skate night. First time here since derby days. Super fun. Slow skaters in the middle and fast skaters on the outside.

Toilet stall, four of four, no wheelchair access

Brought my kid here for an event and there are no wheelchair accessible toilet stalls. I don't particularly care if I can get on the floor so I didn't even ask about that, but if I'm going to have to hold it for hours or leave the building to go pee, we have a problem.

I must admit I'm a latecomer to the whole roller derby sport(It is a sport by the way). My point of reference has always been the Raquel Welch film, " Kansas City Bombers" of yesterday. The perception by it that the roller girl is eye candy first and athlete thereafter is how most of us (mainly men)have been informed. But entertainment changes with the mores of any given generation. So now the fingerless gloves, decorated helmets, kneepads, skates that spit fire, the catchy as hell names: "Meri-Death", "Violet Protest" "Sock er' Mom" take on a much bigger significance. Girl Power is in full bloom here. And these ladies kick a$$ then take names. Which makes it all the more powerful. When a derby girl falls to the floor, you feel its impact. A quick overview of what to expect: There is parking away from the sports complex. Which means you will be walking in the dark after the event. I suggest you pay the $5 fee to park closer. It's also cheaper to buy tickets online. In addition they host events to promote their games at various local breweries; a perfect opportunity to buy tickets on the cheap. Otherwise it's $13 bucks at the door, well worth the price. As for seating you can choose any spot on a bleacher. The only thing is that the two periods stretch and after awhile you will feel it on your bum. As an ACRG newbie I didn't quite know what to expect. I also wondered why some people weren't sitting up front. Big Mistake. At any given moment a derby girl might fly right into your lap, leaving me at the edge of my seat the whole time. Girls zip by you. Smashing. Crashing. Colliding. Elbowing. Punctuated by more physical contact. Make no bones about it these ladies are ready to risk certain injury to entertain but above all to win. If in reading this you do not know what the object of the game is don't worry neither do I. By the second half you will understand it better. And as you see derby girls dashing through lanes there is a "heart" peeking out, a sense of community. For example I saw a girl with her mom in a makeshift derby outfit. I could sense that she was fan-girling throughout the game. At half time they made her an honorary team member, handing her a specially created shirt. You can tell it made her night. When she becomes a derby girl I'm sure she'll remember that gesture. The Alamo City Roller Girls is campy, good fun. The elbows are delivered with a "Kapow!" And the crowd does a mini wave as a jammer parts a moshpit of skaters. If you're looking for an experience somewhere between a Joan Jett's concert and a Texas Death Match this will be for you. Just mind your nachos if you choose to sit up front.

You guys more than definitely deserved the win and I'm happy to say that I was there to see it happen. The crowd was revved, the music was loud and the game was great! For those of you not familiar with roller derby or have only watched on tv, I encourage you to make it a point to come to a LIVE game. Especially where the ACRG is concerned - they rock!
