If you want to discover why The Rocks is known for 'The Rocks' and the history behind this amazing unique heritage, this tour is for you. I have been to The Rocks many times and passed many historical buildings but had no clue of the history this place had to offer. It became a migration place of colonial life in 1788. Our tour guide gave us an indepth history of The Rocks and the surroundings such as Watch Tower for incoming ships; showed us where 'settlers' lived; where sailors stayed before they headed back off to sea; warehouse building - where the ship would sail next to the building and then unload the goods. You would notice a pulley wheel just above the doors, where they attached goods on the rope and then pull the goods into the warehouse for storage. Our tour guide was so thorough with the history that you could mentally visualise the people and their lifestyle back then. You will also be taken to a place where there is a monument established to remind people of the past. The monument is carved into sandstone, the carving up close is chiseled away giving it a 'pick' effect because that was how they got the rocks out by using picks. There are three sides to this monument with carvings of 'The Settlers', 'The Convict' and 'The Soldier'. We paid $68 for a family pass and the tour goes for an hour and a half, so wear comfortable walking shoes as you would walk up many original stairs and cobbled paths, they are not flat surfaced a bit 'wavy' and crooked, it was good for it's time I guess? And of course appropriate clothing for particular weather, such as hats and sunscreen for hot weather or wet gear for rainy weather. You will also get into those nooks and crannies and stumble upon the 'Nurses Walk' and hidden pubs with a wealth of history attached to them. However, there are FREE walking tours available... in a sense. The only catch to the 'free' tour is, you pay what you think the tour is worth at the end or what suits your budget. I prefer to pay what is recommended rather try to guess what I should pay - at least both parties are happy with the paid amount. read more
