Security blasting light in a gentleman's face who is on the street and peacefully preaching the word of God.

The other night, a gentleman was peacefully preaching the word of God through his speaker, which is a constitutionally protected right. He was off the property line of the ritz and on public property. These two security guards decided to go on a power trip and physically assault him and blast a very bright light right in his face, simply because they felt he was "too close" and must do his activity on the other side of the street. Very unprofessional and not classy at all. I hope the owner sees this and take proper action. Seems like they already have a solid track record of being aggressive and unprofessional. I wouldn't come here..

Security is harassing a civilian that is exercising his 5th amendment right.

Terrible Experience. I've never seen a security guard rough up a civilian so bad. There was no reason to do all the things he did when the kid was obviously not being disruptive or a threat. I'm not sure how you guys train your staff but I'll definitely never come back here again.

The Ritz is the closest music venue to me, and thankfully they've featured some great bands lately. They book a good variety of genres, so there's something for everyone. This Saturday I'm seeing longtime favorite Shonen Knife, an all-girl band from Japan. The sound quality varies...sometimes it's great, other times it's too loud and strangely balanced. They have earplugs for sale at the box office. Things to note: free water pitcher at the bar, street parking, bad interior layout. The bathrooms are near the stage, making it hard to access if there's a crowd. Merch usually sold in the front room. The exit always gets congested: it's best to exit on the right by the bar or you'll get stuck in merch line traffic. They only sell tickets online or day of, no advance ticket sales at the box office.

A little before that incident happened, the last good moment I had from the show lol.

I went to The Ritz for the first time last year on July 27, 2024 when Macross 82-99 + Vantage + Engelwood came to play. The night started off nicely - the energy was great and had wholesome interactions on the dance floor. The venue was pretty intimate, so you can get a pretty good view of the stage no matter where you are. The music was super fun, too. My friend and I ended up getting one drink each, which were pretty good. We had a brief but good experience with one of the bartenders (they told us a fun fact about Hello Kitty, lol) and ended up standing by the bar to enjoy the music for the rest of the evening. This happened maybe around 11:10pm that night: There were a few people passing by me since we were by some stairs, but there was a guy that came up and suddenly stood VERY CLOSE to me on my left, so I moved a bit more to the right where my friend was. It gave me *major anxiety* seeing this guy come up quickly, but I just tried to ignore him. Next thing I know, he reached behind me and groped my lower back - I freaked out. I moved out of the way pretty quickly and was in shock. I'm sure the guy felt rejected (boo fucking hoo) which prompted him to SHOVE me and push me into my friend. I followed him and wanted to push and fight back. My adrenaline was at an all time high - I kept shouting to get people to stop him, but unfortunately my voice was drowned out by the music. It sucks that I didn't have any other witnesses other than my friend, nor did anyone stop this guy! He left the venue quickly. My friend told me to stay back, and that I didn't want to follow him outside in fear of something worse happening to either one of us. Sinking feeling whenever I think about this asshole still out there somewhere trying to cop a feel from someone's daughter. I told security and they were empathetic + respectful about it. Realistically, I knew there was nothing they could really do since the guy got away. Don't know if he still goes here to this day. I just wanted to enjoy the rest of the night, since my friend and I live almost an hour out and looked forward to this night for a while. I started crying out of anger, pretty sure I looked like a deer in headlights after I was done. Feeling violated and getting touched by a stranger without your consent will do that to you. Some folks came up to me from the bar area up front and asked if I was okay, and gave me some water. I really appreciated their kindness that night. I was on edge for the rest of the night, and ended up leaving earlier than expected anyway. I know it took me a while to say anything about this, but it's kind of insane that some grown men are incapable of keeping their hands to themselves. Not that it matters what I wore, but I had on all men's clothing that night. Bulky denim jacket, big shirt, jean shorts -- thought presenting myself more masculine would make me feel safer being out at night as a woman. Anyway, shout out to my friend for helping keep both of us safe -- and thank you to the security who worked that night. Just want to put this PSA out in case any other woman or femme presenting folks out there are in doubt about sharing their experiences. Not just here, but anywhere else out there in the world and around the Bay. Stay safe and look out for each other please.

Great drinks and amazing music. I have gone to several shows, and each time it is a different, but fun experience. I love the plethora of choices here.

Ask the Community - The Ritz

    What's the crowds age?

The events determine the majority of the ages of the people coming to the Ritz. Gimme Gimme Disco has a lot of 20's-30's and a smidgen of 40's-late 50's. It's a great venue to see shows up close though.

Does the club require a vaccination proof or test?

I went to Emo Nite and no they did not check for vaccinations. I wish they did. I got covid a few days after the event, not sure if I got it from there but hoping they start to require proof of vaccination.

Is there seating for elders? Would like to bring my parents to the Trish Toledo show on Wed. 10/20/21.

Seating is extremely limited and is first come first serve. There are 4 tables with bench seating in the VIP section and bar stools along the bar and upper dance floor side bar. On extremely rare occasions we have seated events and for those we… Read more

Does the club have a mask/ vax policy?

Mask required for entry, no vax requirement currently.

    Is it 18+?

    The Ritz is 21+

    Is there a bag policy?

Bags subject to search upon entry and re entry. No weapons allowed but personal protection devices (mace, tazers, etc) can be checked at the door. No outside food or beverages.

If doors open at 8:00 when does the opening act generally start? I'm going to the show this Saturday (5/11).

Doors at 8 typically means opener at 9.

Is there a dress code for music shows?

No, there is never a dress code.

    Is there any seating?

Depends on the night. Usually there are first come first served stools at the bar and on the side as well as a few seats at the vip area. Busy nights we remove the stools and sometimes VIP is reserved for clients. On occasion we have seated… Read more

    Do they have free WiFi?

    No.

Do they have a coat check?

Coat check is mainly open during the colder months. On busy nights it is usually open, too.

Can you buy tickets in person at the venue before the show to avoid ticketfly fees?

For shows that sell tickets (most do) in advance, www.ticketweb.com, is the clubs main ticket agent. Additionally you should be able (there may be exceptions) to get tickets… Read more

It's much better as a place to gather friends and drink. The music is overall pretty well-selected. It's not too mainstream, but also not too obscure where you're just questioning what's going on. Happy Hour is much better because the bouncer in the picture below is not present. Story: So my friend tells me their coworker is celebrating a birthday party here. I think, "great!" I come here for Happy Hour on Fridays and it will be a great time once again. It's about to be 1:00am and we're patiently waiting in line to get in. Harlot tells us there's a cover to get in but since a friend is having a birthday here and they have a table, we shouldn't have to pay. The bouncer tells us if the owner of the table comes out to collect us we can come in. After waiting for a while we just ask the bouncer if he can just check the table list for our names so that we don't have to wait for the friend. This is when the bouncer flips 180. He tells we not allowed in anymore and doesn't want to let us in. We think like you just promised us something else. He tells us we're being annoying and tells us to get out of the line. My friend gets real upset and asks why he changed it all up all of a sudden. This is when the bouncer picks up the rope dividers and starts pushing them towards us so that we move out of the line. We essentially don't move but the bouncer keeps edging closer with the ropes and it feels like he's trying to intimidate us with his height. Since we don't move bouncer puts his hands up to get us to move and makes contact with my friend. My friend flips out and doesn't understand what constitutes that kind of behavior from a bouncer. Look I understand that a bouncer's job is difficult having to deal with drunk people but I believe it's common courtesy to know not to put your hands on a customer. I'll take that your mad and frustrated any day but the fact that you have to resort to pushing an individual to get what you want is not ok. You originally had me at 5 stars but you are now down to 1 which has been rightfully deserved by the bouncer in the photo.

I attended the show at this alternate location in SF on Friday night, and had a blast as usual. The venue worked well for the event, for the most part. No balcony seating like the DNA Lounge (the usual spot for Mortified), but they had more bar height tables and chairs for couples on the side, and open seating both on the floor and along the back wall on a raised level of the main room. A small bar in the back corner too. Excellent lighting, and great view of the stage from anywhere. Technical difficulties occurred at multiple points of the event, related to the sound and screen display. They did short music clips in between readers' performances since there was no live band for this particular show. Sometimes the music volume would be excruciatingly loud, and at times the images were projected off the screen or were accidentally changed mid-performance. Can't speak of the nightclub atmosphere here, as it's been decades since I've experienced that. But based on my recent visit, I'd say the venue overall was decent for an event space, and even if not perfect, I still had a good time.
