My son has very coarse thick Asian hair so he has a difficult time finding a right barber. So when I made the appointment, I mentioned my son's hair "situation ". This is my husband's favorite barbershop, hands down. We are out-of-towners but travel to SLO 3-4 times a year. Every time we are in the area we ALWAYS stop for a cut at The Ritual. Sammy has been cutting my husband's hair for years and he consistently gives a perfect cut every time. If we have a really special occasion (anniversary, new job, wedding, etc.) we will make the drive to see Sammy. Book at least two weeks out to get a spot with him. It's worth it! read more

Rude Staff. I walked in today and asked to try on a pair of boots that I saw in the window. I was wearing sandals and told the staff I didn't have socks on and asked if they had a pair for me to borrow. The guy behind the counter piped up and suggested trying some plastic bags while the girl behind the counter suggested condoms. Trying to be funny, I get it. Then the guy behind the counter walks to the back of the store, I thought perhaps to show me where to sit. He then proceeds to pull out a bag of caramel corn and plops himself down on a barber chair and starts munching away staring into space. I'm not making this up. I wanted to say something or leave immediately but waited until the girl brought me the boots to try. Today, 3/24/2025, my son & I had an appointment at the Ritual. Mike M. cut my son's hair. I told Mike M. and Mike Rose that we are new to this barber shop. Both acknowledged. It was our first time at the Ritual. I was sitting not facing Mike M. After 10 minutes, my son sat next to me and had a frown on his face. His head was totally cut all around down to almost being bald. I was very shocked. Then I asked my son if his haircut was OK. He didn't respond but got up to give a tip to Mike M. He then sat back down still looking sad. Then Mike M. charged me $30. Mike Rose called me next to cut my hair, and he was more careful in cutting my hair. We are very disappointed in what Mike M. did to my son's hair. This has been a very traumatic & terrible experience for both of us. We will NEVER go to this barber shop again. Please just come here. I moved here from Orange County (Socal) and I was worried since I usually got my haircut by asians. I came to The Ritual because of the good reviews, and just wow. Jasmine is awesome. I got 2 haircuts so far from her, and the first time I came, she left such a great impression. She knew a lot about Asian hair and made sure to cut my hair in a flattering way. She pays special attention to detail and gave me a crash course on hair and styling. Not only that, she knows hair so much that she knew with one glance that the photo reference I showed her was not possible on my head/hair. But she modified it and tried her best to give me a similar cut. Which turned out even more amazing that the photo I showed her. She'll be my go to in SLO from now on. If she isn't available, she said her husband has a similar style to her, so that's good to know. I'm sure all the barbers here are great, not just Jasmine, so give them all a shot. I had a 1pm appointment. I am new to the area and had no idea how bad downtown parking was. I called to let them know I would be 5 minutes late. It took longer to find parking than I realized. I was 15 minutes late. They refused service and charged me $20 for not showing up. I asked to reschedule but they would not waive the $20 fee. The receptionist was extremely rude. I felt unwelcome and the receptionist couldn't care less about me as a customer. STAY AWAY unless you want to be treated terribly. read more

Loved it. Went for a beard trim, kind of just for the fun of it, since I don't really have much to work with, and anyway my efforts at trimming my own beard are amateurish and laughable. I might have really just lucked out because of a cancellation or something). There was only a minute wait till the boys could jump in their chairs and honestly we were 15 min early for one of the appointments. I didn't need to give the barbers much direction. I just told them to do what they do and make them look good. That's what they did! Awesome cuts and done in less then 25 minutes I believe. Was back in Osos from LA and much in need of a haircut. Googled/Yelp'd salons and barbers in SLO and saw terrific reviews for The Ritual so decided to give them a try. Wasn't disappointed at all! Ray provided me with a terrific cut of my shaggy mane and made me look respectable once again. He's a capable and professional barber and a nice guy to boot. The barber shop is located within a store that also happens to carry some of the finest curated selection of men's clothing and other paraphernalia (there's an adjacent retail store for women with equally nice offerings). We could use a branch of this retail establishment in LA! Highly recommend. read more

The obvious retro-appeal is here, but since it is obviously "fabricated", it is not a true olde school barber shop...that I remember as a kid. Sadly, what I remember as a true olde school barbershop is almost extinct, since you need barbers that are close to my age. There are still ones, here & there, like in Shell Beach. Happily, The Ritual, and similar retro-barbers does a nice job of simulating the vintage aspects, that kind of seem as pampering to men. The Ritual has excellent friendly service & they happily took me as a walk in. The cost is quite fair & is about what a decent uni-sex hair salon would cost. Since they do a far better job, it is a real bargain! They do a far better job of cutting men's hair that most hair salons, and are likely the only places where they can weld a fearful super-sharp straight edge blade to also give you a close shave. Since one can have a pimple or two, the straight edge blade will cut off the tops...they do stop the bleeding with some sort of astringent. While I did not feel the injury, I did feel the burn of the astringent. I was not informed of this, and was a bit taken aback. Apparently, "real men" are suppose to stay silent, grin, and bear it. Thank the lord, I am not on a blood thinner! All in all, the barber did an excellent job & it was likely the best hair cut that I had in dozens of years. It was all the more remarkable, since I do not have much hair to work with anymore. My honey also watched the process with a curious smile & was really happy with the result....so the wife acceptance factor was quite good. Since I have all the needed professional materials at home, I usually have my honey trim or cut my hair. I just bought a new Oster T-trimmer which excels at facial & other hair close trimming... The old one has a dull blade, and since the blades are so pricey, it does not cost too much more to get a whole new system. The next time I am in downtown SLO and feel the need to look good & benefit from some "pampering" I will return...but I may ask them to skip the razor part...since I do not need to look that good! read more

If I could give zero stars I would. Please do not expose yourself to these irresponsible people. No one was distancing. Only one person was wearing a face covering and it did not even cover his nose. No one else was even wearing a mask. No plexiglass, no wiping the chairs down. Nothing! If we get the virus after my son's had his haircut there, we are coming after you, Mike. I have ZERO respect for any establishment not following the rules for the CA State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. Reporting you to them as well as to the city of SLO.
