We have been attending skating lessons at The Rinks in Poway for a few months and have been thoroughly enjoying the experience. We have worked with several coaches, all of whom have been wonderful. I have been calling the all morning and only got to an automated system. No one ever answered. All I wanted to know was if today they had public skating. A week ago the site said yes. Now the schedule is empty and I don't want to drive all the way out there and not be able to skate with the kiddo. Horrible impression. read more

The good: they've brought back public skating. It's good to get out and get some exercise. The bad: At the time of posting, they are not enforcing a mask wearing policy. The ugly: I estimate that 1/3rd of skaters aren't wearing a mask at all and another 1/3 or more are wearing the wrong type of mask or wearing it too loosely. Some claim "masks don't work". Of course they don't work if you don't wear the right mask in the right way. It's your choice to wear a mask or not right? Nobody should be able to tell you what to do right? It should be your choice if you want to ride a motorcycle on the freeway, without a helmet too right? (it was before we evolved) It's should also be your choice to not wear a seat belt right? (it was before we evolved) It should also be your choice if you want to smoke in a crowded restaurant (it was before we evolved) and it should also be your choice if you want to drive 120 mph in a broken down pick up truck during rush hour on the freeway. Shouldn't it also be your choice if you want to defecate on the table at a five star restaurant packed with dignitaries? If they don't like it they should stay at home right? People who try to say that wearing a mask can be a choice in a crowded indoor setting right now are illogical, delusional and self-centered. We are in the midst the worst viral blizzard, of the worst pandemic in 100 years. People without masks are risking the health of those around them and contributing to an overwhelmed emergency healthcare situation. In the past month case rates have gone up by 10x (900 %) and now we are finally seeing these cases ripple through to hospitalizations which are going up too. A friend died of covid this week. He was only 42 years old and thought that he didn't ever have to wear a mask because he was young and he'd been vaccinated. He was wrong... read more

Enrolled in Hockey 1 for my kid who has taken beginning ice skating classes elsewhere. Midway through the session, they combined Basic Skate 1 and Hockey 1 into the same class, which meant they were brand new kids constantly entering the class, half of whom were interested in figure skating, not hockey. I spoke with Kristen who said that the skills in Basic Skate and Hockey 1 are basically the same and that they regularly evaluate kids based on ability. Unfortunately, the instructors for the class aren't consistent and so this may lead to evaluation issues. Some of the instructors were really good and some were meh. If Basic Skate and Hockey 1 are the same class, then why list Hockey 1 as a separate class, describe specific hockey skills that will be developed, and require participants to purchase hockey gear? On a positive note, the front desk and pro shop staff are super nice and helpful and the ice is well-maintained. read more

we have been to numerous hockey games here... the kids say the ice is great to skate on and they like the locker rooms... as a parent who is watching...i like the seating set up...it's basically stools and a few high top tables that can be moved around to wherever you want to put them! It's insanely cold in here but i wrap myself in coats and blankets to stay cozy. there is a "warm room" where they sell snacks. We usually hang out there until game time. parking is super easy... costco and fast food spots are close by if you want to grab food before or after. read more

Customer service is great. They're always very courteous and helpful. Their skating instructors are all very nice and patient. It's a great place for skate lessons, but they don't have very man public skate or figure skating times available for my high schooler who gets out of school at 3:45pm Between the people lugging around giant skate bags, trying to pickup/drop off skates at their rental counter, and people shuffling through, the walkway gets pretty crowded between skate sessions, but it clears up quickly enough. They have tall metal stools to sit and watch your kiddos through the plexiglass but not much else. read more

Small rink with very little seating, no bleachers. Not ideal for hockey. No warm area to hang in either.

This rink has the worst ice out of all the rinks I've been to. And it's the coldest too! Brrr! Other than the ice, I like this rink. The people working here are friendly and helpful. It doesn't seem too crowded during public skating. And it's nice that it's not too far from my house. read more

I personally have skated at every rink in san diego. Poway Ice is the most hockey focused rink in town. They cut the ice regularly and its not like skating on a rough parking lot like many other local rinks, however during open skate when young skaters are digging their toe picks in it can get rough.. The management has an excellent program designed for creating a great environment for hockey. Is the seating great? No. Is there a "Warm Spot" , Yes the snack bar area.. and they have beer.. I love this rink and their devotion to hockey programming for myself and my children. read more

Great facility right in our backyard! My kids take Learn to Skate classes. Note, you must be a Learn to Skate member to participate in classes. They are currently remodeling the snack bar area. Can't wait for the re-opening! Reasonable prices, friendly staff. My kids have really clicked with some of the coaches. We move to the next level in 2 weeks! Really great programs! read more

My 4 year old started to take skating classes at Poway ice rink early 2018, she is going to take the 3rd session now. She love to skate here and has made so much progress in the last few months. They offer classes at all levels and many options of time to choose from. Good coach to student ratio. Snowplow 1 class ends with animal picking and bubble chasing, making it really fun for the little ones. there is a 'mid term report' to let you know which skill needs more practice, ' end-term evaluation' and a fun short recital at the last class. The best part is practice passes are included in the classes as well. In the last 2 weeks, we saw at least 3 bd parties here as well. The coaches and staffs are very friendly. Some of them know my daughter by name now. Michelle has been excellent in running this place and she is on the ground every time we take class. read more

Michelle Lauerman and all of the crew at Poway Ice do an outstanding job with the Learn to Skate programs! My 9-year-old daughter has been going for the last 6 months. She can get really frustrated when she isn't getting a new skill, and the staff are always super patient with her and encouraging. A friend of ours referred us to this place and we couldn't be happier with the experience so far! Our daughter is 7yrs and our son is 2.5 and neither of them had ever stepped on ice let alone skated before. I reached out to the skating school lead Michelle via email to get some info and details prior to signing them up. She replied in a timely fashion and was very detailed when answering all my questions, I love that. We asked if we could try one lesson free just to see if they liked it prior to signing up for a full spring session and she said absolutely. That's all it took, we signed up immediately afterwards and the kids LOVE it!! The classes start right on time and the instructors are fantastic!! They are all very patient and most importantly you can tell they love what they do, amazing! I've noticed that they offer instruction at all levels, including one on one and they even have an advanced hockey league as well as very experienced figure skaters.
