I had both a positive and not-so-positive experience here. I was safely medically detoxed (nurses Kay and Michelle are amazing and truly care about each patient), and transitioned to residential inpatient "rehab". I mostly enjoyed the program; however, I was put on a "Gender Restriction Contract", which meant I could not engage with members of the opposite sex, because I had a (what they thought was an inappropriate) relationship with another resident. I essentially could not even look at - and ESPECIALLY not speak to/with - ANY member of the opposite sex. Being a kind, courteous, and polite human, I had an especially difficult time following this rule. I could not - and just basically would not - ignore someone who spoke to me, even to respond to, "Good morning!", especially since I'm a grown ass adult and found it ridiculous that I was told who I could and could not speak to. There are several employees at TRS who truly care about the residents - RAs Jasmine, Sarah, Matt, Mikaela, Brandy, counselors Lisa, Alora, and Lillian (Lillian is one tough cookie, but she does truly care, and I came to love her), psychiatrists Paula and Alaa, Alumni Coordinator Jessica (who is AMAZING), Admission Coordinators Ray and Nate, and the Assistant Director Rita honestly, truly are kind, patient people who seem to care about the success of each resident. Having named the "good" employees, there are some employees that a potential patient NEEDS to be made aware of: RA Kelly, a man who is verbally aggressive and abusive, PHP instructor Clay, who makes you think he cares but plays both sides of the fence by telling his boss everything even remotely negative things you do or say, and last - but CERTAINLY NOT LEAST - is the Program Director Daryl-Lyn. Daryl-Lyn is (hands down!) the one of the most negative, biased, judgemental, unhappy human beings I've ever met. She NEVER (and I'm using that extreme word purposely) has anything (!!!!) nice, or even remotely constructive, to say to a patient, ever. If Daryl-Lyn asks to see you in her office, just know it is for something you've done wrong. I actually asked a lot of my co-patients if they ever heard her say anything positive, and not.one.person said yes. All in all, I would say I had an "Eh" experience at Promises Right Step, Houston. I made some lasting friendships but couldn't speak to a lot of them (gender restriction) and felt I was walking on eggshells, was medically detoxed but now am suffering withdrawals from Suboxone prescribed there (essentially they got me addicted to just a different drug), and didn't have to share a bedroom but everyone has to share a toilet/sink restroom with a connecting room. The showers had warm water and great water pressure, but the floor was always gross enough you have to wear shower shoes. Unless you're in PHP, you are allowed ZERO electronics, ESPECIALLY your phone, which is confiscated when you're strip searched upon admission. There aren't beverages 24/7 because they lock the cafeteria, which means no coffee whenever you want - IF the coffee machine is working and not out of coffee, which happens multiple times, every day. Would I tell someone to not go get help there? No. I would just advise them to do their research and weigh the options. Best of luck with anyone struggling with drugs and/or alcohol. They don't care too much on what's going on they just let things happen they do not have a good system I think this place needs to be evaluated they are just ran by people who don't really care the like the counselors Lisa used things I shared with her against me Michelle talks a lot about her own life things Rita in registration is nice and Jessica Alumni Counselor is pretty great Darryl Lynn is not very nice very mean n negative and Donna questioned me when I went back asking me who told me I could go there without asking I was like uh I did my stuff on the phone I thought it was a safe place to be there I thought they'd be happy to help someone get help but they don't really seem to care I think these people running it are there just for a check not really for the people the psychiatrist doctors are good the people that run the groups are great but the staff ehh I would never want to go back there read more

This is by far the best addiction treatment facility in Houston. DeLisa Russell is a world-famous specialist in addiction and trauma and she has brought in a lot of top-quality talent. Even the food is better at their new location. They provide great aftercare and you can go from DETOX to inpatient, to intensive outpatient to recovery groups with the same people. The nicest facility with the best people. Very veteran-friendly; many veterans with complex trauma are there. read more

This is a great facility!! I have been sober for 4 years after attending The Right Step and I'm so grateful for them!!

Avoid this center. I brought a friend here and paid the fees... and I am disgusted at both their treatment of patients (physical restraints, forced medication) and their financial practices. The nurse practitioner advised me that my friend was ready for discharge, and by the time I got there, he was outside and they told me I would pay a $3500 fee (never mentioned, never agreed to) for leaving detox against medical advice. The woman who said he was ready denied saying that, and said that she had said he would be evaluated later and only then free for discharge. Their new 'evaluation' was that he needed to stay two more days. I was on a time payment plan which we replaced with a revised plan... then continued to be billed for the one which was replaced. There are other options out there, please learn from my experience and pick one which is doing good work that is needed... this place is not one such. read more

I got there and patients were randomly coming in while I was doing intake. There were patients dictating who could get their meds and running the Med line so of course they let their buddies go first. They advertise it is holistic, but in reality they let people treat most sessions like it was an NA or AA meeting. There were open drinks when I got into my room, so there were rats in the building bc it wasn't clean. You could see the kitchen staff eating with their fingers while they prepared food, which was low quality and unhealthy. They barely searched my bag so I had no idea if people had weapons or drugs. Multiple fights broke out, partially bc the patients felt like they ran the facility instead of the staff. They started giving out meds way too late for having around 70 patients. Some people could not get their meds and get a good nights rest by 6:30 AM wake up time. Dr. D, Danielle, and Gretchen were amazing counselors so I was able to get something from the experience, but I would not recommend it for anyone serious about focusing on recovery. Go to an AA or NA meeting for free instead of paying to attend them at The Right Step read more

One of the hardest decisions I've ever made was admitting I needed help and check into treatment. I'm glad I chose The Right Step and I'm very grateful for TRS. They worked with me with my deductible payment something other rehab centers wouldn't do. The group sessions with the counselors were small which made it easier for me to share what I needed to talk about. The small groups made it easier to give and get feedback. Do not pay anything up front! This facility will not pay any refunds due. We have been calling everyday and have had to leave a voicemail and send emails. They will take your money immediately because they know you need the help, but will not do the right thing. They owe us thousands of dollars and will not even respond to messages anymore! Right step saved my life. I hated it at first, and no one loves rehab! But it was what I needed. The counselors were fantastic. They kept us busy 24/7. The food wasn't bad. The education and meetings were great. I would recommend it to anyone in need. I was only able to stay 3 weeks, but I recommend a month. One thing I strongly suggest is that they incorporate some exercise, and provide facilities to be active. That would really help! read more

Came in for a 3 hour assessment. When they found out that my insurance would not cover the treatment, they put me in a room with a counselor that was still in training (not certified) without his trainee, and after 3 hours they said that I would be cash pay...which I was fine with, even though it would be thousands - WHAT IS THE WORST PART, is that they didn't even give me a choice. They said that they would look over my assessment and a real counselor would call me within 24 hours to go over a treatment plan, that never happened. No one ever called...they saw a person they thought wouldn't pay because of insurance and didn't even give the human decency of a follow up when they said they would. This shows me that THE RIGHT STEP is only interested in money and not in outcomes. Do NOT go here...there's PaRC that is by Memorial Hermann which is wonderful, and responsible. read more

I was looking for assistance and medical supervision while detoxing from alcohol. Sudden alcohol detoxification can cause crippling, and sometimes life-threatening symptoms. This place seemed friendly at first, but after watching me wait at admissions for the better part of an hour, seeing me shaking with tremors, and only then testing my BP with a score of 157/123, (extremely high by medical standards) they handed me a set of the "rules." The rules resembled that of a Pre World War II Nazi concentration camp. Some rules are there for rational reasons (No mouthwash containing alcohol, no alcohol or drugs allowed, no pornography, respect the confidentiality of all clients, etc.) However, no electronics are allowed at all. No ipods to listen to music, no phones, no TV, no computers. None of any kind. As someone who uses their phone to talk to my support network of friends and family, respond to emails from work, listen to self-help audiobooks, listen to music, and relax while streaming TV shows, I think this rule is utter BULLSHIT. If I wanted to PAY someone my hard earned money to assist me with a struggling detox, I would expect them to make me feel comfortable and accepted. Not locked up, distrusted, and robbed of harmless personal enjoyments. If I wanted that, I could simply enjoy a beer on the street corner and enjoy a free ride and short stay in jail. I would never recommend this place to anyone. read more

Great campus, great program, but if you hate being treated like a child constantly, you might want rethink going here. Nurses are great except the blue-haired girl. Her life is a med error. Tyler, Rudy, and Cynthia are the best people you could ask for. read more
