We haave just returned from the Red Lion, there were 16 of us for our pre-Christmas get together and present distribution. Some of the food was o.k but my 2 daughters-in-law both had to return their lasagne twice as it was cold in the middle and was only just warm when they got it back for the third time. I think this is totally unacceptable, the only thing offered by way of an apology was a free drink each for them, one glass of wine and one diet coke. There were a few dessert orders, my son and I both ordered baked vanilla cheesecake, (bearing in mind my son only likes this dessert as it is very plain and has no other flavour) when it arrived he took one taste and said it didn't taste right, I tried mine and thought it tasted lemony, needless to say he left his. This is not the first time we have been to this pub and been disappointed, vowed not to go again, but thought we'd give it one last try, and believe me this will be the last. When we went to pay the bill and complained we were told that by acceptin g the 2 drinks nothing more could be done. Very poor show. read more

I have been to the Red Lion many times. There is a good selection of food on the 2 for £10 menu. That is 2 mains and a choice of a sweet or starter and you can have the extra course for £2. They now also have breakfast from 7 to 10am an all day brunch as well as their dearer menu. Service can be slow at times busy or not and ask for your sweet early. ALL food is cooked on site. There has been times when the food has been not quite as good as others (different cook maybe). As stated by a previous reviewer the chips are usually cut into rough wedges but unlike most restaurants are freshly cooked and not bought in packs. I think I was there on the day the reviewer had the long wait. I think they were slow complaining and I think they had a refund. No excuses for rudeness or the poor service. If they addressed the service problem they could achieve 5 stars from all. My experience has been good and I would recommend the food, especially at the price. It is very difficult to make money at these prices so do not accept a second class service. read more

I am amazed and suprised by the reviews placed here. I am not sure how these complaints really stack-up as all the negative complaints are placed by people who have only ever placed a single review, nothing moreSomething which I find suspicious in some way. Having dined here myself on several occassions, I have never had a problem in any way. The staff have always been friendly and curtious, if there has been any delay in service, it is because it is a busy pub, so you would expect a short delay in the food reaching the table, but have never waited more than 15 mins for food anyway, even on a very busy saturday night! As for the quality of the food, since December, the food quality has improved greatly and seems to be getting better all the time. Service is quicker than ever and, in honesty, my partner and I could eat elsewhere and pay alot more for poor food Recently ate in an al a carte restraunt, paid 3-4 times the price and the food was no where near as good as this home-cooked style menu! We've had previous cause to complain about the Red Lion when my wife found a piece of porcelain in her food. But like previous reviewers we thought we'd give it another try. What a mistake. This time the starter was served with a side salad, which was completely disgusting. the lettuce wasn't just off, it was slimy. It put my wife off so much, she couldn't bear to eat the rest of the dish, or bear the thought of a replacement. When we came to pay the bill, we asked if the starter could be removed from it. The waitress point blank refused to even listen, saying that it was 'part of a deal' and refused to accept that there was anything wrong with the disgusting fare. We reluctantly paid up and said that we wouldn't be returning. Her reply was 'That's up to you whatever'. Unbelievable!!. We felt so strongly we wrote to the licensee, who hasn't had the decency, or the guts, to reply. Avoid at all costs. There are many other places who charge reasonable prices but with far better quality and service. read more

I have taken advantage of the offer at the R Lion on many occasions. I went recently with my family, booked ahead for a party of 15 people. What a utter dissapointment. 3 members of the party had starters, but the rest of us had to wiath 1hour and 10mins to get our main meal, when we enquired as to the wait the waitress was very rude. 6 of us had the sunday dinner, what a dissapointment. 4 spuds, a few carrots, beef and a yorkshire, it was cold and it took that long to get to us half of our party had finished there meal before mine had even arrived. At least 3 other groups were complaining about the lenght of time they had to wait. It may be cheap but I would rather pay the extra and go to a venue where the food arrived in a reasonable lenght of time and was enjoyable. I was due to go with a party of ten people from work next friday, I have put them all off as I will never be dining at the Red again today was an awfull experience. read more

I cannot belive the service I have never been so disappointed with a meal. The place seemed a bit dirty the staff were awful with a serious attitude problem I actually thought it was there first night, they were that unprofessional. The starter bbq chicken wings had blood in the middle and put a few of us off our meals. The fish was watery with no taste the gravy came out 10mins after our meal with the 3rd time of asking. And all the salad was slimey and did not taste good at all. To sum up really really disappointed and I would never consider going there again read more

Went with a friend for our Christmas lunch today. The starter and sweet were up to standard. The main couse was a big disappointment. We had ordered the turkey dinner. The turkey was tough and unedible, The roast potatoes were soggy and tough, the parsnips were burnt, the sprouts that hard you couldn't put your fork into them and the plate was swimming in gravy. The only edible part was the carrots !! On complaining we were made to feel as though we were picky and were offered a bottle of wine. Won't repeat the experience. read more

The service was very good the food was not bad but the chips are terrible. I cannot eat potato skins and chips are normally a safe bet but they have skins and I don't think they have ever seen a chip pan they are very dry as a result. Will not be eating there again as the potatoes also have skins, the sausage and mash was quite nice but no veg. a few peas would have been nice. read more

The staff are rude from start to finish, no warm welcome here people. As for the food, well when if eventuly arrived, the starter was warm but unpeasent, the main was cold and not cooked well. Sad to see some bad reviews about the food and staff at the Red Lion. we've been going there to dine for the last year and a half and have always found the staff polite and helpful service is alway's excellent and you can't beat the two course for £5 menu. We have always found the food and the staff lovely and we go to different places to eat every week but always come back to the Red.

People, people, it's a very cheap place to eat, if you want five star don't expect to pay a fiver! Go and pay £120 in Chester.
