Falling into the category of 'see and be seen' this is where all the local z-list celebrities like to hang out and pretend they're in London. To be blunt, it gives the impression to be up it's own bum, and obviously welcomes like-minded people. So, what was I doing in a place like this? I went once when it first opened and hadn't yet established a reputation, and again when someone convinced me it would be a good idea to go. When you walk in you get that red carpet feeling, and some people crane their necks to see if anyone important has just entered. The bar is long and hosts a glittering array of cocktails - let me just state at this point that I have no problem with the bar itself, just the people in it. The staff are polite if not overtly friendly, and the drinks are good, if you can afford more than one. However, it's not somewhere I would ever think of going to on a night out. At least not until I get that radical surgery and liposuction I've always wanted.....

The Newz Bar is supposed to be classy and expensive but it just feels false and pretentious. If you have money to burn then book yourself a booth and buy champagne or vodka by the bottle. All the drinks sold here are overpriced but nothing special. The staff are reasonably friendly if you flash your cash, otherwise they are rather snooty and seem to look down on you. Apparently the food is good here but it looks overpriced. Unless you're modelesque, orange and wearing designer clothing you probably won't experience good manners or respect.

The last time i came here they offered large tasty pies like the Pietanic and offered no card payments.. their menu has now changed..no pies :( Anyway this is full of character..with low lying beams..dark, curious and stunning windows. Anyway we retreated back here after finding our favourite restaurant fully booked. The menu is limited with one main fish dish and just one veggie one? Two steak salads were ordered to begin. Comparing this to Solitas I thought it was passable. I Prefer my steak still mooing this was well done and a tad chewy and the salad leaves covered in olive oil.. it was okay for the price. Mains :I fancied some traditional fish and chips..my dad selected the chicken burger . Presentation was good and my haddock looked like a battered shark...huge!! Perched on top of tasty homemade chips and perfect mushy peas. My dad loved his chicken burger stating it was fresh and all homemade. Desserts again were limited.. I had a Eton mess..really tasty bit pricey for what it was..my dad a large slab of sticky toffee cake.. Overall this is a hidden a gem and a good place to retreat when it's busy..with friendly staff, limited but tasty approved food.. two starters, mains, desserts and two round of drinks came to 50 quid..not bad..

Martin's Kareoke is the order of the day for a Friday and Saturday night and if I was to make a call between the two I would err towards Friday just because the abundance of s**tfaced employees from the nearby offices tend to bring a touch more life to the place. There is little more depresing than having only a small group willing to put their hat in the ring for a karaoke night as several middle aged couples watch on silently as they try and think of something to say to each other. A good thing about this place are the curious out-of-towners that it attracts who are staying at the nearby hotels. Either they are often excited, wide-eyed groups enthralled by a night out in Liverpool or are the star attraction themselves as they go mental on their hols and are often up for getting involved with the locals.

It felt as if I'd blinked and it was now suddenly 5am and everyone in the outside world was slumbering soundly, with visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads. This is the sort of pub that is suited more for an afternoon pint. It's also the location where the founders of Saint Francis Xavier's Church met to establish their parish in 1840 so, you know, get going on any big ideas you may have.

I wanted to like Ye Cracke (called "The Crack") simply on name alone since I have the sense of humor of a 14 year old boy, but I've been there twice and won't ever be going back. It's got decent, old pub feel to it and a standard set of drinks behind the bar. Nothing special, but it's definitely a comfy place to go on a rainy night, with the warmth kept inside from the classic leaded windows. Like I said, I wanted to like it, but both times I've been there the regulars have been old, creepy, and standoffish and the staff (save for one male bartender) were completely arrogant. Hooray for you, you work at a minimum wage job in a place that someone famous may or may not have drank in. Do I sound bitter? Well, I should. And here's why: One night, while there with my BF, I accidentally left my phone behind. I didn't realize it until after BF had dropped me off, so I used another phone to call it. A girl who said she was a bartender answered and told me I could pick it up the next day as they had already closed. Ok, no problem. Then, about ten minutes later, text messages started coming in to my boyfriend and ex (who I lived with at the time) from my phone. To my boyfriend across town, the texts begged him for help, telling him my ex was hurting me. My ex then received messages about how I was doing all sorts of nasty with my boyfriend. While one guy was preparing to come fists swinging, the other's ego was slightly hurt by the cruel messages. Okay, I get it. Someone left a phone, you're drunk, mess with people. But to intentionally cause what could be a serious altercation among people you don't know? How pathetic do you have to be? Especially after you told the person you had their phone and she could pick it up. Are you stupid, too? Let's just say that the girl who took my phone was very lucky she wasn't there when I went to go pick it up.

Cosy enough in the winter and a beer garden providing a handy city centre sun trap for summer, The Crack is small and usually busy meaning that you can often find yourself striking conversations with its interesting selection of clientel. For beer connoisseurs it also has a small but regulalry changing selection of ales and ciders to choose from. It also has a decent jukebox - surely a winning element?
