Originally built by Edward I as part of his campaign to conquer Wales, the castle has served various purposes throughout the centuries, including as a fortress, royal residence, and now as a hotel. The castle is often associated with numerous ghost stories and legends, contributing to its reputation as a haunted location. Visitors and staff have reported various paranormal experiences, including sightings of apparitions, unexplained noises, and cold spots. One of the most famous ghost stories associated with Ruthin Castle is that of the White Lady Jane, believed to be the spirit of a woman who suffered a tragic fate. Reports suggest she roams the castle's grounds and corridors, dressed in white. My auntie worked there in the late 60's and recounted many stories from the staffs paranormal encounters. I stayed there last year and was a bit disappointed by the upkeep of the property. It was in a bit of a state of disrepair. It was an interesting experience staying in a castle, but unfortunately I don't think I'd stay there again; it was a one off.

The stableyard itself is often used s an event space for community gatherings such as the recent summer fete. It's a really beautiful area with a lovely relaxed atmosphere. The Well Barn is easily accessed from Liverpool or Southport but retains the peace of the countryside.
