Alas, I discovered this place after the dogs were long gone, but it's still a bloody lovely pub…read more Walking in from a snowstorm outside to a blazing log fire is always a good thing, glancing to your right and eyeing the lineup of 6 ales adds to the magic. It's all set in a very tastefully restored half timber affair, with the grandfather clock out back still on time since who knows when. I had the fish stew based on a recommendation from James and Simon, a couple of regular patrons who can be found propping up the bar and in a few of South Cheshire's other CAMRA-approved establishments, and indeed, it was delicious. So full marks to The Black Lion - I shall be back soon!

The timber framed classic Nantwich black and white building proivdes a lovely setting. Young Adam behind the bar really knows his ales (6 on at any one time, 3 Weetwoods and other local guests) and samples come readily :o) Nice open fire in front bar, some clientelle can be a bit wooden at times and the place sometimes does not quite have the atmosphere it used to have when it was a rough and ready kind of place. We like the front table for people watching across the road at the Cat and Nakatcha, so stay off it! Bought Dick Strawbridge a pint at the bar the other day and met the guy who runs this website, lovely folks! Fave beer here is Weetwood Cheshire Cat..

This place has a reputation for doing good food, so it was picked as a spot to meet up for lunch…read more Inside it looks like an old small pub, you'd never guess they had such an extensive menu - and maybe that's the problem. Amongst our party of six, choices varied from traditional pie and chips and scampi and chips through to vegetarian thai curry and pear and cheese (can't remember the type - stilton maybe?) bake. The place was fairly quiet, but it took 40-45 minutes after ordering before our food arrived - not too bad given that we were busy chatting away, but when we're already hungry, not so great. The food quality was OK too - the pear and cheese bake was well liked, but everything else was just OK (my scampi and chips were good, but the peas were hard). There was also a lack of condiments, salt, pepper and vinegar was it - no ketchup for the burger, no tartar sauce for the scampi. Good beer selection - I had the double hopped ale which hit the spot.

We chose a bottle of wine to compliment our beer plus Lamb Henry for me & the rabbit for the better half. These arrived quite quickly but the veg had obviously missed the cooking being just better then cold! On being returned to the kitchen the meals returned as was but hotter with by now the rabbit dried up & the lamb gaining no benefit from its nth trip to the oven and somehow failed to meet with its promised mint sauce! Further comments elicited no recompense so we paid the bill & left - not to return again
