The chap that served us here was a little odd and I think he overcharged is too, because €5.63 for a pint and a half is more what I expect from London than Chester. Shame as the beer I got, Tyne Pacifica, was certainly my kind of ale. It was noisy so we sought out a seat away from the music and the quiz machines. Unfortunately it was also away from anyone doing any kind of cleaning. The toilets were pretty ropey too. Then as the icing on the cake some drunken singing yobs that we had seen and heard about town decided to top up here. The last part may not be their fault but the beer was the only redeeming feature of an otherwise disappointing visit. Really nice lunch here and great value for the centre of Chester. I had the Wagyu burger which was delicious. It's in s cellar so quite dark but they do have a beer garden space. Good selection of drinks on offer. Staff were friendly too. We ordered at the bar and food came promptly. read more

Nice bar, fish and chips were good. Love the atmosphere. Bartender was helpful to an American who wasn't sure of the menu options. The "tunnel" room is good for conversation, mutes the music from the bar. Definitely recommend! read more

I've only been here for lunch, but I really enjoyed it. They do a special any two meals for £10, or a meal from a small selection and a drink for £5. The food was average quality pub food, and the drinks well priced. What I really liked about this bar was the decor and atmosphere. It's set in a series of vaulted ceiling cellars and has a really dark and cosy atmosphere with various levels of seating styles and comfort. I'd like to try this bar at night, it seems like it'd be quite trendy and busy but with the same luxurious atmosphere. All in all, the food is good value for money, especially at lunch and the service was attentive and fast. It was really easy to relax in here after a long day shopping. read more

Watergates is a great novelty bar - and the ambiance in the old cellar makes the place feel really quite unique. It is of course quite dark and on a busy night can feel a bit stuffy and crowded - but is much more pleasant during the day time. The food is reasonable and the service is fast - but I was less impressed by the drinks - particularly the draught beers which never quite taste right to me. Also service at the bar can be very slow during busy times as it is quite small compared to the overall size of the place. If you do visit, I would advise making for the back of the place which has an extra seating area tucked slightly away from the main part - fewer people and slightly quieter - plus not too far to walk to the bar! read more

Huge stone pillars and archways dominate this wine bar with the feel of a cellar. Quite a busy place, particularly on a Saturday night, a good range of drinks at the Bar too, which is dominated by a vast array of different spirits. There is also a promotion here that gets you accelerated entry to a local nightclub (Babylon, I think). The seating in the bar itself is dominated by large leather seats and high tables, usually occupied though. A better bet is the quieter seating to the back behind a huge iron gate! read more

I rate Watergates. We usually tend to stick this end of town. Ok, prices are a bit more but it's a nicer environment (less teeny boppers). Gets pretty crowded at times but hey, that's part of it's charm! read more

Beneath the rows and at basement level on Watergate Street, this bar and restaurant gives a crypt like, warm feel to a night out with friends. There are a few places to sit and few different rooms to choose from with eerie lighting and stone floors and walls. The bar is well stocked with plenty of staff and this place gets really busy at the weekend. Upstairs there is a terrace with patio heaters which is largely populated by smokers in the winter but by everyone in the summer. Watch your footing up and down the stairs near the entrance - I've seen loads of people trip! Watergates serves food too although i've only ever sampled a wrap at lunchtime which was ok. Wouldn't mind eating there as the wine is good so it'd be good to have something to go with it! read more

This is an unusual bar, set of below groud level with tunnel shaped ceilings. The drinks are not exactly cheap but its a classy place and its a nice atmosphere. The customer service is good. Would recommend for a quiet drink during the week and a good place to start at the weekends. read more

As you walk in it is a very pleasant looking building and very inviting, that is until you reach the bar were the staff are less than inviting. They show no respect for the customers or the management. The food although cheap is far from cheerful and was laughable as the table next could not get as requested tuna melt, asked for twice to be warmed up, many thanks for the incompetence of staff and management, will not bother again as there are better eating establishmentments in Chester. Can be abit of a queue to get in and abit intimidating getting past the bouncers (being quite strict on dress-code and how much you've already had to drink) but worth it once your in. Its prett cool having a drink in a really old cellar, the prices can be abit of a turn off but often very lively and a great atmosphere. When its really busy theres a huge wait for the bar and the main room gets abit squashed, the cellar at the back though normally remains quiet enough for chatting and you can normally find a seat. read more
