When I finally made it a priority to visit, I was far from disappointed. As you whiz past it on the B5130 in Alford it always looks cosy and welcoming, grand and solid. Perfectly in keeping with the houses of Alford, most of which were built as a designed village in the mid-19th century by Sir Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster. The architect was John Douglas and the place has a very unique feel to it. As a side issue, Eaton Hall is just outside the village and can be partly seen from the road, on the left as you exit Alford towards Chester. It was reconstructed in 1874 by the Duke of Westminster and he built a large chapel with a bell tower that bears a stricking resemblance to the better known Big Ben clock tower. It is reported that There is no place like home was played on the bells each time the Duke approached the house. So back to the meat of this review With wonderful open fires, mismatched furniture, excellent beers and wines and a mouthwatering menu, this place is definitely worth a visit. It's a stones throw from the A41 and about a 15 minute de-tour from the M53. Personal recommendations include their delicious homemade beef burger (about £9) and divine bread and butter pudding (£5). It's at the upper end of the relaxed gastro-pub dining spectrum, and rightly so. If I had to be picky, the only down side about this fabulous pub is that someone has to drive to get there! The staff are welcoming and informative. You can sit in the slightly more formal conservatory or the bar area. And there is a lovely garden at the back, away from the road. Dogs are allowed, well welcomed in fact, in the front bar. I'm already looking forward to my next visit :o)

Friendly staff. We shared the garlic flatbread which tasted good - nice and garlic-y! For mains, I have the slow-cooked shoulder of lamb, fondant potato, roast hispi cabbage, caramelised onion purée and sticky lamb jus. Really tasty lamb - its one of those where the meat is all taken off the bone and it comes to you almost like a "block" of lamb. That probably does not sound that appetising but not sure how else to describe it! Tasted good like I said. Almost the best thing though was the hispi cabbage. Yum

Let me say right up front that we caught them on a short staffed night. Wait times for food were insanely long. It was 45 minutes before we even saw our appetizers. But once we got the food, I forgave them. It was that good. The Carne platter for the table was a hit. I particularly enjoyed the lamb koftas. Everyone loved their meals. I highly enjoyed the fish and chips. My wife enjoyed the goat cheese pizza. Despite the long wait, the meal wound up being memorable.

Once a year I frequent small leafy village of Irby for cricketing purposes sampling what little it…read morehas to offer besides Irby cricket club. Well it has Anchor Inn for starters. As far as country pubs go, I really do find it difficult to distinguish between them apart from aesthetically of course. Anchor Inn we have used on numerous occasions as a one stop dink shop, musing once over whether or not to try out some of their fuel offerings. It was a shame it wasn't we've never been on Sundays when they do a sunday roast 2 courses for under £9. I've been told the carved roast beef is rather special. Maybe next time perhaps. It's also a rather puddingtastic place serving up some decent sweet offerings. On the menu they have Toffee Apple Pie or Clotted Cream Cheesecake, Chocolate & Vanilla Sundae or Warm Chocolate Brownie, Lemon Meringue Pie or Melting Chocolate Fondant, White Chocolate & Mascarpone Cheesecake and Sticky Toffee Pudding. Something to take anyone's fancy eh? I am not really ethanol inclined so simpler things such as puddings float my boat in homely country pubs such as the Anchor Inn. So if your boat has floated to Irby set up anchor here, you'll have a merry old time staying "Inn" here.

It's easy to find, as St Elphin's 280ft spire - the third highest of any parish church in England - provides a perfect landmark. The pub is part of an attractive clutch of old buildings next to the church, and is Grade II Listed, although unfortunately there's a large Sainsbury's plonked opposite. Inside, it feels more like a country pub than a town pub: lots of tucked away seating areas (ideal for family or social groups) give it a cosy feel, with some old beams on the ceiling providing the right atmosphere. Real ale fans are well catered for with two regulars and three guest ales, although one of the latter was off on our visit. The food menu is extensive and features traditional pub grub, with main meals, baguettes, sandwiches and baked potatoes. There's a good vegetarian selection, too, and staff were friendly and helpful. The 10 minute walk to the pub from Warrington Town Centre passes several other old pubs, also serving real ale, on Buttermarket Street and Church Street, which would make for a perfect real ale pub crawl, ending at the Ring O'Bells. There's a bus stop a few yards away to get you back to the bus station, if needed!
