Located in the beautiful Cheshire countryside on the outskirts of Delamere forest, The Fishpool Inn states that their "environmentally friendly, open fronted kitchen is a hive of creativity where our passionate, talented chefs work their magic as they cook freshly prepared meals using only the finest, locally sourced ingredients."
I have visited a couple of times since it's costly re-opening in 2013 and have been nothing but impressed, fingers crossed it would deliver again on such a special occasion (my 30th birthday - meal 1 of 3 :))
The menu is quite extensive (almost too extensive for someone as indecisive as me), however in terms of starters there was only one dish I wanted (and had wanted since deciding to go the week before), the confit Gressingham duck leg, truffled potato velouté, candied figs and red wine reduction.
It was a superb dish to start the evening. The duck was melt-in-your-mouth, the candied fig added a nice sweetness and the red wine reduction was packed with flavour. The potato velouté was a little non-existent but to be honest it wasn't needed. A wonderful dish.
For my main I opted for a classic slow roasted pork belly, apricot and sage stuffing, crackling shards, caramelised apple, smoked bacon puy lentils, red wine reduction.
Again this dish tasted as good as it sounded. The pork belly was sweet and tender, with the stuffing managing to be both sweet and savoury and therefore complimenting the meat superbly. The caramelised apple added a delicious sharpness and best of all the puy lentils were earthy and cooked to perfection (not too hard but with a little bit of bite to them). The crackling shard was a little gimmicky but it was as good as crispy pig fat can get!
After practically licking the ceramic off the bowls on my starter and main I was nearly too full for a dessert, but you only turn 30 once. I ordered the homemade waffles, caramelised banana, salted caramel, vanilla ice cream and toasted almonds. A fantastic idea, but in its production the waffles were unfortunately slightly burnt, and therefore every time I ate them it ruined the taste of the rest of the wonderful ingredients. The Fishpool Inn is genuinely a delightful and impressive pub and restaurant. The kitchen is obviously full of talent and the ingredients as fresh as they come.
Sadly, what really let the whole night down was the poor service. My nan ordered some water upon sitting down at the table but waited over 15 minutes for it (despite a prompt) until one of us actually got up and went to the bar to get it ourselves. We also had to wait much too long for our second bottle of wine, ordered when the mains were brought over but only arriving when we had nearly finished our desserts!
Service aside (although bear this in mind when deciding to visit, I wouldn't recommend making plans for afterwards) this was a great way to start my birthday celebrations. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting something a little better than your bog-standard pub fare. read more
