The Red Lantern Kitchen was a true hit! As you walk in, you are greeted by a very friendly wait staff. Open seating with an eclectic atmosphere. My wife and I ordered the chicken dumplings and two of the bento boxes (teriyaki). Everything was delicious and well prepared. The lunch bento box had your choice of meat, California roll, 2 dumplings, spring egg roll and your choice of rice for $12.95. The teriyaki chicken was delicious with a good overall sauce. Flavorful and left us wanting more. The sushi was refreshingly good and the rice was a perfectly prepared. Our waiter was very friendly easy going and very good. Another place with dull, ok food. You don't need msg to make food tasty, but what you do need is SPICES. Herbs and spices. Why don't locals know this. So the food seems "clean" - no msg or other junk added. However, it was virtually tasteless. I mean, c'mon, add some garlic, onion, ginger, chile,... there're hundreds of options to add flavor. So yeah, food was bland. First time I got the chicken katsu bowl. The chicken was a bit bland, like the chicken itself had zero seasoning, not marinated for flavor, nothing. The breading was ok. Tempura was ok. Second time, I got Sweet and Sour Pork Soba. It wasn't breaded like most places, and that was ok, because I am Keto. But,... I was also a bit glad that there wasn't a lot of sauce, which is usually sugary elsewhere. However, the sauce in hand, was just like water with a little bit of redish something or other. Sweet and Sour is literally sugar (or SOMETHING sweet, like, perhaps, pineapple... ) and vinegar. This was a bowl of Soba with ten, maybe, 1/2" square chunks of tasteless pork, and 2 TB of cabbage. Bland. Unspiced. Boring. Would I eat there again? Probably not. Unless I was more in the mood for "clean" food, then tasty food. It IS possible to do both! read more

After my friend convinced me to join him for lunch, I reluctantly agreed. Prior visit was subpar but he offered to pay so I went for it. I ordered noodles with teriyaki chicken , I must say it was flavorful . My only issue was the quarter size pieces of chicken (total of 5) and rest was noodles . For $13.50 for a plate of noodles , I don't recommend you ordering this plate. Who knows, maybe you'll get more teriyaki chicken on your plate then mind. My advice to you , do better! read more

This was the 2nd time I've eaten at The Red Latern. Was not impressed, Gave them 3 stars because hopefully they read the reviews and try to do better. I got the Teriyaki Chicken Bento Lunch Box. The chicken was so tough. I also ordered an Wonton appetizer. They were over cooked. And no chili sauce except some crap in a packet. Haven't tried the spring roll or dumplings that came with it. It did come with a California Roll. It was good. But barely any wasabi was included. Service was good. And, I just read on Yelp, posted by The Red Lantern that they want to attract "younger people"! Today, we went to try out the new restaurant in town, The Red Lantern Kitchen. My wife ordered the tofu with fried rice, and I had the steak with noodles. Everything was good. Took my mom here for lunch. Diet off tempera vegetables were great. I personally got katsu chicken bento box, portion and price $12.99 was perfect for lunch and it was filling. However, chicken could have been seasoned better. My mom got the orange chicken, she said was amazing. She got the noodles instead of rice, she was getting a weird musky taste. They did help with the situation and gave her a couple dumplings instead. All and all it was an okay experience, enough to specifically drive to the other side of town for no. If I'm in the area might try again for something different. My biggest pet peeve with any restaurant.. $3.42 for a 20oz. Bottle of Coke product, you actually get 16oz bottle. Why is this important well, you advertise 20oz everywhere online and no free refills. Needs to get with the program there especially when you sell salty food. read more

I will say first, the food is delicious. I have no problem with the food. However, the restaurant is reckless with planning. They close down early and constantly change their hours. This is very disruptive when you get your family together and go there and they are closed! Stressful even. They changed their hours recently and they posted that they close at 6pm on Sundays. So we called before going yesterday (Sunday) around 5:15pm and they were already closed. I'm done trying. In the past four weeks, they were not open during their posted hours on four occasions. Not cool. Time wasting, frustrating and wasting our time and money (Gas). Totally disrespectful. Unreliable. read more

Wanted to try the new asian restaurant in town, and was very disappointed. They use very cheap ingredients, with tiny portions of protein and a mountain of noodles. The BBQ beef was just plain beef with a super sweet sauce, and the sweet and sour pork tasted like bottled teriyaki sauce. Definitely not authentic asian food, with not one asian person in the front or kitchen. It wasn't terrible tasting, but for the price, I would much rather support the better asian restaurants in town--even asian buffet is better than this place. They left a lot to be desired. read more

We were fans of the previous location of this innovative culinarian that offers a Pan-Asian fusion. The current location is just as accessible and offers a far more appropriate and pleasant decor. We visited at about 2:45 pm mid-week and so most of the lunch crowd had left. I had the lunch special which included their tasty orange shrimp, rice (you have choices) and two vegee spring rolls. My husband had their dinner selection of Asian BBQ beef and vegees over soba noodles. We both enjoyed our meals after an appetizer of their spicy tuna sushi roll. Excellent! read more

I imagine they have better plates than the Katsu, but the Katsu is very basic for the price. I think sauce and breading upgrades and more tender pork would kick it up to the nearly $20 price they charge. For now, and it's only one meal, it was disappointing. BTW, the poke salad looked good. Delicious food! Yay! I'm so excited to have Red Latern in Las Cruces. We so needed this restaurant.

I dropped in for lunch at the recently opened Red Lantern Kitchen in the plaza at Missouri Ave and Telshor. The restaurant is owned and managed by David Chacon who has had several other ventures in Las Cruces in recent years. Mr. Chacon learned his trade under the master Tatsu Miyazaki a well known chef in the southern New Mexico area. As I entered the restaurant I was immediately greeted by a waitress and led to a table. I found this restaurant to be casual and on the smaller side with about twelve tables on site. There are some chairs near the entry for people waiting on takeout orders. Upholstered banquette seating runs down a side wall. The Red Lantern Kitchen is attractively decorated with oriental fixtures and art. The restaurant was clean and well managed even though the one waitress was handling everything by herself in the front of the house. The overall ambiance is nice...a great improvement over the previous establishment. (And, the restaurant was quiet, almost serene, and not noisy as one reviewer stated!) The menu is best described as Japanese and Asian fusion and selections are somewhat limited. Seafood appetizers, fried rice, katsu (breaded chicken or pork with vegetables), sushi rolls, sashimi, and soba noodle dishes are the main features of the menu. The prices are reasonable, the norm. Today I ordered a soba noodle dish with sweet teriyaki chicken. The meal took about fifteen minutes to arrive at the table. After dropping off the dish the waitress never followed up until she brought the check when I was finished. Not complaining, just a statement of fact. The soba noodles dish was presented on an attractive plate. It was comprised of chicken with a sweet teriyaki sauce drizzled over it, some flavorful buckwheat noodles, and slices of carrot, green onion, bean sprouts and cabbage. The chicken seemed to have been dredged in cornstarch before frying which gave it a slightly crisp texture. Overall, the meal was quite tasty, but I must add that it was also VERY OILY. Now I realize a lot of oriental cooking is done in an oily wok and I don't mind that myself, but for those who prefer not to have oily food you might want to skip this dish. Just sayin. I myself enjoyed my meal and I would judge it to be in the "B+" range...meaning good but nothing outstanding. For the overall dining experience I would give it around FOUR STARS...meaning pretty good. The Red Lantern Kitchen is a nice little addition to the Las Cruces dining scene. (PS...if you are into seafood and sushi you may want to try some of those options at the Red Lantern.) read more
