I've eaten here twice, one for breakfast which was good enough and once for lunch which was terrible (avoid the fish and chips at all costs-yes I know it's Indiana ) and the service staff seems to be understaffed which creates real problems when the place is busy. The best restaurant in town (in my opinion) - Red Geranium has a lovely atmosphere both indoors and outdoors. My steak in the steak salad was done to perfection. Avocado dressing? Yes please! Our apps that we ordered were delicious: goat cheese ball and the "sticks" which were like a cross between an egg roll and a panini. Their menu changes with the season, which I always love to see. Phenomenal! Food ! Service ! Ambience! Patio! It was a perfect place to spend my anniversary. I enjoyed the Pork Tenderloin special. The steak was perfect and cooked to temperature. There was a White Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding and the review from those at my table and you could hear throughout the patio was this was no typical bread pudding. If you like white chocolate, chocolate, and cake then this dessert is the best mix of them all. I would return to The Red Geranium specifically for the beautiful patio and delightful food. I had the Florentine Eggs Benedict which were 2 perfectly poached eggs on tender English muffins, dressed (not drowned) in freshly made Hollandaise sauce. Simply divine! Another of our party enjoyed the tater tot poutine - what's not to love about crispy bacon and cheese tater tots in brown gravy? The Monte Cristo is made with fresh bread that, once the sandwich is assembles, is dunked in funnel cake batter before being deep-fried. Server said a large party caused the problem and that because we ordered soup and salad, we were delayed. The place is pricey-$25.00 for 2 drinks, but quality costs. Always dine at The Red Geranium on our day trips to New Harmony each autumn. We have never been disappointed.

It had been several years since we have dined at this restaurant. I was excited to go again remembering how wonderful the food and ambiance were the last time. So disappointed this time. The menu is tired and not the least creative. It appears that most food is pre-made and not chef prepared. My husband is not much of a meat eater and prefers chicken. There were only 2 chicken dishes. One was the pecan crusted chicken, which is deep fried, but you won't know that unless you ask. The other is chicken Rockefeller which is chicken over pasta. We opted for the pecan chicken not knowing it was deep fried until the table next to us asked how it was prepared. When we got our meals I could tell that this was a purchased breaded chicken breast that was thrown into the deep fryer, not hand breaded or pan fried. It came with mashed potatoes and broccoli rabe. The potatoes were good, the Rabe was very tough with no seasoning. My husband asked to substitute the risotto for the mashed potatoes. They forgot. The waitress was overworked and training a new person at the same time. She was serving the entire restaurant and the patio as well. Service was very slow and from listening to others, many mistakes were made. I had hoped to salvage the dinner by enjoying a piece of their legendary coconut pie. But they don't make it any more. None of the desserts were chef made. They had several types of cheesecake, a chocolate cake and a cobbler, but none made in house. The restaurant is still a beautiful, cozy place, but the food is not worth the price. read more

Brunch on Valentine's Day sounded like a good idea to me. So we followed the Wabash river downstream to New Harmony and the Red Geranium. Remarkable that such a nice place can be found in such a small town. Dining area is simple, low key, lovely. Menu is more breakfast/lunch than a blend of brunch options. But what they got is pretty good. Wife had the steak and eggs. Steak was first rate. I had the tortellini, also fantastic. Service was excellent. All smiles and hospitality from our well dressed, friendly server. Shortcomings? Asparagus with the steak and eggs was shriveled and limp. As the only vegetable on the plate, it's flaccidity was pronounced. Maybe a more generous serving of fruit on the plate? My shrimp cost me an extra $10. Kinda steep for four of these guys. But they were so good, I almost didn't mind. No, wait! $10!! A final thing that is peaking as my greatest peeve: cold butter. Can't spread it on bread. So that's a lot of criticism. I really liked the Red Geranium. No hesitation recommending for a nice meal. Reasonable price and attention to detail that just isn't going to be found outside of metro area establishments charging much, much more. One regret, just not enough room for dessert. read more

Just left 2 hours ago today. Nice dining facilities inside and separate bar area. Food looked good and reasonably priced. Made the mistake of eating in a very quaint and beautiful outside patio area on a beautiful afternoon. Left with no one eating half their food as the flies were so bad they were crawling all over our food. You couldn't eat fast enough to beat the flies to it. We asked how they could not have recommended that we eat inside in light of the problem. Asked for a manager but none was on site or so we were told. Recommended contacting a quality pest management firm to help. We paid our bills in full as the waitress and other employees shouldn't! be punished for bad management. read more

I'm not sure what the other reviewers experiences were like, but my mom and I had a fabulous time. The patio was open and they had a musician playing light guitar music. There were tiki torches and pretty hanging lights decorating the space. There was a Mexican buffet, $11. Delicious and authentic! The soft white cheese, bowls of cilantro, and Mexican lasagna made my night. Our server always had water ready, was fun and friendly, and allowed us to hang and chill and enjoy the atmosphere. I have to update my review because this place does not offer any breakfast. They do have danish and other high carb things, but don't expect a true breakfast. Due to this change, I will need to stay closer to Evansville, which is disappointing because I like the New Harmony Inn and the location. The service is unbelievable slow. Server is taking orders from guest who just came in and I am still waiting to order And my coffee cup is still empty. Imagine that I started my review and my cup is now filled and order was taken. The food does look very good Nice presentation on the French toast. Moved from 2 star to 3 now. The view is great overlooking the yard and swan lake nice light jazz to listen while nursing my coffee. Which is now empty again. Ordered the red geranium breakfast. The bacon is thick the eggs cooked just right. Fresh fruit. And I ordered a side of ham. Very nice breakfast. Moved to 4 stars And my cup is full again. I am happy. read more

The Red Geranium is back!!! And I mean that as someone who used to visit from out of town on special occasions. Moved to New Harmony 4 years ago and The Red Geranium was good but not consistent. Let me assure you as someone who eats there often ( in the bar for burgers and fabulous French onion soup) in the dining room for an incredible menu of surf and turf to lamb chops, IT IS FABULOUS!!! The food, the lovely environment and the incredible service makes this a must if you visit New Harmony or if you live here! On rare occasions the chef prepares a dessert like a deep fried chimichanga filled with cheesecake and strawberries and served with a scoop of maple nut ice cream! If it isn't available beg!!! A lot of restaurants are still struggling Post Covid. But the Red Geranium has made it and they have done it brilliantly!!!! read more

A perfect example of "resting on its laurels". New Harmony deserves better. The well-curated paintings help elevate the interior above the level that one might call "homey", but homey isn't necessarily a bad thing. We chose the patio, and the verdant views from both the patio certainly give the restaurant a character not the least matched by the food or the service. If the service hadn't been so awful, I'm still not sure the food would have been better than average. The fact is, it was a brunch menu with a mere seven items, none of which were ambitious and each of which only different slightly from its alternate. (E.g., a breakfast platter with either sausage or bacon were listed as two separate items.). In other words, the pickens were slim to begin with, so the result needed to be top-notch to impress. And, with an atmosphere like The Red Geranium, the overall appearance still held promise. Alas, it was barely shy of a failure. The coffee was acceptable as was the scrambled egg hash, but it hardly turned into something worth a mention. The only reason the meal proved memorable was because of how dang long it took to get it: well over an hour, and while the server was attentive and apologetic during the first 30 minutes, when he finally said, "Any minute now", only to leave us waiting another 40, it was hard to be very tolerant. Everyone else was experiencing the same delays. The management (I think?) came and apologized and offered the predictable litany of excuses: they weren't expecting the rush, overwhelmed all at once, etc etc. Except that, besides one very large table, they didn't HAVE a rush. The patio was half full. As others have noted, if The Red Geranium didn't have a monopoly on what one might call "fine dining" in New Harmony, it would have closed decades ago. But sadly, it's an institution. Further evidence of the kick-in-the-pants this town needs to become a real tourist destination rather than just a curiosity. And the Red Geranium is hardly the right kick--more like a wilted flower given an ice path to keep the appearance of perkiness. Yup, that just about sums it up. read more

So I was a little skeptical at the location and restaurant due to the lack of patrons ...but man let me tell you... I ordered a pecan crusted chicken, and a crab stuffed poblano peppers alis the best advertised meal and appetizer ... delicious!!!! It truly is crisp chicken I've had in years. As a military member who've tried "different" ways of eating chicken , i must say this would be my all go to no holds barred menu item. I would come back in a heartbeat for seconds and thirds. Truly the best dinner I've had and trust me I've had a lot. Enjoy ! Came back to have a few drinks after hours, I am pressed this guy's shift was over at 8pm yet he stayed keeping us company and no way felt rushed to leave... I'm glad we listened to some locals and came to eat at the Red Geranium bar for dinner! It did not disappoint. I had written off the whole ordeal based on thorough review of the Yelp reviews since we were only in town one night, but the locals explained that the fluctuating reviews were in part due to numerous chef changes under previous management. Our waiter/bartender David did a great job attending to our needs without being overbearing - something that would be easy to do given the cozy nature of the bar. It's separate from the rest of the seating for the restaurant and was nice and quiet. I had the fish and chips and my partner had the shrimp creole special - we liked all of it! Pricing was middle of the road - $14.99 for the special. The house margarita I had was delicious! The primary complaint I have is the beer. My beer was 2 years old and my partner's was over a year. I gave it a pass as I got the impression that my Stout loving ways are not the norm there but was shocked when the bill came and it was $11! We would definitely come back but I'll be a little more inquisitive about pricing and freshness and I suggest you do the same! read more

It is difficult to describe the level of excellence that the venerable Red Geranium Restaurant exudes. We recently chose to eat three consecutive meals at the RG during our getaway to New Harmony. The steaks, seafood, soups, pastas, and breakfasts were nothing short of fantastic. The breakfast chimichanga and the bacon wrapped filet were standout dishes that we strongly recommend. The Old Fashions were marvelous. My Bloody Mary was perfectly spiced & garnished beautifully. This being said, fine cuisine isn't the only thing the RG has going as the staff is second to none. We had the pleasure of dining with associates Summer, Hannah, and David. These associates are at the top of their game, providing expert professional service at every turn. Furthermore, after just a few meals at the RG, we consider these associates not only to be expert professionals, but also friends. The staff is an integral part of the establishment & the community. Their kindness and generosity is unmatched. Do yourself a favor and visit The Red Geranium when you are in the area. You will be quite pleased with this fine restaurant. p.s. First off, the layout is very awkward. You walk in and aren't really sure where to go. No one greets you. Staff isn't very friendly. Food is very overpriced for how little you get. Served rolls & butter as an appetizer, and the rolls were microwaved. I'm talking weird tasting, chewy pre-frozen rolls. Bourbon BBQ Chicken was very fatty. Served with disgusting, cold mac n' cheese and 5 pieces of boiled broccoli. Boyfriend got 1/2 rack of lamb (tasted wonderful). It was served with watered down, mushy mashed potatoes and 5 pieces of boiled broccoli. The best part of my experience was the pink lemonade. To sum it all up, it's a small town low-quality restaurant trying to be like a fine dining establishment. Would not recommend. read more

Disappointing. Despite being almost empty, service was somewhat disorganized and slow. Took awhile to get the rolls and butter; rolls were a little warm but run of the mill, and although the herb butter was tasty, it was hard as a rock. The main course was tasty enough but it seemed like the crab cakes were only in the pan long enough to get a sear, inside was still kind of a mush. The little potatoes were good. The "haricots verts" turned out to be regular green beans that managed to be under done and charred at the same time and were devoid of any seasoning . This place has really improved. Often times in movies and books *the dead rising from their graves* is a bad thing. Of course, I don't care what anyone says-- death is bad. It's not a new beginning. It is The End. Reanimating a corpse doesn't bring your beloved back. It just draws out the decay. Except Jesus. I had lost faith in The Red G years ago. Maybe I didn't give it a fair chance. But, my wife and I went back there for our anniversary in September. Mostly because it was close. We have a pretty nice tent up in the park where where the DNR and public don't go-- on account of the murder of those twins a few years back. But we were so glad we revisited it. We had a great dining experience. The restaurant was not busy on a Wednesday evening in March. There are 3 dining areas with very different decor. We were seated in the main room which is elegant but slightly rustic. White table cloths and a fireplace set the scene with wooded views out the windows. There is another area that is more contemporary that is beautiful with glass from floor to ceiling. Service and food were excellent. I had a salad with goat cheese, candied pecans and hot bacon dressing and it was amazing! Hubby had the lobster bisque and it was quite good. Steaks were wonderful and cooked just right. Sides of whipped potatoes and zucchini spirals were plentiful and tasty. We could not be happier with our experience at this beautiful gem in such a unique town. read more

I was drawn to the Chicken Cordon Bleu with asparagus. I was pleasantly pleased and utterly surprised with the amazing taste of the sauce and the beautiful presentation of the entree. This dish was like no other Chicken Cordon Bleu, it is created with chicken drumsticks instead of chicken breast. The sauce was paired so well with the dark chicken meat and the asparagus. This was by far the best Chicken Cordon Bleu I've ever had. My compliments to the chef. The cheesecake was awesome and the sauce really set off the desert. read more

We chose the cute patio since the weather was beautiful. It was very relaxing, with a quiet fountain and views of nature. I had grilled salmon which was excellent and my husband had NY strip. Plates looked beautiful and food was delicious. Pretty good wine selection. Server took care of our needs without being overly intrusive.
