This was the best and spiciest curry I found in Edinburgh…read more It was also had the single best restaurant decor I have EVER seen. The place is literally family-run and they're some of the most hospitable and friendly people in the world. I went on a curry tour of Edinburgh while I was on holiday. I've eaten curry on three continents now and, back home, I like to get my Indian take-away and add both habaneros and ghost pepper hot sauce to it before I eat it. Curry, and especially spicy curry, is very much an essential part of my life. So I picked a new Indian joint each night while I was in the city in an attempt to find it. The Kismot Killer wasn't available at the time I showed up but I was advised by my waiter (one of the coolest, most welcoming guys I've ever met) it's so spicy that it takes away from the actual FLAVOR of the curry, anyway. Let's be honest, there's a point when spicy becomes less about flavor and enjoyment than pure ego. So I got the next spiciest curry on the menu - Vegetable Naga - and asked for IT extra spicy, with rice and chapati. The food was EXCELLENT. The dish, even without modification, was ACTUALLY a fair amount spicy - which, if I can taste a bit of spice, most people probably shouldn't eat it - and the flavors were SO vivid and pleasant. I would've preferred it spicier by a bit but that's okay, it was still the spiciest curry I was able to find in the city and definitely my favourite. Next time I go to Edinburgh I shall be visiting again.

Really not great. I would probably go as to far to say the worst Indian restaurant I have ever…read moreeaten at, and I have been to some truly horrendous ones! I came here last month with a couple of friends, against our better judgement as it was completely empty at about 7 in the evening, but we still dined here. The food was really not tasty, I had onion bhaji's to start which were dry and tasteless, and my friends had a selection of kebabs which they said were chewy, and they really looked unappealing. The curries were equally awful. I had the chicken bhuna, which had a super watery sauce, and the chicken was really chewy and stringy, and there was a layer of oil on the whole thing making it taste rank to be honest. The rice was also over cooked and was pretty soggy. To their credit though, the nan bread was tasty was was the best part of the meal - but it would be pretty difficult to mess that up! The meal was really expensive too, with two courses coming to about £17 - really not worth it. I found the staff rude and unhelpful, and overall had a pretty nasty experience. Don't be fooled - just because a restaurant is on the Royal Mile does not mean it is good, I learnt the hard way!

The food was good and the service was quick. I am not giving them a 4-star rating cause the service could have been improved and the guy who greeted us could have been friendlier. My partner tried to use the Yelp checkin offer for 10% menu ( we both unlock and use Yelp offers which work pretty great) but the guy refused it by saying it is only on the takeout menu while as the offer says main menu which is what we ordered. We didn't argue but still as I mentioned before, the service could have been better and friendlier. Three star for the food.

Unfortunately, it doesn't quite deliver everything it promises. There's no denying that the décor is beautiful - the solid oak furniture and linen tablecloths certainly give the place an upmarket feel, but when main courses are around £10-15 without any rice or naans you would expect something more from the food than it actually delivers. That said, they offer a handful of set banquets for two people which work out at roughly £20 per head including starters right through to main courses, although my friends that I ate there with said that theirs was pretty bland and dull. I wouldn't go as far as saying it was a bad meal, but I haven't been in a mad rush to go back to Voujon since my first visit.

They serve traditional and authentic Indian dishes which are full of flavour. I have had a few of their curry dishes and my favourite is the King Prawn Bhuna which is very tasty and quite spicy but not too much that it ruins your meal. The dishes at Voujon are all very well presented and the foo is reasonably priced, with main meals around £9 and there is an extensive veggie menu available as well. They offer several different types of rice and there is plenty of variety of side dishes to accompany your meal. The decor inside is very authentic and modern whilst the staff have always been very attentive and warm. Voujon also do takeaways and is available for private functions.

There are white cloth tablecloths and the waiters are dressed somewhat formally. We were greeted and shown to our table. Our waiter came over immediately to take our drink order. We each ordered Kingfisher beers and they had that one on draft. The menu is multiple pages and very extensive. We ordered a lamb dish and a vegetarian dish. The food came in about 15 minutes. They used a hot plate to keep the main dishes warm. We both thought the lamb dish was excellent. However, my wife did not care for the vegetarian dish (I liked it). Overall, we had a good meal here and a good night out. However, we eat a lot of Indian food and my wife cooks great Indian food (she is Dutch not. Indian). This meal did not 'wow' us like the meals at some other Indian restaurants. We would definitely consider going back to this restaurant.

With all that said, Itihaas is outstanding and offers wonderful dishes that can satisfy both the curry lover and the curry "blah" guy like me, all wrapped in a package and bow of quality staff and very nice settings. I am impressed! I really enjoyed my Saktora Lamb and Bhindi along with very good Naan. The lamb was tender and full of flavor, the okra cooked to perfect texture and taste. Being no expert on Indian cuisine I cannot vouch for authenticity, but I certainly would very much recommend Itihaas for a good meal at a nice table!

Last Friday I went over to get some chicken tikka and the gentleman confirmed I was after this and not chicken tikka masala. I'm not big on sauces so minus the masala for me please. After about 10 min wait the takeaway was ready and I unloaded the goodies at home. A small addition of iceberg lettuce with yoghurt sauce came with the chicken - so good, lemony and refreshing. The chicken was very good too, big chunks of tender meat cooked nicely. I had that with some plain boiled rice. Simple but delicious. Happy with this takeaway and if Shapla would operate as a sit in resturant, I would probably have dinner there :)
