Used to love the huge roast dinners we had here in the past, but hadn't been back in quite awhile, so decided to pop in one afternoon. Made to feel welcome by the man serving & as it was getting a little late into the afternoon we asked if they were still serving food, to which we got a positive response and told 'we could order whatever we liked'! We only wanted sandwich's so placed our order for 3 BLTs and then enquired about wine. They only appear to stock one brand, so the only choice was do we want white, rose or red. We found this a little odd for such a large pub/restaurant. We opted for rose and sat in the front conservatory-type area that looks out onto the road.
The wine was truly awful and made us wince as soon as tried it. Bad choice. But it was when the food arrived that we were left literally speechless.. a roadside cafe could and no doubt would have done a better job! Firstly, we asked for brown & two white which was mixed up, but by now we were so hungry we just got started. My bread was quite stale and the filling was very sparse consisting of a few tiny bits of limp iceberg, one slice of tomato and a little bacon. And the crisps on the side were soft! It was your typical lacklustre sandwich that you would expect to see served in a naff diner from the 1970's!! Maybe they couldn't be bothered to open up a new bag of crisps or start some fresh bread as we were now the only eating customers left, but we are still paying customers!!
And then when we just finished our sandwich, the music that was playing in the background was switched off and the landlord walked past and made a comment about us 'lasting a good time' at our table. (at this point we had only been in the place about half an hour)We were a little unclear what he meant until the lights went out and and he made it quite clear he was shutting! We did ask when we first came in about service times etc.. why not tell us then they would be closing in half an hour? This made us feel very unwelcome.
Needless to say we will not be back. read more
