It was a warm June evening…read moreand, whilst there were no moorings available on the bank, we were able to tie up alongside another boat for the night. The outside tables were nearly full, but we found a seat, bought drinks and ordered our food. The gammon steaks were enormous, the beer was good and the service was friendly and efficient. A friendly place, we'll be back again.

The Ales are - well - if you are german - and from Bavaria / Franconia the beer is the only point you can criticise here (no foam and too warm... but hey). It was Winter - so we didn't have the idea to look behind the house where I recognised later that there must be something like a small beer garden. Anyhow. The Cape of Good Hope is the place I want to be again. Waiters/Waitress - friendly and nice - even to a hun. Food - great dishes. Served with a smile and utmost tasty Beer - (the tourist says "hey nice - an english Ale! - the Franconian/ Bavarian says "Naaaaaaa.....) ;-) Would I come here again? (I'm native franconian - and used to high quality beers (highest density of breweries in the world)... So I might have a clue about quality of beer.....) I would give it a try!

So starving that we…read morecouldn't help, but attack the bread the waitress brought to our table as soon as we were seated at Rose and Crown. Boy, that was good bread. For my meal I ordered the goat cheese sandwich, which came with a tomato, red pepper, and parsnip soup. The soup did the trick of warming me up right away! The goat cheese sandwich was just OK. I never thought I'd say this since I absolutely love goat cheese, but they overdid it on the cheese a bit. I think they used 10 goats to make this one sandwich. Someone else at the table was smart enough to order a side of fries (umm, I mean chips) so I put my sandwich aside and ate those instead. Others at the table munched on ravioli, ceasar salad, and mushroom risotto. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. I also liked that their coffee came with lots of sugar cubes (I ate 3 just on their own!) and smarties (one of my favorite candies). They may not know how to make a goat cheese sandwich at Rose & Crown, but they sure know how to serve a good cup of coffee!

Reasonable local ale for just £4.10 each. Shared the £7.50 Camembert with croute toast as an appetizer. It didn't last very long. Loved the Deli Plates tapas-style tasting menu concept. If I ever open a restaurant, I'm totally ripping off that idea! Loved the Poached Salmon with arugula and the Smoked Mackerel Pate. Nice ales and reasonable wine prices. Very pleasant and personable table service.

WOW, What a pleasant and wonderful surprise of a find. We happened to be going this way after car…read moreshopping and found this pub. It looked like Yelpers had enjoyed it so we hoped that it was going to be worth the stop. It was. A lot of the pubs I've found lately have all become commercialized and become a bit "cookie cutter." They have the same items on the menu, carry the same beers and generally almost start looking the same. Well, the Malt Shovel does not. Not only is their menu unique, it seemed to have specials of the day. I choose a meat pie that with beer in it and my husband chose a different meat and potatoes dish. We started with some fried tempura shrimp that was a surprise because it was just as light and tasty as could be. We ate that pretty quickly. The entrees are pretty hefty and I believe we could have shared, but in the end my husband liked his dish better so it worked out. Ironically we came here quite by accident but it was our anniversary that night and with trying to find a car hadn't had time to properly plan dinner but it worked out because the meal made it feel pretty special. I would have liked to have tried a dessert but having no space had to forgo. In the end it turned out it was less than 10 miles away from home so we probably will be back often for good homecooked like meals!

Now when you visit the countryside you don't really expect to find a bar as a city dweller might…read moreexpect it but No. 1 really was just that. Feeling a little swanky at it but still, cheaper than most of the traditional pubs surrounding it, a good area to get up and strut your stuff, and close enough the other aspects of "nightlife" in town (not to mention close to bed if you've opted for one of the travel lodges). No.1 felt like the perfect start to an active stratford night. Now i wouldn't normally review a place i had spent such a small amount of time in (without much of a yelp head on for it either - no food, no carefully laid tests for the staff). But one act from the staff compels me: We were walking into town, unsure where would be open, it was really very late. Two intimidating looking bouncers are stood outside No1 (as is their job). We pause across the road, wondering at a country bar that needs bouncers like that, i was about to walk on when they bellowed, "don't worry its nice in here, come on over!" Both with beaming smiles, one walked us in and pointed us to a good spot to sit and the other instructed my friend as to where to smoke (out the front it seemed was less windy that night). I was amazed, to be honest i'm used to bouncers being short tempered and sometimes pretty brash with you (thats just part of city life!). This is the first review i've penned where the security made a place worth visiting for me, well done guys!!
