Extensive menu with lots to choose from I've had the mushroom stroganoff and the scampi respectively on our visits the chips are chunky and deliciously cooked. Portion sizes are deceptively large so you'll have to be mindful when you order as the puddings are worth leaving room for. Being an expert on these things, I'd heartily recommend the chocolate and guinness cake over the chocolate fudge cake much richer and gooier without the sickly sweetness. I'm going to have to google the recipe Nicely decorated, friendly staff, clean loos and reasonably priced good quality food what more could you ask? What's that you say? An interesting back story into how the pub got its name? They've got that too you'll have to visit to find it out though : )

Just off the a6 near lyme park, the red lion pub catches the eye with its rural charm, modern look and lovely beer garden. The inside is well decorated, spacious tables and lots of nooks and crannies to sit in. The bar staff and restaurant staff are very friendly and always keen for a chat, and (so far) we have always turned up without booking and been seated instantly. Being a robinsons pub they have the standard robbies beers on tap including the new one voodoo dawn. They have a great selection of bottles and other things on tap too such as westons stowford press cider which will be lovely in the summer ! We went out on a mission this weekend to eat some fish, and originally considered mooching to australasia but in the end couldn't be bothered. We gambled on the red lion doing some decent fish dishes and we were not disappointed ! They had 3 seafood starters and 3 mains on the specials menu, including a couple of others on their regular menu so plenty to choose from ! We opted for the potted shrimp and scallops to start. Both were brilliant, the potted shrimp was fresh and buttery and the flavours really complimented each other. The scallops were cooked well and other half LOVED the parsnip purée. For the mains we had sea bass and cod, served with veg and mashed potatoes / crushed new potatoes with spinach. Firstly WOW the mash at this place is incredible. Both pieces of fish were cooked brilliantly and everything else on the plate was delicious. We were stuffed at the end and very satisfied with our meal ! We've never been let down here and will definitely be heading back ! Great selection of spirits and cocktails on offer too. Fab little place !

Even though it's been on our radar for a while, I was super excited to see that The Red Lion in Stockport was nominated and while not just around the corner from our house, it's still very close to one of our favourite walking destinations - Lyme Park. We went on a Sunday and my wife tucked into their delicious beef Sunday lunch, coming with all the trimmings including a large Yorkshire pudding, fresh gravy and an exciting array of Vegetables. I went for the fish and chips which was different class - pure light batter, homemade chips and excellent mushy peas. The prices at the Red Lion definitely are around the gastropub area - you're taking about everything costing over a tenner but for a Sunday lunch of such good quality you don't mind paying that much. They also have a great selection of real ales and quality craft beers on offer. If I'm in the area then I'd definitely go back, although I'm also a fan of the Rams Head down the road in Disley so I would probably alternate between the two if it was a regular venture out. I'd say that it's really worth the nomination for MFDF and good to see that restaurants and pubs outside of the city centre are getting more and more recognition.

After a pint of Banks' Sunbeam (and one of Marston's Long Hop for the lady!), we chose our table and scanned the menu. This was our first mistake as it is so comprehensive, one takes ages to read through everything, yet there is a Specials board with another twelve or so choices on it! The service is extremely good and welcoming and the food can only be described as superb. Best of all for us is the policy they have of, when two people order main meals, the cheapest one comes free! As a consequence we had two wonderfully prepared and served meals for less than £10. Best of all from my point of view is that it is so easy to get to by Warrington bus, enabling me to enjoy the beer properly. The entire pub, and its toilets, were scrupulously clean and good to be in.

My 4 year old daughter fell asleep at the table, the staff were really nice when we asked if we could move to a bench table so she could lay down instead of sitting up and resting her head on her arms. They didn't even bat an eyelid when we didn't order food for her - she nodded off almost as soon as we got in there and remained asleep throughout. The food did take quite a while to arrive given that it wasn't overly busy - I've been in Marsdens pubs before and received food much quicker on busier days - but when it did arrive it was expertly cooked and very filling. My only criticism of the Peacock is that it doesn't do a Carvery, which is something you'd expect in a place like this.

It is everything you'd expect from a pub which makes it's stock and trade in tourism. Nearly everyone in the pub was a walker or at least a tourist coming to enjoy the beautiful Edale Valley and it oozes that familial feel of a shared interest even though you are amongst a group of strangers. The pub is exceedingly warm and cosy with one side dedicated to eating in three rooms. There is also a large beer garden out the front of the pub which is lovely in the Summer sun, though was not heavily used on this cold Winter day. They also have accommodation upstairs for walkers who have an entire weekend of activities planned. They have a nice selection of cask beer (quite a few from Bradfield Brewery which being only 16 miles away is probably the most local) and the expected keg beers though I won't grace them with acknowledging any in particular. There was a large number of us booked in for a late lunch. I would suggest booking ahead especially on the weekend if you are a sizeable group. I ordered the Roast Beef. A large meal arrived and was devoured with gusto. I wouldn't say it was the best roast I've had but it was exactly what you would expect from a local country pub and filled you with a hearty warm feeling after a cold day on the hills. They were also exceptionally fats in delivering food to about 20 people. All ordered and received their meals within about 30 minutes. I was rather astonished by the speed, but then reminded myself that they do this sort of brisk trade week after week.
