Popped in on the way back from a cold day out at Alton Towers…read more We got a lovely warm welcome, were quickly seated near a roaring fireplace and settled in for a great meal accompanied by some very well kept Hartington IPA. The pub is cosy and friendly, and in a great location for walkers and cyclists on the Tissington trail. We'll definately be heading back soon (to the Royal Oak not Alton Towers, which is another story)!

We were only stopping through for a couple of days, but still managed to pack in an afternoon of ales, cider and pool at The Cock and Pullet pub. It's a charming little pub chock full of classic English heritage. The staff were lovely and accommodating and the selection of ales, ciders and beers were most superb. If you find yourself up in this beautiful neck of the woods (it's literally right in the middle of the picturesque Peak District),I'd highly recommend that you stop in for a Tipple!

Super tasty quality food, I noticed that on the menu it even tells you which farm the meat came from, or where the ice cream was made etc. The Greek Lamb and the Gammon are both brilliant. The portions are huge and I'm always left with enough food for another meal but save room for the Holly Bush sundae because you wont ever have a such a selection of tasty locally made ice cream :) The prices are great too, last time I went it was around 30quid for the 2 of us.

I'm still not sure whether it's table service or order at the bar, but I think it's the former! Beer was well kept and we a nice bitter shandy made with a golden ale. Oddly there were four pales and the one golden on - no amber, porter etc. Would be nice to see some darker ales on offer. There was a bottled stout which I bought to take away (was on a shelf in pub, not behind bar, but I think you can probably drink it on premises away) but it was really bad and I had to pour it away. Stick to the taps! Very cosy multi-roomed layout, with a fire blazing in one room. Also very dog-friendly. Landlord very friendly and helpful.

This was our planned lunch stop on a walk on 27 December, it had taken us 45 minutes longer to get there than we anticipated due to the snow and icy conditions underfoot. Arriving at the opposite end of Litton we took a walk through to get to the Red Lion - on the outside it looks a typical country pub, and the interior too, however it lacked the usual naff and tacky bits that so often ruin pubs. The staff gave us a greeting that you would normally associate with far grander venues, and our order was efficiently taken. The food arrived shortly after and i was bowled over. I opted for the veggie sausages and mash. The sausage were cooked to perfection, the mash was amazing, the onion gravy delicious, and the vegetables that arrived with it were also cooked to perfection. The meals of my co-walkers also looked to be of a similar quality. There was a good choice of real ales on, and they had obviously been selected with walkers in mind - as 2 of them were very light and refreshing. All in all it was an amazing visit, and i would not hesitate to make the trek back there again.

The landlord is usually to be found drinking a bowl of tea in the bar by the fire with his whippets and reading the Telegraph. I wish it was my local great way to spend a Saturday lunchtime in the middle of a days walking! Be warned though it doesn't suit everyone though for the life of me don't know why!!
