The Abbey Inn used to be one of the best places to eat and drink in the Staffs Moorlands area. Having visited the pub on a recent warm Saturday afternoon I was at first surprised by how few customers were present, until, having eaten the food, it became apparent.
Whilst the staff (and the beer) were innocuous, the same could not be said for the vegetarian meal that I was served. I do appreciate that the Abbey is definitely at the budget end of the catering market, but the item that was produced was too obviously from the cheapest area of the freezer. The chips looked delicious! Unfortunately their look was the only thing delicious about them. The lack of taste (in the chips) sggests that these also were from a very cut-price supplier. The veg/salad obviously also made a deep impression on me as I cannot even remember what was served.
Most of the other clients in the pub were elderly. I can only presume that (if they eat here regularly) their taste buds are fading, or they have a misguided loyalty to the establishment. read more
