Stopped into Proletariat in Galveston during a family day at Dickens on the Strand, and it ended up being a great spot to take a break from the festival. The place had a lively, cozy vibe that fit the day perfectly. I ordered a unique craft beer from Charleston, SC, which was such a cool find on tap in Galveston. My family tried the boozy hot chocolate, wine, and a couple of drinks from their solid coffee selection. The staff was friendly and kept things moving smoothly even with the festival crowd. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5--is the limited snack options. It would've been nice to pair the drinks with a few more bites, especially during such a busy event. Overall, though, Proletariat is definitely worth a stop if you're exploring the Strand. Great drinks, great vibe, and a perfect little retreat during Dickens on the Strand. read more

Been coming here since I moved to Galveston in 2019. It's a fantastic place that is really a big part of my Galveston experience. I frequent the place as a place to study. They have both coffee and lots of alcoholic drinks. It's especially a nice place to study on a weekend night when all I want to do is hang with my friends instead. So to keep things spicy, I usually will get a draft beer on a slow Saturday night. The only reason I take a star is because their wifi isn't always the most reliable. This place is also perfect for a hang out with friends or when family come into town. Pro has art exhibits year round that changes about once a month from amazing local artists. If you're in the Galveston (close to The Strand) area and are craving craft beer, coffee, pizza or all of those things - stop by The Proletariat. We visited during Mardi Gras weekend and helped ourselves to a couple beer flights ($6.50 each), a couple slices a pizza - and a coffee for our momma. They have about 15 craft beers on tap, and then a variety of standard brews (dos equis, Miller, etc). The venue is open and bright and you can people watch from the inside, or enjoy some games or live entertainment from the stage. Prices are reasonable, there is ample seating & service is wonderful (shout out to Amber). I'd definitely stop by again next time I'm in town. read more

Okayyy GREAT beer selection but on top of that super funky vibe with extremely talented local artists posted on their walls. Sometimes I walk into bars and cafes and see local art and no offense but I hit the snooze button. But the art displayed here is so unique and out of the box I wanted to purchase all of it and have it shipped home for me. They had interactive art displays, several mediums displayed and so intricate. It appears they have artists displayed for a certain length of rotation before swapping them out, the common theme for the ones we saw today were "quarantine art" Overall staff was friendly and atmosphere was cool, eclectic and spunky. read more

It's a lot like a coffee café - but better! They have a great selection of beer and wine (no liquor), and one of my favorite aspects is that they feature a different local artist all the time on their walls. It's cozy and cute. My only issue that I've experienced twice now, is that the bartenders tend to disappear for too long at a time. I've left after waiting too long for them to return once, and the other night I was so close to shouting for them because I desperately needed the bathroom code! The Proletariat is an interesting place. Part bar/part coffee shop/part art gallery. I had some time to kill in Galveston before a Yelp Elite event so I stopped by for a drink, laptop in tow. Since The Proletariat is on The Strand, your best bet is finding parking on the street. There's a small bar where you place your order, whether alcoholic or non-alcoholic. Happy hour was going on when I was there so I had one of their cocktails on special for $4. And it was an interesting one at that! White peach sangria and topo chico in a champagne flute. It wasn't my favorite but I appreciated the creativity. They also have a limited menu if you're hungry, snacks and pizza by the slice. They have free WiFi and plenty of seating. This place is a cross between a local hometown coffee shop & your favorite local bar. Service from our bartender Sarah was amazing, she was fun and a wealth of information. Dozens of beers, wine, sake, sours & mead. We had the pizza, which was very good "tavern" slices. We felt right at home as soon as we sat down. Lots of cool art & great vibes. My sister drove me and my niece out to the Galveston piers and beach area one night while visiting in the Houston area. We strolled around and stopped in here for a drink. Her wine and me beer. The child - tea. This place is more unique in that they have pretty much an entire art exhibit going on on their walls. The pieces are all up for sale as well and imagine rotate out as people purchase items. They also serve coffee, interesting non alcoholic beverages and pizza by the slice. Our bartender was pretty cool and I think amused that we had a kid in tow asking for fancy pressed tea and he gave her a pen that had an attachable fan thing. I personally was impressed as hell with their draft and bottle menu. I know my sister doesn't love bars that much and knew we weren't staying for incredibly long so I ordered the one that I couldn't live without 'Ridiculous AF Saloon Door Brewing's Peanut Butter and Chocolate Milk Stout'. You know it was so GOOD! They also have a rather large collection of board games. We found something called 'The worst case scenario survival board game' and it was really amusing. One of my favorite coffee shops on the island. They're dog friendly so that's a definite plus! The coffee is some of the best I've had. No matter which one I order, but my favorite is their take on a cortado... I forget the name. All their specialty coffees come with a small biscotti which is a nice treat for the sweet tooth. They always have really cool, funky local art displayed for auction or purchase too. The baristas making your coffee may just be the creator of the art in the wall. This was my second time here. Came in with some friends to check it out. I love love the fact that they have multiple types of seating. You like to sit at the bar? They have you covered. At a table? Well this place is Non Galveston style... which is a good thing in this case. Architectural space, art and artsy with concrete floors and halogen lighting, the open space makes a splash. Then there is the beer, the beer is also a fantastic splash of craftyness with hints of... well you get the picture.... yummy. Now on to the service... it's great but the server I like... is the Beer Maven named SAM! Yes I said Maven, Samantha (don't call her that) serves everyone with a super cute smile, a chirpy young voice and a refreshing style of personality that goes down well with any brew. More over she rocks and studies "marine biology" which she will is about to be a grad of as of this writing and (soon) to be released into the wild.... Everything is reasonable priced as well. On top of the good drinks, there's really cool art on the walls. It's like half bar and half gallery. Every other Tuesday they hold Coast 2 Soul, which is a very inclusive poetry slam. It's free, and anyone who signs up can perform.
