Most ballet studios only reward tweens and early teens who have small bones, long legs, flexibility, nicely arched feet, small heads, tapering fingers, and parents that can pay for them to come 1-2 times a day, 6 days a week. Not so at Dance West. Mike & Monique, the owners, are serious about ballet and yet they temper it with the understanding that only 1% of their tweens and teens wants to be a professional dancer and that all of their adult dancers dance because they love it. They make ballet fun and hire teachers for tap, jazz, and hip hop that keep that attitude of fun. This is the least snooty dance studio I've been to, and I've been to A LOT of dance studios. Back when it was in Seal Beach, the class schedule & studio brochure used to note that eating disorders were not tolerated. Only by eating a healthy diet and healthy meals would dancers become strong enough to meet the demands of dance, it said. The connected company, Metropolitan Ballet Company, has won choreographic and performance awards in Europe on several occasions.

We had 2 assemblies with pre-K through 5th grade. I stayed for both and couldn't believe 1 person could keep such a large crowd captive, laughing and engaged. The little ones (4 yrs) all the way to the noon aides, lunch lady , principal and teachers. I found myself cheering, clapping and amazed too. He changed the assembly slightly for the upper graders, had their attention the whole time. The magic tricks & games reinforces the core lessons. As an adult I had a hard time explaining to my kids the difference between "tattling" and "telling", John's assembly made it very easy for the children to understand. I loved the fact he gets the teachers to take part in the fun, students were going crazy seeing their teachers up on stage lending a hand. Some teachers came up to me later to let me know of John's other assemblies so that we can get him back. We also had scheduling snafus and little things that may have interrupted his show but he didn't miss a beat and was able to comedically keep the show on track. He really fine tuned the art of positive crowd control which the staff really appreciated. Somehow he was able to excite the students in a laughing frenzy and send them off in a calm way all while helping the children say no to bullying! This is the way to kick off or end a no bullying campaign at your school! It's going to be by far the most powerful and efficient way to get the message across and more importantly , MAKE IT STICK! We had struggled to find anything age-appropriate that wasn't just debate prep for kids or Toastmasters for adults, so discovering their tween and teen improv workshops felt like a huge win. Since then, all four of my kids have gone through their programs: Tween, Teen, and most recently the Littlest Lil Crazies for my younger daughters, which is their newest class. Cherie, the owner, is amazing. She has been nothing but patient and professional with our kids and she has done wonders in bringing them out of their shells on stage! The growth we've seen in our kids over the years has been truly incredible. Beyond the obvious fun stuff like stage presence, comedic timing, and vocal projection, they've built real confidence in public speaking and have truly learned to think on their feet. My oldest is now a high school freshman and still talks about the OC Crazies workshops as some of the best classes he's taken, he says he uses the skills he learned there often, both in class and in his extracurriculars.

I am so happy my first experience was with OC crazies. Cherie, our instructor, was just excellent. She had plans for each class but at the same time was great at adapting to what was happening in the room. I am a university professor and in my opinion the hardest thing for being a good instructor is finding the right level of challenge for the class. Cherie found that balance so masterfully. Even though there were a wide range of skills in the room, I think everyone ended up having a lot of fun. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun each session too. The graduation show was my absolute favorite. My wife and a few of my friends got to watch me being all loose and crazy. It was just fantastic. A few of my friends also became interested to enroll after just watching the graduation show. I know the reason that I like the graduation show so much. In the academic world we call such an ending to a program a "culminating experience." It's supposed to get the students to experience the so what of everything you did during the program. I think the graduation show did just that. I think what allowed us to be able to do a show after just six week of training was that Cherie does most of her teaching during actual improvisation exercises. During her classes, you are mostly on stage doing an improve act or watching your classmate attempt it. Seeing them succeed or make mistakes are also great way to continue learning. I had so much fun that I think this was the highlight of my 2023 and I am planning to redo the same class as I think I can still improve and also because it's just so much fun.

To her the classes are fun and a way to gain knowledge of game specifics, but to me, the parent, they are so much more! With guidance from her Gamerunner teacher Edward, she's learned how to: strategize, which carries over into tackling assignments in high school and college classes; deal with group dynamics, which is helpful for class and work place projects AND real world situations; expand her creative side through developing characters for each campaign, which has significantly increased her writing skills; and be flexible, cooperate, and problem solve quickly without losing her patience or necessary healing potion, which just might save her or a party member's life some day. ;) Most importantly (to me) my daughter has overcome her social anxiety without pressure or prejudice through taking classes at Gamerunner.
