My roast chicken was ok but the accompanying sides were like a sub par thanksgiving dinner. The Young's ale was pretty good though. My wife's rump roast was tough in spots. This is not a gastropub so I don't feel I can give it the full 5 stars but it is comfortable, inviting and friendly. Staff are friendly and the place and bathrooms are clean and hygienic. The choice of beers, ales and ciders is good and I enjoyed my food selections. The standard menu looked pretty good but I selected off the daily specials and had 3 tasty venison sausages with triple fried chips and gravy on the side. Good English fare with a tiny amount of Rocket greens to kid me into thinking I am eating a tiny bit healthy! (Not!!). Good deal at £12.50 Decided to be really bad and have a blackberry and apple crumble with custard (also super english right?!?). £6. Excellent upscale pub fare! Just what I was craving after a few days of fried food and a good but heavy Sunday supper the night before. Group of three, stopped in after visiting the DaVinci exhibit in the Queens Gallery. Beers were cold and satisfying, and the bartender made a good Old Fashioned cocktail as well. Foodwise, the chicken liver terrine was a great way to start. Two of us had specials of the day--I had to try the vegetable Wellington with squash and mushrooms and it was everything I was craving (ie, lots of vegetables and not too rich.) It was served with very well cooked beets and potatoes and gravy on the side. We also had one of the other specials, a fish pie with mash and broccoli, that was equally excellent (and very filling). Other member of our group stuck with the grilled asparagus side and mushroom tart appetizer and was equally satisfied. All in all we were very happy to find this place for the elevated British menu and good drinks. It was nice to leave feeling well satisfied but not weighed down. read more

This place was surprisingly good. It's pretty spacious inside with lots of seating and open space. Service was super friendly but not that attentive. Plenty of options on tap for both beer and cider. The food was the really pleasant surprise though. I'd been craving some authentic bangers and mash and these were delicious. Venison sausages with just the right amount of spice, velvety smooth mashed potatoes and a flavorful gravy to top it off. This is a great little gem in the city. read more

I was really looking forward to a nice Sunday dinner here; the atmosphere was warm and convivial, the beer was excellent, and the service better than I expected in such a popular pub. Regrettably, the roast chicken I ordered was absurdly dry, notwithstanding the delicious gravy. The duck fat potatoes were a true highlight, and the Yorkshire puddings could not be improved. We found this place after a cop at Buckingham palace recommended it. We are so grateful that he did! Two out of three of us order the cheeseburger with fries. This hands-down was the best burger I have ever eaten. Every part of the burger was delightful from the bread to the cheese which tasted like your cream. I don't think I've ever finished an entire burger in one sitting, will this one I did! The ambience reminds me of a French coffee shop, or old-school home converted into a restaurant. This was a nice pub one Saturday afternoon to grab a pint of London ale and get a nice portion of fish-n-chips. They open at 12:30 PM. I admit I had to look at the menu to see what the green stuff was that I was eating. It was mushed peas. Us yanks don't get that side dish often in the states. In fact, I don't think I've ever had it before. We don't get our beer served at room temperature either but the London ale wasn't bad at all. I wouldn't hesitate to order it next time. Inside there is a huge bar, some tables, and a nice small patio outside in the back. Like the others have said, it's location is nice because it's a short walk from Buckingham Palace, but you probably wouldn't find it unless someone told you about it. I can't give 'em 5 stars because after waiting an eternity I had get up from my chair to ask for my check. This was after my waitress pulled a disappearing act. Just around the corner from where I was working for the day and had dropped in for a drink a few months back. I didn't get a chance to eat here but there was a bustling trade on food. They have a good beer selection with some cask ale offering and craft beer on tap. Staff very friendly and service was also good. Worth a stop if you are in the area and its close to the Palace and Victoria station etc. read more

I have nothing but good things to say about The Phoenix. We recently had our company Christmas party here and it was absolutely fantastic. Having never been before and given the task of booking a place near Hyde Park (new to the job and the city), I was a bit worried about how it would be. The room we reserved was awesome. Upstairs, away from the noisy crowd at the bar downstairs, with a huge dining table and a nice Christmas tree in the corner. We were waited on hand and foot. The food was delish. The good news about the Phoenix is it's the best pub in the area for food. The bad news is this is somewhat akin to saying that Whitechapel is the best place to get yourself murdered if you've a penchant for ghoulish crepuscular wanderings. Victoria is not an area gastronomically blessed lets face it and given the limitations of getting something edible at all the Phoenix suddenly takes on a rather better lustre than if it had been in say Shoreditch or Islington. On to the review. The food is rather hit and miss, but then friday lunch times can get very busy. The burgers are decent but vary between too pink and too burnt, a honeyed duck was sickly but I've had a lovely venison stew there. Beer is excellent with a guest ale or two usually present and lagers crisp and clean. Try and get the French waitress downstairs (not a euphemism), she's quick and charming, but there is a comedy value with some of the other waiting staff who specialise in a school of service that fits somewhere in between surly and rude; I personally think it's part of the reason I keep going back. read more

Went here for a few pints on a Thursday night. Sadly, the beers were as flat as tap water. We tried a few different types too - all absolutely flat. Bar staff offered us another - but what is the point if they're all as flat as each other? Avoid this, there's a dozen other pubs within a few minutes walk. What a shame! The place is very nice. Central, right round the corner from Buckingham palace, near to everything. But come on people! It is easter monday and tourists are around! No burgers at all! Every course was with lamb (none in my family eats lamb) If you want something that is not lamb there is a vegetarian pie, some starters and an hamburger...but sadly no hamburger for us today as they had finished them already as it is Monday. WTF? Very bad! At leas the beer we took was nice... I don't think i will go there again to give them another chance! It has been so disappointing! I can only speak for the bar bit, which was indeed perfectly alright. Nothing more than that though. The location is its main selling point - e.g not a wealth of perfectly alright bars round here. An uninspiring but ok range of beer and cider on tap Modern, young professional decor including big photographic prints of peppers and tomatoes. When I went there with a group at 9pm on a weekday, the place was full of people around my age (25-30) who evidently earn a lot more than me and bother to iron their clothes. The ambience was fine and service was good, but I promised my sister a good gastropub experience...and the food was not good. Most of the items were unavailable so we got the salmon, beef and vegetable stew. All were really disapointing. The beef was really bad -- barely edible and the waiter was nice enough to remove it from the bill but i really dont think i can come back remembering the fishy salmon, the wierd stew, and the unedible beef. read more

The Phoenix has been revamped in recent months, with its existing retro interior boosted by a much-improved beer list. But service is still poor, and it can take 20 minutes to finally get a drink. I haven't eaten here, so can't comment on the food. Instead, my experience of the Phoenix has been one of occasional venue for works drinks. And it's always been a consistent one. Firstly, it tends to get swamped by workers from the surrounding offices. That tends to mean standing room only. Perhaps more crucially though, it means it can take ages to get a drink. Recently my colleagues and I stopped by earlier in an attempt to beat the crowds. This we successfully did, but unfortunately the Phoenix had duly reduced the staff behind the bar, meaning service was just as slow. The quality of the service can be somewhat dopey too - on the same night I saw someone complaining that whiskey had been added to a drink instead of vodka, while on another night I had to yell to stop one of the bar staff from adding ice (??!!) to my stout. The Phoenix has improved its beer list, which is definitely an improvement from the Youngs-centric selection it had before. That, plus the pleasant interior just about secure it a 3 stars from me. A nice way to end a trip to the palace! Took my mom here for lunch after we finished a trip to the State Rooms. The decor is charming, the food (we both got the fish and chips) was good and the service was friendly and attentive. I would recommend this place to friends and family in the future and will likely be heading back! read more
