I had a craving for dim sum and I'm vegan, so I was thrilled to see that the peterboro had a mushroom dumpling appetizer and chose it for our last date spot of 2025. We made a reservation for 4pm on New Year's Eve, drove thru the snow, easily found street parking (and it was free because it was a holiday!) walked around the corner through the falling snow and found our way inside the peterboro where we were promptly greeted and seated. Our server made her way over bearing water and service was on point all night. Not to mention the really cool ambiance. Red accent lanterns, tiger wall art, black tables and booths. We were one of two tables when we got there but the place started to fill up pretty quickly. We had the jade and the shaolin temple to drink from the NWA menu, both tasty. Jade was sweeter while shaolin had more of a sour kick. My spouse adored the fried chicken bao buns, and his sesame chicken was good but the house hot sauce took it to amazing level. I had the sesame tofu, which was just ok in my opinion. Pieces were small cubes and heavily done, I think if they did bigger chunks the tofu would sing more, or if there was a braised option of tofu that would be cool. But oh. My. Goodness... the mushroom dumplings were incredible. A good size, tasty savory with just a bit of heat and topped with more mushroom. I would definitely order them again. I think we'll go back soon and I'll try the rest of the vegan small plates, but skip the entree. Thanks for a lovely end to 2025, peterboro!

I had to update my review specifically to rave about the crab rangoon. They are perfectly fried and savory - they taste homemade and fresh. And the sauce is top tier. Homemade spicy sweet chili sauce; yum! they're super addictive.

Oh Peterboro...you were soooo good to me! Everything I had was delicious. Some things aren't pictured because I forgot about the camera and focused on the delectable food. The cucumber salad is wonderful as well. We had a great time with great service! The food came out fast & hot! Nice vibrant colors for the decor around the restaurant. With really good vibes! Every thing is shareable, so grab a friend, order a bunch of dishes, split the food & the bill, and leave full and happy!

Amazing Chinese restaurant in Detroit's Chinatown featuring excellent lo mein / garlic noodles and appetizers like the mushroom dumplings and desserts like the Chinese apple crisp. Lucy the server was also exceptional and I was able to find out more about Vincent Chin and the mural that was once up near here. The inside is also relatively spacious and they also have a very cool bar plus interior decorations (like a tiger mural). Highly recommended!

We've been 3 times now and leave full, happy, and with leftovers every time! The chicken fried bao is a consistent staple for us. The service is great, cocktails are phenomenal and unique, and the atmosphere is cozy and cool. Priced well for how much food you get- at least for 2 sharing small and big plates. We will be back again and again

Easy access, close free parking, fun ambiance. This is one of my pet peeves- staff that is not properly trained on serving and/or the menu. It's an easy fix - have them try the dishes, tell them what's in it, something unique about it. Advise them on tasty drink pairings. Food was presented nicely, tasted good, but I'm more is a spice girl. I need zippy flavors. The sesame chicken seemed bland to me. My partner loved the tofu. If you want safe, good food then you'll enjoy it.

What an amazing place. So glad to see rejuvenation to the old plot of Detroits china town off peterboro st. And Cass ave. Plenty of street parking and paid parking lot next door if needed. The decor is wonderful, fun, and inviting. So much spectacle to lay your eyes on. Statutes. Chineses lanterns. Murals. Paintings. A wonderfully lit establishment with something in every nook and cranny. Loved it. The food was just as great. We had for appetizers the crab Rangoon (with actual crab!) and the the mushroom dumplings with shiitake broth. The Rangoons were great, very crispy and stuffed full. The chili plum sauce was a great addition. The broth was a wonderful compliment to the dumplings which had an earthy savory flavor and was full of scallions and shiitake mushrooms. For our mains my partner had the beef and broccoli and I had the lo mien with shrimp. I was expecting a couple larger shrimp, but was not disappointed with plenty of small ones. My dish was flavorful and fresh and the added veggies via peppers onions and pea-pods was great. (They did say snow peas, not pea pods on the menu, but thats minor) it was excellent. The smoky flavor profile combined with the fresh veg and rustic homemade noodles made for a succulent Chinese meal. My partner got the beef and broccoli with jasmine rice and the beef was plentiful with a sesame oil garnish that gave a wonderful nutty flavor and the broccoli was cooked to perfection with just the right amount of crisp. The provided jasmine rice was great too. All wonderfully portioned. For drinks we each started with a thai tiger lager. so good, i dont undestand why more places dont carry it. My favorite beer. We finished with a hibiscus infused cocktail for her and a dragonfruit soda for me. The cocktail was tasty and strong and my dragonfruit soda was delicious and came in a cute tiki glass with a heart shaped straw. We each had a nice buzz. Our server Jo was excellent. She was attentive, thoughtful, conversational, and hustled to take care of all of her tables without delay, while still making us feel special. Wonderful person. Great decor, great food, great service. What more can I say.

I always hear about the peterboro but this was my first time dining in. I loved the menu and had a hard time deciding on what I want. I ended up getting the crispy eggplant and it was delicious. I would definitely recommend especially if you like black beans because the eggplant has a black bean sauce on it. The service was great. Food was out fast. Drinks were great. Everything was clean. I'll definitely be stopping in again.

Great place for date night or to grab drinks. Appetizers were phenomenal. They were fresh and well presented. Service was a bit slow but after receiving the food we figured it was worth the wait. We ordered the following items listed below and I'll rate them: Fried chicken bao buns: 10/10 Cheeseburger egg rolls: 7/10 Chicken wonton: 9/10 Fun chow noodle: 0 they had no flavor and I ended up sending the dish back Chicken fried rice: 7/10 Beef fried rice 7/10 Overall I think next time I'll probably just stick to drinks and appetizers. Parking is 10 dollars right next door. Incase you can't find street parking.

Stopped in for dinner on a Thursday night. It is a cute atmosphere the waitress recommended the Cheeseburger Spring rolls and they were unbelievable so good! I would go back just for these alone. She also recommended the spare ribs which we so much food. The food and beer was great, it's easy parking, all around nice place for dinner

Nate and I stopped in on our most recent visit to Detroit and had a lovely experience. The space is tucked away but had a surprising amount of outdoor space--we were there in January but I'd love to come back in the summer. We were greeted right away and given a spot near the bar. The menu includes cocktails, lots of wine, and several tasty food options. It was quite busy inside, so it took a bit of time for our server to come over to us, but we weren't in a rush. They had ten cocktails on their list and I tried the bullet proof soul and Nate got the negroni alla perra. The ingredients list for some of the cocktails include things I've never heard of, but at a place like this, I just know it's going to be good. Our drinks were perfectly balanced and very tasty. We also ordered the mortadella sandwich to split--this was delicious. It was pretty messy, but worth it. It was perfectly toasted and full of mortadella. Everything on the menu sounded delicious and I would love to try more of the food options. Can't wait to visit again!

There were friendly patrons all around and we chatted with other bar admirers. We checked out the coffee shop, Warda, but didn't purchase anything then, but have had several of their desserts since then and they did not disappoint. The atmosphere is wonderful, indoor/outdoor bar, great outside seating - not sure how this will work in the winter? Between the two of us we had the beet salad, burger and steak tartare. Burger was good, but not the best smash burger that I've had. Beet salad was fine, however the cream cheese was a bit overpowering against the orange oil. It was dying for some citrus. Steak tartare was a bit dry, meaning that a small dab of olive oil would have added to the richness and overall mouth feel. I did not really taste the egg although I did see a dab of yolk on the tartare. Needed a bit of salt also to enhance the taste Menu was small, but it did cover a cross section of French bistro dishes. All in all, I thought it was a bit overpriced. So I will have to consider returning for a full meal. I would come back for a burger and beer at the bar.

Downtown Detroit definitely feels different now, and the crowd has shifted a bit, but none of that took away from what The Standby is. That alleyway magic is still there. Walking in honestly felt like a little blast from the past, and it made me really happy. It ended up being a highlight of my trip home. The food was phenomenal. The crab was so buttery, the waffle situation was amazing, and the overall execution across the menu was impressive. We ordered a lot, basically half the menu and everything hit. * Short rib plate: delicious, rich, and comforting * Chicken schnitzel with curry mustard: WOW. Juicy, crunchy, fresh, perfectly seasoned. The curry mustard was everything, and that little pepper on top? 10/10. This was hands down my favorite dish. * Drinks: They had brand ambassadors for Wild Turkey, giving out free Old Fashioneds, which was honestly the perfect touch. We also had a small ounce pour of a mezcal that was beautifully smoked, super aromatic and smoky in the best way. Service was great too, we had two different servers, and both were attentive and kind. The only miss for me personally was the pastrami salmon toast. I wanted to love it so badly because I love salmon and I love smoked fish, but it just wasn't for me. I actually sent it back (which I felt bad about). I think the slight sweetness, (possibly from the tomato jam)threw it off for my palate. I was craving something fully savory with a bit of acidity. I think a thicker, crunchier toast and a more umami-forward, citrusy or pickled element might have taken it where it needed to go. That said, I know pastrami-style salmon is a thing right now, it just didn't work for me. Everything else? Truly amazing. The Standby will forever be a place I come back to when I'm home. I'm excited to return, see what's new on the menu, and relive that magic again. Highly recommend. 10 out of 10. Will absolutely be back.

We had to continuously ask for more water. I tried the espresso no-tini ($11), a mocktail. It was good, but came in cordial glass and was essentially just a shot of chilled espresso. The setas ($14) were listed as a local wild mushroom blend with garlic and lemon. It was probably about a half cup of mushrooms, grilled, and served in a saucer. Finally, the charcuterie y queso ($21) was meat, cheese, sourdough, mustard, pickles, and honey. Everything was very salty and with no variation. It needed balance with a soft cheese, spice, or more sweetness. My charcuterie plate didn't come out until about an hour plus after we ordered, after multiple asks. It's hard to justify the delay when it's just hard cheese and meat, they didn't have to cook, and there were few other customers. (Essentially, we forgot).
