Caveat: We visited Peppermill during the coronavirus pandemic, and we might have a higher than normal interest in re-opening businesses through strict adherence to safety protocols. Outdoor seating, but too closely spaced for comfort and lots of nearby server traffic. Servers wore masks, but some dropped them to talk within several feet of customers or did not wear them over noses. Servers also delivered drinks, including those not generally taken with straws (e.g., beer), with fingers around the top of the glass. Food was fine but certainly not exceptional. read more

When the theater is the biggest draw in town beware of your dining choices. When midway through your meal you say, "put this on your list" ... you know it's sad. The "list" is the ones to remember not to come back to again. From the appetizers (crawfish with a remoulaud sauce, fried green tomatoes with crab salad) to the starters( mushroom soup with orange marmalade) to the entrees (lime salmon and fried oysters) it was one disappointing offering after another... we thought the service was quite good... the rest was dismal. If all the food is this mediocre then it should be curtains for this place. No encores. read more

The Peppermill has it all - great atmosphere, great food, great service. The only problem is that you have to pay for greatness! My coworkers take me out for my birthday every year, and I've chosen The Peppermill twice in a row. The Shrimp Margherita is my go-to dish, and I'd recommend the curried mushroom soup as well. Portions are rather small, but you can tell everything is of extremely high quality. Vegan options are available but limited, and there's a good selection of gluten-free options as well. Considering that service can be slow, and the prices are somewhat steep for the amount of food you receive, this place is better suited for special occasions than everyday lunch dates. read more

A must when you happen to be in this awesome historic little town in the heart of Virginia. New Location! Great food. My wife and I met friends for lunch and they told us The Peppermill reopened at a new location. 231 w. Main st, Abingdon. This is the location of the former House On Main that closed recently. Three of us ordered their Mill Cheeseburger and were very impressed. It was well prepared, juicy and tasty. A little pricey but not outrageous. Hopefully their dinner prices will remain modest. We'll return. read more

The most perfect display of mediocrity -a mix of both good and bad. Great building with OK decor,. Good service but not great. Very weak wine list. Soup was Good, fried oysters were good. The ribeye was great, perfect temp. Thank God I didn't let them put molasses and butter sauce on it. Crab cakes were weak at best. Bread was tasteless even with the pecan butter. Mashed potatoes were runny and also had no taste. Maybe a little butter please. Can someone please tell Restauranteurs that we are tired of having mashed potatoes and asparagus every time we have steak. Particularly in a place when there are no good options to substitute. When your prices say you are a medium to high end restaurant, the little things mean a lot. I would pay the extra and go down the street to the Tavern. read more

Gave this place a try while visiting some friends in the area. & words can not describe how good everything was I mean the service the wine heck the bread it was all good. Now as for the food. Simply jaw dropping I ended up with the Chicken Marsala when I took that first bite oh pure heaven. It was rich but oh so good. Great atmosphere nice and cozy had the fireplace going. My wife and I placed a take-out order from Peppermill tonight. When I took it home, we could not have been more disappointed. That is to say, we were very disappointed after the food was all gone! She had the ribeye with green beans/garlic mashed potatoes. I had the ribeye smothered in mushroom marsala sauce, with wild rice and green beans. We both had the French onion soup. Everything was delicious, steaks were prepared perfectly. The green beans tasted fresh, and prepared just right. On my part, that mushroom marsala sauce really made my meal perfect. We had a fabulous meal with friends here last week and we enjoyed it so much we're going back next week. The food was great - everyone raved about their dishes! Decided to go to the Barter theatre last night with an out of town guest. Called for a reservation but were told that they do not take reservation but arrival at 5:30 would be sufficient time to make the theatre and that seating would be no problem. Drive the 50 miles to Abington and arrived at the restaurant about five minutes late. There was no seating available and the kitchen had already closed service for the theatre patrons. This was the second time we were refused service. The first time we arrived at 6:00 without calling in advance. Frankly, the food at their price points is not worth the inconvenience caused by their poor service. I don't live in Abingdon, but I drive through town somewhat regularly. In the past, I've had a difficult time finding a good dinner stop in the area beyond BBQ or deep fried ingredient-X. The Peppermill didn't serve outstanding fare, but it will safely fill that void for me. The menu has a few creative twists, enough to feel like someone with formal training is behind it, having some fun with the classic techniques. So I appreciated the ideas, but the final food & flavors didn't really live up to it. Everything was fine, cooked "correctly" (including fresh salad and sides that weren't stewed to oblivion), but nothing really shone either. Good, but not great. In fact, I almost gave them 4 stars just out of appreciation for a welcome alternative in town. The alcohol selections were short and simple - a few imported and domestic beers, and short list of essential wine varieties, and a few reproducible martinis. Meat & seafood entrées were mostly $20 - $25 and included soup / salad plus starch and vegetable sides. The building itself felt a little schizophrenic - the outside would pass for a small-town fish shack while the interior was a mediocre contemporary design more aligned with the food. No big deal unless you're a purist. So I'd happily eat there again, but I could probably find a preferable stop in Knoxville if I felt like driving further. read more

Best dining experience I've ever had. Friendly staff. Beautiful place. We were accommodated in every way. We arrived early on a valentine's day and spent a while at the well stocked, and very quaint bar. For dinner, our portions were extraordinarily large. All courses outstanding. From soups and salads to rainbow trout and filets smothered in house rubs, it was the best dining experience of my wife and I's lives. I'm being 100 percent honest. We've eaten at some amazing places. This beats them all, and we ate for less than $70 read more

I was disappointed in the service. My husband and I were the only 2 sitting at the small bar on Saturday night. Every ticket the bar tender received was more important than we were. They needed more help to take care of drinks for the tables. A real slap in the face was being charged extra for asking for fresh Parmesan for my $28 pasta dish. read more

Despite high prices, it's just sugary mid-grade Southern food. The food was okay-ish, but to be honest it's one of those overpriced places that's mostly taking the top off Sysco cans, warming it up, and putting a bunch of sugar on it. Since I've mentioned the sugar a bunch, let me elaborate: my wife got a mini martini sampler, each of which was basically simple syrup with flavoring. They brought some bread out while we waited; the bread was super-sweet, even more so than "yo mama's bodacious southern dinner rolls." I had a salad, which was drenched in sugar + vinegar. My wife had a ravioli; the sauce was overpoweringly sweet. She also had the mushroom curry soup, which was sugar city. My daughter had penne + tomato sauce; guess what the main flavor of the sauce was? The food was fine, and I'd go back, don't get me wrong, it's one of the few decent restaurants in town. It's just that it's one of those places that doesn't really have talented cooks so everything just gets over-salted and over-sugared, and they're "puttin' on airs" of a fancy restaurant so everything is unjustifiably very expensive. All told, we spent three times as much here as we did across the street at the Bone Fire Smokehouse BBQ place and the food there was better by one or two notches. The waitstaff was very friendly, and we had no problem getting a table here when every other place in town was either closed or full. read more

What a find, at least for us. Nice old house setting, an extensive menu, good wine list, professional staff. What's not to like? My wife started out with their tomato soup and pronounced it wonderful. She was threatening to eat both but bowls of soup and their rolls, I had French Onion soup with bleu cheese crumbles. I would have never guessed that the combination could be so good. We both ordered trout, hers was herb crusted and mine was lightly blackened. I make good trout but this was excellent. Had a wonderful meal here while in Abingdon for work. The front desk clerk at the hotel I was staying at said it was one of his favorites and I can see why! The atmosphere is pretty eclectic and the service is friendly and prompt. I enjoyed a balsamic ravioli dish with chicken and veggies. The sauce was light and perfect. My coworker had the trout and love it. We also shared fried green tomatoes, which were great for a starter, and key lime pie for dessert. They also have a great wine selection.
