I had one of the best meals I have ever had here at the Peppermill. It was simple, but different, and that's what made it so extraordinary. My friend raved about the martinis here and they did not disappoint. They do smaller glass martini flights off their large menu of cocktail offerings so you can try more than one. We ordered a flight each so we could taste different ones. The special martini of the evening was a Pumpkin spice (not part of the flight) and my friend ordered that. we all took a sip and it was tasty. The mixologist knows her stuff. Every martini I tasted was phenomenal. My favorite, however, was the violet and I've started making them here at home, but not yet as good as that one was (Im still working on the recipe). What about the food, you say? Didn't you come here to do more than drink? Why yes, we did. I started with the cream of mushroom soup which is served with a dollop of orange marmalade-it ended up being an excellent combination. I got the shrimp Margherita with pasta for my main dish and it was stellar. My friends seemed to enjoy their dinners of vegetable curry and chicken with pasta. We ordered three desserts (I love dining with them). The lemon limoncello cake was light and airy; the tres leches, one of my favorite cakes, was properly made but the raspberry sauce made it too sweet and cloying (and I would recommend ordering it without it), but the salted caramel cheesecake was to die for: rich, sinfully decadent, with the right hint of salt. Im not a dessert eater and I could have licked the plate clean. Fantastic service, great ambience. Give this place a try and you won't be disappointed. read more

I had their soup/half sandwich for lunch. I tried the curry mushroom soup & OH.MY.GOODNESS!! It was sooo good! The BLT was also amazing...they did not skimp on the bacon like most places! This will be my go-to meal every time I come here! I also loved eating on the porch...nice summer day & it was really nice to be able to dine outside! Service is also great every time I have ever been. Have never had to wait for a server to come to the table & food has always come quickly. Highly recommend The Peppermill!!! read more

Atmosphere was great. Each room had a different vibe. The menu was diverse enough for everyone to find something of interest. I ordered the chicken marsala. The sauce was thicker and more of a cream sauce than I prefer. The rice was fine and the chicken was cooked nicely although some pieces almost had a "burgers on the grill next to them" sort of chargrilled taste. The cheesesteak was ordered by someone else in our party and it was probably my favorite of our dinner table. Biggest complaint was the timing. Called around 6 on a Tuesday and they said they weren't on a wait. We were there two hours - waited a very long time for even our apps and then got dessert to go bc we were running out of time. Kids burger - maybe 1/3 eaten. I'd say it was average. BLT - didn't taste but my kid said she preferred the one at the diner in Damascus Greek salad - good with a nice dressing Chicken Marsala - crazy large amount of chicken. Sauce was too thick and creamy. House salad - good amount of greens, fresh pepper was a nice touch. Martini flights - tried several and ruby red and tropical punch were favorites! Excellent options! Milky Way cake - got it to go and the marshmallow frosting was so light and fun to eat. Not overly sweet. read more

Drinks are usually served flat if it is supposed to have carbonation. They are okay. The service is a little slow. I wish they would put condiments on the table. You get salt and that is it. They will give you pepper if you ask. The food is good. read more

If you've ever been to Abingdon, VA, you'll know that there aren't many upper class restaurants to have business meetings for lunch. The Peppermill just happens to be one of the few in the eclectic and historic neighborhood. To that point, the restaurant is a converted 2 story house. The dinning rooms upstairs are literally the guest rooms. Hardwood floors throughout, it looks like a house right out of a movie - great atmosphere. I happened to have the Blue Cheese French Onion soup - VERY UNIQUE. I've honestly never had this combination before, but it works! Now be warned, the strong blue cheese and french onion may not work for everyone, but I happen to love blue cheese, and I love french onion soup, so it works for me. I had the Caesar salad. you had the pick of protein and i picked the steak medallions medium rare. Truly delectable, juicy, and very tender cut. it's the perfect balance of trying to eat healthy and indulging in steak for lunch at the same time. When you first arrive, the hostess will ask you if you are going to see a "show" also. the restaurant is associated with the very small movie theater and they may prioritize your service based on your showtime. Good option for entertainment if you're in town for "dinner and a show". I was here on biz for lunch, so no show for us. read more

Nice ambience, mediocre food. Reviews were good and it was walking distance, so we tried it. One had the fettucini alfredo special, and one had a burger with sweet potato fries. It was all just okay but overall lacked flavor and wasn't worth the price. The martinis were, again, okay, but more cocktails than martinis and, again, not worth the price. Service was good, and the restaurant is in an old home, which is really cool, but I wouldn't eat here again. read more

My experiences show that the food is consistently good, the servers do their best to do a good job and are friendly, and the atmosphere is nice and inviting. Being an old home with high ceilings makes for a relaxing atmosphere. read more

This place is great! We called ahead of time to ask if they allow dogs on their patio. The answer was: yes, of course - this immediately won our hearts. Outside seating area faces a carefully maintained lawn, and the place overall feels homey. The menu is an interesting mix of dishes from all over. We dropped by on whim Saturday given the all around cuteness factor of the place. Had to wait 1/2 but no worries with a Guinness and watermelon margarita (special of the day) on the front porch. We Had the asian salad with salmon and club with sweet potato fries. Salad was right amount of crunch. Club was more like a sandwich so needed a bit more meat/bacon to get into the 5 category. Fries came with honey butter which was a big plus. Atmosphere very nice. The menu was varied and would try about anything on it. I would love to visit for dinner. read more

I ate here with some family from the area and we all enjoyed our meals. Everything was hot and fresh. We all really enjoyed the Bleu Cheese French Onion Soup and the Tomato Basil Soup. Serving sizes for dinner are large. Being an old, restored home gives a warm and cozy ambiance. It's also quiet which we loved! My partner had the Cuban sandwich, and I had the black bean burger. Both tasted and looked as if they had just been microwave-thawed and then grilled next to hamburgers. Our salads were limp, and our drinks were uneventful. Our wait for the food was long, most likely due to understaffing; the same person who seated us was also our server, and I saw only one other server, who was also bartending. Ambience is still beautiful, but sadly, the "feel" just isn't there anymore. The Peppermill used to be my favorite restaurant in Abingdon, but the quality and overall experience has declined a great deal during COVID. read more

One of my coworkers and I had lunch at The Peppermill while training in Abingdon. We arrived around Noon on a Thursday and noticed that quite a few other patrons were there. We were immediately seated upstairs and appreciated being next to a window. After we were seated it seemed to take forever for our server to arrive. It became clear that there was not nearly enough help for the busy lunch hour. When our server arrived, she was on top of things. We explained that we were in a bit of a hurry, and she was very accommodating: got our order in quickly, brought us our check with our food, etc. I ordered the curried mushroom soup and the Cobb salad with Bleu cheese dressing. The soup lived up to it's rave reviews. It really was something special. My only regret was ordering a cup rather than a bowl. The salad was very good (super fresh ingredients and perfectly seasoned and grilled chicken), but it was far too small for the price. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 thanks to a great server and host mushroom soup. read more

That being said, given that the dinner entrees cost $27-$30 average, I had expected the food to taste better. Additionally, I had experienced a longer wait to receive my order. Went to celebrate a friend's birthday several weeks ago. The service was fine except he didn't listen to us when we asked questions about gluten-free options. The food was mediocre at best. I enjoyed the mushroom soup very much but the rest of our meals were not as good as I thought they should be. I felt like the food was overpriced for the quality that we received. But we enjoyed ourselves and the atmosphere made up for the food somewhat. Will not hurry back. read more

While on our way to a wedding in Cookeville TN. 2 weeks ago, we stopped off at the PEPPERMILL for a nice lunch after a 5 hour drive. It was anything but. We chose this restaurant because of the excellent reviews and slightly more reasonable prices than their competitor: RAIN. Bad Choice on our part. I have no idea what all the 'rave' reviews are about on-line, but the food and drinks were the worst we've had to suffer thru as far as we can remember - and we've been together for 11 years. From the slightly impatient hostess to the long waits in-between moments we shared with our waitress in the less-charming upstairs section, this was an eating experience to forget. A martini, dry with olives was ordered. A 'Dirty' Martini, drowned in olive brine was served. The 'bread' was 2 small, semi-tough rolls which were purportedly made 'in-house'. (Doubtful) I've had better from the cut-out racks at Walmart. My partner's meal was a salad topped with chicken breast. $16. Mine was 'the Special': an orzo dish also topped with chicken breast. $22 Mine came with a side salad - I asked if the dressing was made in-house. Waitress said yes. I would bet any wager you'd care to name that it came from the cheapest store-brand bottle. My partner's salad was, (as was mine), straight from a bag. Both our chicken breasts were small, flat, and dry. (I would guess also from a bag, of frozen pieces.) Mine was especially confusing as the orzo was cold, mixed with what must have been left-over tomatoes, pepper and red onion bits, but the wretched chicken was hot! And the flavors? Flavors that clashed instead of working together. I've made better left-overs at home. But our waitress did swing by with a giant pepper grinder twice. As if it might magically repair the damage. Overall, I would reckon there was about $4.00 of 'food' served to us at this meal for the outrageous sum of nearly $40! (To be fair, the walnut butter served with the rolls was very good.) And that didn't include our drinks! Perhaps at one time this place deserved a fraction of the praise others have given it on-line, but if our meal was any indication, that day is apparently long past. If it were possible to give a NO STARS rating in reviewing, I would. Sorry this was such a long review, but if it serves to have them reevaluate both service and food prep then it's worth it. I enjoy eating lunch here on their wrap around porch. As part of any dining out experience I feel that not only must the food be consistent and well prepared but the server plays a huge role in a successful experience. My favorite server is moving on to do bigger things. David always has a smile and pleasant attitude. He remembers the wine I enjoy and is very attentive. I will miss him. Nice place, nice quaint bar and good food. Service is good. The only thing I can suggest is some soft music in the background and for the staff to be a little quieter amongst themselves. The dining rooms need a little something, maybe flowers or nice lamps or candles lit at each table. It just needs a little touch of something. read more

The restaurant has a nice antique feel, lots of history in the home. One thing I did not care for is the room setup, we were sat in a small room with three other groups and the acoustics allowed us to listen in on other people's conversations. Definite must stop. I've seen some of the reviews, and unsure what restaurant they were reviewing but doubt it's The Peppermill. We have eaten here consistently for weeks. The dishes are unique. If you don't trust a chef to give you something a little different then go to Applebee's or Chili's. The nuances on traditional dishes make the experience. The old house is very charming and great story surrounds it. We have eaten at varying times and never have difficulty with service or seating. Rosito is one of the most adept bar tenders and is very knowledgeable about pairings and the menu. Again, if near Abingdon stop by. They don't take reservations so get there early or just sit in the bar area. read more

I don't know what happened at the Peppermill, maybe it was the COVID mess. We have been to this restaurant several times over the years until 2019. It was our favorite restaurant in Abingdon, delicious food although a little expensive. So, after 3 years we were back in town and went to dinner this evening, while the wait staff were very pleasant, I was extremely disappointed in the taste and quality of the food. I ordered the Pork medallions thinking they were probably cut from the tenderloin. They were in fact two large, overcooked loin chops with very little flavor. My wife had a burger that was questionable. Sadly, this was probably the last time we will go there. read more

We were looking for a safe place for dinner with outside seating. What caught our eye was the gorgeous, bright orange leafed tree in front and diners sitting on a nice wrap around porch. We decided to try it and were greeted with a wonderful hostess that quickly took our temperature. All were wearing masks for our ultimate protection. We had a great outside table, properly distanced from other tables. The waitress, Kelly, was efficient and welcoming. The food was great and very reasonable.
