Brent & Wendy Lee were fantastic. So warm and inviting and eager to help us with dinner suggestions, tourist recommendations, and anything we could dream of to make us more comfortable. Their home is a beautiful gem and our room was large, comfortable, beautifully decorated (most of the artwork on display was painted by the two of them!) and the yard and gardens were spectacular. We appreciated being in the suburbs down a quiet lane and a little closer to the Halifax airport, it made our next day just that much easier and more relaxed. Breakfast was gourmet level. No expense was spared, no detail overlooked. Sugar cubes for tea? Sure but also rock candy swizzle sticks if you preferred! Beautiful garnishes on each plate. We had "Atlantic breakfast" tea, fresh fruit served with a dollop of yogurt and a hint of honey drizzle and chopped nuts, a cheddar chive biscuit with eggs and hollandaise sauce with a side of ham. Every bite was perfect. The only thing was slightly odd was the ensuite bathroom had a curtain instead of a door. It was very elegant, but didn't offer much privacy between the bedroom and bathroom. The giant whirlpool tub more than made up for that though, talk about WOW factor.

It is near nice places to eat, near the airport, and very easy to get to and from. On top of all of that, the place was absolutely beautiful, inside and out. We were very well taken care of. And while I've never been an overnight guest myself, I've visited its enchanting interiors and will marvel accordingly. My roommate's parents were in town and staying at the Waverley. Living quite close at the time, we took a walk over to have a visit and investigate the premises. Decor embraced Old Victorian Style and European decadence. The space was personal, rich and beautifully presented. Chandeliers, wallpapering and popping textures appealed to my visuals. It all takes one back to an older time, when furnishings were classic and gladly adorned. Its bed and breakfast style allows for a home away from home feel, but in the lapse of Old Style luxury. Apparently rooms each have their own unique look- no two the same! This would make for reason to come again... They offer free wi-fi in all guest rooms and a tasteful hot breakfast buffet for all guests. (also free) The staff seemed kind and welcoming in my brief encounter and it all made me reflect quite positively on this little spot! The Waverly has age to back its appeal. The inn has been around for many generations and housed Halifax's own Anna Leonowens and Jon Doul. And on an international scale: the one and only Oscar Wilde! With such deep roots and moderate prices, The Waverly proves to be a top contender in Halifax hospitality. If I ever need to hotel in Halifax, this is a spot that comes to mind!

This is a review that I've been dreading having to write, if for no other reason than I know…read morethere's very little I can say that can do my time at this stunning bed and breakfast justice. Having been very lucky to stay in some pretty incredible places around the world, there's no question that The Old Parsonage easily ranks within my top five. I was stuck looking for a place to get away for a couple of days to myself during which I could do nothing but write, drink wine, relax, and write some more. (And drink more wine...obviously.) After a chance meeting with one of the two owners, an artist himself who takes pride in offering a unique space for creativity, I was sold on the Maitland Suite and booked myself in for a two night, three day stay. When I finished the hour-ish drive from the city, I was floored to realize that I had the entire building to myself - meaning that my plans of being a recluse in my room for three straight days instantly changed to cozying up in any of the six to eight different sitting rooms that were all at my disposal. The fact that I was able to feel as comfortable as I would at home, except with infinitely more beautiful surroundings and gorgeous wood-fire heat, was unbelievable. From room to room, it's plain to see that not a single detail has been overlooked. Each space is a meticulous collection of shabby-chic décor that's both luxurious and liveable - that is, it's not a place where you feel uncomfortable spending the entire day and night. I lounged around like I owned the place, stopping short of napping in the middle of the main living room although I can't imagine that having been a problem... You won't have to rush out in the mornings in search of provisions either. I would make my way downstairs at my leisure to find fresh orange juice, coffee, toast, and scrambled eggs ready for the feasting as I chatted with the owners about life in the UK, our favourite cities around the world, and the importance of getting away from it all from time to time. Truly, I could go on and on, but I won't. Instead, I'll just say that before even leaving the premises, I had already arranged two more plans to return with family, and am already looking forward to my next writing escape. I can't imagine spending them anywhere else.

It was an amazing 2 night…read moretrip to see 6 Primrose at the Devour Food and Film Fest in Wolfville, NS, but I also knew that we NEEDED to add on a couple days and see Halifax. Hence, where the Halliburton comes in. I spent a couple days searching Hotels.com for all the options, reading websites, and talking to peeps from Halifax to get an idea of where we'd want to stay. I finally settled on the Halliburton and so happy that we did. It's a historic site literally 3 blocks from the water. The buildings official dates are listed outside on plaques as Halliburton House 1823, Henry House 1834, and Pryor-Benney House 1831. You can see the bay out the front door. We ended up with a basement suite to save our money for eating all the seafood our bellies could hold and it worked out great. The bathroom had been recently renovated and Bath and Body Works toiletries were complimentary. It's a series of three townhouses that have been converted into a "boutique hotel." Parking is included but limited and super squished. I don't think you could fit a large truck in the back. They do have overflow parking down the street next to the waterfront, but I'm not sure of the details. Breakfast is included and was your standard continental with one or two hot items. On our stay the hot item was beans. There was also cold sliced ham and hard boiled eggs. Coffee and tea is available complimentary throughout your stay. The basement did have a bit of an older musty smell, I'm not sure you can get around that being old and so close to the water but I didn't mind. Right off the lobby, is "Stories," their fine dining restaurant. The menu looked lovely and I'm sure it would make for a romantic eat in experience but we were more interested in walking around and checking out local pubs. I highly recommend Henry House Pub just two blocks away (delicious and traditional meat pies) and the Bicycle Thief (waterfront) for a fancier night out. Also, no elevator here if that's a concern for you or your party. I would definitely stay here again. So many things to do and see all within walking distance. https://www.thehalliburton.com

On-site parking is a definite plus for Halifax and the spaces were adequately sized, but when an oversize pickup parked next to our little compact car, we had a heck of a time getting out of our space without bonking into the neighbor's porch. Location is decent but unexceptional; it's a few blocks away from the main attractions of Downtown Halifax, although our room was nice and quiet. Be aware that the rooms are all located in townhouses that are extremely narrow, with tight hallways, low ceilings, and a lot of half-steps that can pose a tripping hazard. Staff was pleasant but we would have appreciated if someone had showed us to our room, especially since it wasn't all that easy to find from the front desk with how the Halliburton is set up. Overall, our stay was adequate, but we would have chosen to stay at a more central and modern hotel if we had to do it over.

The price was right for a 4-night stay before tourist season started. The location was very quiet and fairly central to where I traveled around town--I didn't need car parking, but there were no designated areas to store/lock a bike. Note well that the staff is not around 24/7, and while pleasant, don't expect ABCD service. What's offered is delivered as promised, but hopefully you won't have any atypical requests (like a bike rack or access to a snack after hours!) My room was cozy and clean, nothing notable or inadequate. Walls are a bit thin, and you will hear muffled TV/conversation in adjacent rooms or other guests in the halls. Bed wasn't the most comfortable, but the there was a rain shower and the A/C was tops! My experience with the other guests was very cordial over breakfast and coffee, all seemed to be older parents of college kids in town for a visit or similar. Thankfully, the crowd was pretty sedate and respectful of the homey atmosphere. Speaking of breakfast, I had no issues with the selection offered complimentary with the stay--I had a ritual of going down to the dining room each morning and sipping coffee over buttered croissants. GSPI had a selection of coffee, juices, yogurt, various pastries/breads, bagels, simple coldcuts/cheese and hardboiled eggs. Very European-type feel. I'd love to come back for another stay at GSPI!

When I arrived, a single traveler, despite the fact that I had a confirmed reservation, the owner told me that there were no rooms available but that she would give me her "son's room." I wasn't in the mood to go off in search of an alternative, so I went with it. Extremely small room, uncomfortable bed, and clearly not set up as a guest room. As they say, "Strike one." In the morning, despite having a set time for breakfast, the owner was nowhere to be found. All of the guests gathered in the living room / dining room area, and we were fairly unimpressed. Then, the owner appeared with bags of groceries. Of course, she still had to prepare the breakfast, so all of us were inconvenienced by the wait and having to accommodate the owner's schedule. Strike two. When I was leaving, I was told that the owner's credit card machine was down and I would have to pay cash instead. This required the extra step (and delay) of having to run to a bank as I did not have the cash on hand. Strike three. Finally, a personal note: the owner is a prolific gossip and even during my very brief stay, I overheard her make nasty comments about both former and current guests. She also made some fairly critical and generalistic comments about American citizens, which I found offensive but more importantly, from a business perspective, not very wise on her part. I'm sure that many of her customers and potential customers live in the United States of America... Bottom line: you can easily do much better than the Verandah, so you should avoid it.
