Waverley Inn

My husband and I passed through Halifax three times on our three week Atlantic Canada trip, and the Waverley Inn was the first place we had the pleasure of resting our heads while there. We spent three nights and were both very impressed. The Inn has been open since the late 1800s and is not showing her age at all. From the outside of the building to the main lobby to the rooms, everything is beautiful and well done. Beautiful hardwood floors throughout . When we checked in, the man at the front desk (I believe his name was Matt, I might be wrong) was genuinely friendly and excellent at his job. I came across him a few times during our stay and he was always this way. We stayed in a Traditional room ($129/night in high season - August) on the second floor, which was small but cozy, not suffocating at all. I am not an easy sleeper, and the bed in that room was arguably the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. It was soft, the way I like it, and had this amazing V-shaped pillow that knocked me out instantly. Note - there is not an elevator in the building. Breakfast was included in the price and we both found it to be quite sufficient. Cereal, yogurt, fruit, hashbrowns, eggs, oatmeal, juice.... There was also a little table next to the front desk that had cookies or squares each day, along with some apples, and coffee and tea. I really appreciated this as it was nice to grab an apple or a cookie for the road. The Inn has free Wifi and a computer in the lobby as well. The Inn is located in a quiet part of downtown, about a 10 minute walk from the waterfront, the Citadel, shopping and almost everything else you'll want to get to in Halifax. We had a rental car as we were heading out of the city quite a bit, and a huge bonus for us was the free parking provided in a good sized lot right beside the Inn. I also have to add that when I phoned from home to book the room months before our stay, the man on the phone was also extremely helpful and nice. I would absolutely stay here again and recommend it to anyone going to Halifax. We stayed in three different hotels in Halifax, and this was the best.

My girlfriend and I stayed here for four nights in a beautifully appointed and spacious queen room on the top floor; it even had a skylight! Staff was extremely efficient and friendly; someone was always cleaning something ... baseboards, shelves, tables, anything and everything ... the place was immaculate. All this was within walking distance to everything the harbour area has to offer. Plus, free wifi, free parking, free buffet breakfast and fresh coffee and goodies in the lobby make it an exceptional value. Look no further than the Waverly!

The kind desk person got me a lakefront room even though the reservation didn't technically say so. They went out of their way to be accommodating and I appreciated it. The lake is beautiful and worth the stay on that side. Beds were comfy with lots of pillows. Body wash, shampoo, and conditioner are provided in the shower in pump bottles. Breakfast is included for hotel guests and offered a variety of hot and cold food options. The breakfast seating area is large, and there is an outdoor deck with tables if the weather cooperates. Everything was clean and the coffee was good. The pool area was clean and I had it to myself for most of the time I used it. There was an arcade on the same floor which I wanted to use (air hockey!) but I ran out of time. There is free parking and it was a short drive into Halifax. It's close enough to the city but far enough out to be quiet and relaxing. I would definitely return.

I just randomly picked this place for my first-time visit to Halifax. I lucked out on my selection!…read moreExcellent hotel in all respects! Heated parking garage beneath hotel . . . Great daily breakfast with good variety . . . Superb location . . . Nice staff. I have absolutely no complaints. This hotel made my Christmas in Halifax one to remember!!!

Well, where do I begin:…read more The hotel is near a convention center - literally across the street. If you're going to the convention center and that's your goal for a quick commute this is your hotel. That was not my goal. It was a family vacation and we wanted a center location for our family to stay. The center location was fabulous. and the staff were friendly enough. Breakfast was fine (eggs, sausage, cereal, bagels, etc on the buffet area). The staff at the breakfast was more than amazing. Especially one waiter - we got there at 930am and several people were running up right before. and he was so good. Breakfast is included and it runs until 10 am. We opted for a studio bedroom with a queen and a pull out couch for our young daughter. When our daughter was pulling out the drawers in the kitchen we luckily realized the knives were in the 2nd to the last drawer to the floor. For the love of god - please move the knives to a higher drawer. Who puts the sharp knives in a low drawer? Sharp knives always go in a top drawer. C'mon people. We had no sheets/pillows/blankets for said pull out couch and had to run and track down a maid who was very gracious to us. We made her bed and thought it was going to be a great night. Well what we did not realize is that the hotel directly faces Maxwell's Plum. What is that? It is a bar with an outdoor funfest. It is loud and will keep you up way past a child's bedtime and then even your adult bedtime if you are one of the lucky guests to have a literal audience facing this. If you come here - I highly suggest you opt for a bedroom not facing this area. Secondly - do not opt for a room near the stairwell either - we had a double whammy. Music and the sound of the stairwell door slamming. Meant for a lovely Friday night. We probably went to bed around 12 or 1? Also it cost $25 to park. We couldn't get out of the parking garage for a while because several people were smoking right in front of the exit location. (Granted not the hotels issue directly but it just added to the fabulous evening we had).

Hearthstone Inn - The coolest our room ever got with the air conditioner at maximum and also using an additional fan that we purchased.

They stand right at the bottom of the ramp and stairs so you cannot avoid them. It stinks, makes you gag, and just looks tacky. If staff, then go out back. If guests, go do it in your car. If others, get rid of them. There is a sign that says no vaping or smoking near the entry, but you still have to get through the crap to get to the entry. Our other main complaint is the air conditioning. The first room had lousy air conditioning. Add to that the huge, sharp, crack in the window (running from top to bottom), a couple other problems, and we were not comfortable. They moved us to another room on another floor, and the a/c wasn't much better. At full blast, the fan didn't circulate well, and you could only feel the cold if you put your hand on the worn metal of the a/c unit. There was a thermometer in the room, and it never went below 75F. We ended up having to buy a portable fan to blow on me while sleeping. Moving around in the room made us too hot, so we rarely spent any time there. My husband, who gardens in 100F weather, even had a cold damp facecloth on his head to keep from sweating. Decorations in the hall and room were broken. The brown towels had bleach stains on them. The microwave was antiquated, and we unplugged it. The little fridge froze our water (although, I guess that could be a plus). If they were to put some love and money into this place it could really shine. We prefer supporting small businesses over major hotel chains, and we like the charm of classic decor, but between the over-heated rooms and smokey entry, we would not recommend this to many of our friends. Truly a shame because, for our needs, the location was terrific and, as previously mentioned, the staff was very nice. SO much potential.
