Late in 2017, my five year old Lenovo Ideapad I7 core computer with MS Word 8.1 was running slowly and had difficulty talking with a Brother printer purchased in 2017 purchased at the same store. I thought the computer needed a diagnosis, probably a reboot and some work on the networking linkages. On my first visit, I paid for a diagnosis and was asked if I wanted Windows 8.1 replaced with Windows 10. Despite my reservations, (I explained that I had attempted a download of Windows 10 just after it was introduced, and quickly deleted it following numerous weird little inconveniences that I put down to Microsoft's typical premature launching of under tested software.) But I gave the tech the benefit of the doubt. Instead of leaving Windows 8.1 in place, they proposed installing Windows 10 with Bit Defender and Acronis (a well regarded backup), selling me a two year service plan as well.
When I took the computer home, I noticed perhaps a 10% improvement in computer speed. Geek Squad had saved and reinstalled the personal My Documents files as requested. I was not pleased with Windows 10 installation, but saw some improvement with virus protection with Bit Defender over McAffee, but found no obvious benefit to the Acronis' back up. I complained politely, submitted to masculine placation and limped along, with poor communication between the Lenovo computer and Brother printer.
On April 10, 2018, I took the computer back to Geek Squad. To make a long story short, the hard drive was replaced at cost of about $250.00 + HST. My personal files andMS for Home and Student were deleted (again). Despite paying for a $49.95 diagnostic, the printer still does not properly work with the computer, the new hard drive has perhaps increased functionality by 10%, not the assured 100 % improvement.
And there are undesired new problems. Bit Defender and Acronis are competing with each other in their new found incompatibility in their competition and to protect my financial institution files. There are lots of tiresome and distracting pop ups. Printer prints but its icon has been lost on the desk top. My PC home operating system was deleted and I have wasted 3 hours trying to reboot Google to recover my book marks and follow up with Acronis and Bitdefender troubleshooting unsuccessfully. Very, very disappointed.
