This was one of the oddest restaurant experiences I have ever had. I called in a Deluxe (pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, green pepper, and onion) pizza on a GF crust with vegan cheese, but they mistakenly made me a plain vegan cheese pizza on a GF crust first. It took ten extra minutes to get out of there, but they didn't charge me any more than what I already paid, so it felt like a buy one, get one free offer and the ambiance was decent. I blasted the heater in my car so the pizzas were still warm enough. I ate them both in about 17 minutes, and that is really how to fill up one's stomach. Both had a decent crunch on the outside of the crust, but the deluxe was far more flavorful, and tasted like classic Italian cuisine. The plain pizza was smothered in cheese and it felt like I would have rather fed it to my two-year-old sister, but it still tasted good. The last time this kind of accident happened was several years ago at Mellow Mushroom, but overall, I was still treated to a good meal. read more

My friends and I are spending a few days in Mars Hill and stumbled across The Original Papa Nick's and decided to give it a try, and I am so glad we did. We went on a Friday night and the indoor dining was considerably busy, but we only had to wait about 5-10 minutes before being seated. The inside of Papa Nick's is such a cute, cozy place and our server Becky was amazing. The food was delicious! We ordered their specials of stuffed salmon and chicken and cheese manicotti, and we devoured everything. The peanut butter now was delicious as well. The takeout window was the only thing open. We ordered two small pies. One Greek gluten free and one Special. Crust was amazing on both.

Our trip to Mars Hill wasn't supposed to involve a stop here, but sometimes things don't work out how you planned. We were in town on a Wednesday and little did we know the place we wanted to go was closed. We considered another location, but it didn't have alcohol so as luck would have it we ended up at Papa Nick's. We are able to wet our whistle with a drink and fill out bellies at the same time. I had the chicken manicotti, salad and delicious bread. The bread was so rich in garlic, it will keep the vampires away but I loved it. The manicotti was very good as well. My friend had the lasagna and was equally as pleased and stuffed. It was a good size piece and for some might even result in leftovers. Ordered online at least an hour ahead as we were in no hurry. 1.5 hrs later checked in at the carry out area and were told two minutes. 20 minutes later checked in again and were told "we don't have time to check in on your food". Very rude. If they can't handle a few tables and a carry out window they are in bad shape. read more

Drove to Mars Hill from Asheville beautiful drive and the restaurant is a straight shot and easy to find. I have eaten several times at Papa Nick's's takeout (which is also delicious) but the restaurant is absolutely lovely. Very simple menu, but at dinner time it's packed, even midweek. The waitresses are so kind they explain everything and discussed the specials and special desserts at length with me. So choose carefully. It was my birthday and I enjoyed a fabulous Italian meal. They allowed me to switch up what I wanted and my goodness was it delicious. If you go there for the garlic knots alone you will feel like a winner they are spectacular. So good you'll want to take some home and they're so inexpensive. They freeze beautifully and last for ages. I know I took them home lol !! After dinner if you have time just walk around the campus it's literally around the corner it's lovely, green and peaceful. Please try it out you won't be disappointed and let me know if you agree? Food and service was excellent. It gets very loud and acoustics aren't that good. So difficult to carry on a conversation. That could be a big plus depending on who you are with. But we are repeat customers. Lasagna is terrific along with the VERY garlic knots. Yum. Great place. read more

My husband and I were visiting for a few days and needed something to eat after a long road trip. I had done my homework before and knew I wanted to try this place. Little did I know how great it was going to be! Our meal started with garlic knots which were delicious. I have never had garlic knots like that before, you could tell the knot itself was made in-house. I had one of the specials which was shrimp scampi and my husband had the shrimp alfredo. I eat a lot of places and this was the BEST cooked shrimp I have ever had, it was so tender and not a bit overcooked. I was so impressed and was not expecting that from a little Italian restaurant. We both vowed to come back again before our trip was over! We did, and we tried their pizza to share with the family. Food: the pizza was okay, crust was good, generous toppings, sauce was slightly lacking in flavor. I have always preferred pizza from Papa Nicks when I wanted a FABULOUS pizza...but the pizza I picked up yesterday was so disappointing....dough and tomato sauce are the important base for a tasty product and both of these were unpalatable.. the dough was minus blah and the tomato/pizza sauce tasted burnt and was sparse ( in this case thank goodness) I had always been happy to pay premium price for a PRIMO pie from Papa Nicks !!! I eat here, religiously, once a year when I visit Asheville. Everything about this family-owned restaurant is perfect. It is a charming space in the charming small town of Mars Hill (a quick and well-worth-it drive from Asheville). Free parking along the street. The inside is welcoming, friendly and always crowded (the food is that good!). The service is always exemplary. I always go inside the restaurant for table service, but from what I understand, it is also a take-out place. I always get the same thing, baked ziti. It is piping hot and delicious and a lot of food for a small price (I think it's around $12 - cheap in my thinking). It comes with a nice fresh green salad with delicious dressing (the 1,000 island is fantastic!) and a bowl of the BEST garlic rolls anywhere. I am a vegetarian, so I very much appreciate it that I can get it with plain red sauce (or a meat sauce for the meat-eaters). Last night, my friend had the salmon, which came on a bed of quinoa with a side of asparagus - he said it was great. Again, the price was reasonable (I think about $13). I laughed when I got the bill because it would have been about double that in Miami! (We pay $20 for the dish I got here for $12.) I highly recommend this place and when I return, I really want to try the pizza - it looked so good on other people's table. It is a down-home, family place - just like it was in Miami. I have longed for the garlic rolls. After having them all those years in Miami, I never, ever found a place where they were as good. And, they definitely stayed as good, if not better than I remembered them. (See my photo - you can tell how delicious they are by the picture!) I had the meatless baked ziti. It was very good. It comes with a nice green salad. I had the thousand island dressing, and the server told me it was made there - it was SO good. My friend had a calzone that was ENORMOUS. He said it was very good. The portions of all our meals was very big; and the price was very reasonable. Mars Hill is a tiny, tiny town about 20 miles from Asheville - it is most definitely a far cry from Miami (in a good way!). We got there around 5:45ish on a Wednesday night. We were seated right away, but by the time we left, the entire restaurant was full. I suggest going early. Oh, and if you use cash to pay for your meal, they give you a 10% discount! I like that! The chicken itself tasted great but the pasta wasn't anything traditional, it was like egg noodles or vermicelli with an extremely underwhelming, watery red sauce. Surprising to say the least.
