The shop is full of colourful, enticing confectionery. By the standards of old-fashioned sweets, the prices are very reasonable, and the sweets are good. They range from toffee and peanut flavours to fruits-and-cream and my favourite, fizzy fish. This was unintentional as there wasn't a 'closed' chain across the door preventing us entering - but none-the-less as soon as we realised it was closed we left the room straight away to continue with our sweet shopping! At which point, much to our surprise, an angry girl ranted at us on how we had no right to be in there (making us feel like criminals!) - we straight away apologised saying we didn't know it was out of bounds and just wanted to buy some souvenir sweets from our day in Cheddar!!! After a long walk up the gorge, the treat of handmade sweets was our top priority! We swiftly made for the exit, but as we did, an older lady also began properly shouting at us, saying "who do we think we are just wandering into closed rooms". Again we tried to explain that it was an honest mistake and thought all parts of the shop were permitted for customers to walk around and seeing as no harm was done we really didn't think we should be treated this way. Fiery words were thrown such as 'cant you read' so with our money still clutched in our hands we left, followed by a trail of angry rants.... I can honestly say i have never been spoken to like that by a complete stranger! On top of this, it was embarrassing as my boyfriend lives in cheddar and my friend was visiting from London so we wanted to show her what a nice FRIENDLY village cheddar was -instead we all left feeling upset and just as importantly sweet-less!!! I'm sure the sweets are good and other staff nice, but my experience with these 2 members of staff has genuinely left me upset. It was a rainy day and I imagine customers were few and far between, so if they were in a bad mood about something, it seems a bit unnecessary! We were…read moreoffered a range of beverages but were not informed that hot chocolate would be an additional charge . Also due to a busy morning there was a limited selection of cakes- we booked well in advance ... The carrot cake was very stodgy and ended up in the bin ! However the chocolate fudge cake was apparently delicious. Could have done with a bit more cream for the scones but we did not request more and we also found the scones bit sticky . On paying the bill we were charged for the additional top up money for the hot chocolates and when we queried it we were told we should have looked at the website ! Perhaps you should have told us ! Felt a bit mislead ! we had a nice time but would not return .
