Great idea! The organic box is a grocery delivery service in Edmonton. I have ordered from them in the past and they were great. Produce are good and fresh. I noticed some of the boxes have really unique vegetable or fruits which I have always enjoyed. Downside? The online portal. The method is quite silly and confusing. If you miss the deadline to order you will have to confirm your order on the day before the cut off date for your delivery. Yes, I know its confusing. So basically you have tentative orders that you will have to confirm at a specific time during the week. The overall system is very confusing which put me off ordering again from them. Easier to go to the farmers market and get groceries. read more

The Organic box is a grocery box delivery system with an emphasis on delivering organic groceries. They strive hard to deliver local produce, however in winter that becomes a difficulty. Yet, they manage to stick to local dairy & eggs which is great. The price is reasonably decent, if you ask me. I get the Single's Box which costs $35 and includes a variety of organic fruits and vegetables. I must emphasis that the $35 that you spend on this box is more than sufficient in terms of 5 -7 meals of food that include vegetables in it. However, additional money will be spent by people on things like dairy, grains, eggs, lentils and so on. Most of these things can be bought at an additional cost and added to your weekly box. I usually get a loaf of bread, six eggs and either milk or yogurt. All in all, I spend roughly $50 a week on my organic groceries. Of course, I cook some form of meat (fish, poultry included) about twice a week and would add that to my weekly expense on groceries. Of course, the greatest aspect of the Organic Box is that you get fresh, local groceries on a weekly basis. What I've also realized is that via this delivery system, I have a fixed amount of money spent monthly on groceries. (roughly $200 + extra on meats, rice etc.). However, the best part about the Organic box is that I get to experiment like hell! Instead of going to a grocery store and picking your favorite vegetables (mind you, I'm a foodie), it's great to have the restrictions of what is actually available in farms at a particular time of the year. In that sense, I've learned new recipes with kale, chard, shitake mushrooms in pasta, fresh dill flavored brown rice, frittatas with mushrooms, beefsteak tomatoes, chard and other such delicious things I wouldn't have bothered to pick up otherwise. If you're up for the challenge to try something new and exciting in your kitchen and have access to a fixed expense organic food delivery sysetm, the Organic box is for you! I've noticed that whenever I go to Save on foods or Planet Organc, I end up spending money on things that I don't really need. I recently discontinued my Organic Box. I've found that I can purchase organic items at my local farmer's market, Costco, grocery store, and local organic farms (Peas on Earth) for less than what I was paying the Organic Box. If you don't have time to run around or don't want to go to a few places for fresh organic produce and fruits and don't mind paying a little extra than the Organic Box may just be right for you. My sister-in-law had purchased me a gift certificate to try the Organic Box when I went on bedrest - and it was fun to see the variety that came each week! But I still don't think the value is good enough to keep me returning for more. A few times we received produce that molded within a day - but that happens from the regular grocery chains, too. I think the concept is phenomenal and if you don't have time or just want some healthy fruits delivered to your place of work every week - then this just may be for you! Our family enjoys grocery shopping - checking out local markets - and the places we shop carry a variety of organic items at generally lower prices so it didn't make any sense for us to continue with the Organic Box. read more

I was on a really healthy kick a few years back eating mostly organically grown products and trying to support local businesses while at it. I heard about TOB through a friend and wanted to give it a try - and I did for a few months. Customer service was easy to deal with. Ordering online was even easier. I haven't ordered from them in quite some time but the premise is - you place an order online and if you aren't home for delivery, they can leave the box at your door. This is what I had to do since I worked full time. I really liked the idea behind this service but I quickly learned that even if you spent $50-80 on a box, opening each box was disappointing. There would only be four or five items. Not like shopping at Safeway, where you can come home with four bags for $100.00 (still too expensive, I know). Pros: Easy to use website Cons: High prices for those on tight or single budgets for what you get. Delivery can be spotty. Hidden fees not disclosed. Update: after reading reviews I see that customer service has gone downhill since I tried the service. Same complaints that I have -- expensive products. Pro tip for those comparing to farmer's markets: Be wary when shopping at farmer's markets. Vendors often make false claims that their products are local - when they really aren't! read more

I've been a customer for about 3 years now. I am medically disabled and cannot get out to go shopping whenever I want or need to so their home delivery is such a blessing. Great variety of products. They are not always local but they show where the product is coming from, that way I can decide if I am comfortable with the shipping carbon footprint. Produce and perishable prices, selection and availability vary from week to week. I have found their prices to be slightly lower than Planet Organic and their quality to be monumentally higher than Safeway, Sobeys, SuperStore, etc. They are not perfect, sometimes mistakes get made but I have always received fast and caring service. read more

I came across The Organic Box via twitter and I have to say, I am thrilled. I don't know what the price difference is between them and buying organic at a store or farmers market because I have never purchased them there. Yup, we were organic virgins. We decided we wanted to eat healthier, I saw some information on this company and decided it was a good place to start. The system works like this: On your delivery day (lets say Friday for this example) they will bring a box of goodies to your door. You give them last week's empty box. If you aren't going to be home, you can make other arrangements such as leaving it with a neighbour, in a cooler etc. That weekend, you receive an email from them with the list of produce for your next Friday delivery. You go online and decide what you want to keep and what you want to exchange. Don't feel like Chard? take it off your list and choose something else. For a Friday delivery, you have until Wednesday at noon to make any changes. When your delivery comes, it will have all the produce you requested. What we have found is that it allows us to try not only different type of produce but different "brands" or "makes" if you will. For example, I had never tasted banana potatoes before - they are great! They have several types of pears, apples, oranges, mushrooms etc. Another thing we have noticed is we have begun to appreciate how many preservatives are used in non-organic food - the produce goes bad faster than the stuff we buy in the store but I don't view that as a bad thing. Who knew that was the TRUE shelf life of an apple?? My husband and I order the single pack ($35) and we find that although it is not enough to last the whole week, we eat out enough that the family pack would be way too much. I was excited to try the organic box....would never use again or refer to anyone.... our first box came at 10pm...not acceptable...thats late! Cucumber was rotten.... We then asked if we could pay the difference and get the bigger box for the rest of our trial....they said no....hmmm I think it would of been agood business move...we thought the couples was too small and wanted to see if we could use the bigger one.... Second box wasnt bad but everything turned really really fast... third box the tomatos and watermelon arrive rotten....where is the QC??? I was in a rut with produce, always buying the same 5 veg, alternating between just a few fruit. Uninspired, eating out a lot out of boredom, losing my healthy focus. Then I heard about this cool little business, delivering produce to the door once a week (or every other week if that's your preference). A box full of organic wonders, from as near as is possible depending on the season. Options to switch out items that don't tempt you with those that do....including local fruit wine and beer. 4 boxes later and cooking is a pleasure again, an adventure again. What to do with fiddleheads, with fava beans, with bok choy? Experiment, try something new. Mmmm. I can't wait to do fava again, and bok choy, but will likely leave those tedious little fiddleheads to someone else to prepare. My taste buds are very happy. So am I. Want to try it? Register for a spot on their route, there is frequently a waiting list. We had the worst experience with the Organic Box. First they screwed up the billing and way overcharged us on our credit card. They were not able to accommodate condo/apartment dwellers as our delivery time was set at 3:30 pm (while we were both at work) and the only option was "hiding the box" (we live downtown), arranging with neighbours (awkward) or leaving the box in the lobby (no thanks). After one delivery and one pickup we canceled. The produce was tasty but didn't last long and we found it expensive. Downtown farmer's market works better for us! read more

I've been subscribed to the organic box for about 3 months now. I really enjoy having a never ending supply of fresh fruits and vegetables in my house. As a dad of 3 it's hard to get to the store to pickup vegetables all the time, so this has been the ultimate convenience. The boxes are always well put together and the one time we ordered something and it came less than perfect (chives that were a little old) they sent an apology note in the box and gave them to us for free! Pretty amazing levels of caring and customer service. It's easy enough to change your order online if you get too many root vegetables and can't go through them fast enough. I am a busy person, who enjoys healthy food that tastes like food. I am not often able to go to farmers markets and the organic box has given me ability to eat both locally (as much as they can) as well and organically. The service they offer is great, the quality of food is amazing. The online aspect makes the purchasing and planning of meals both easy and creative. I especially enjoy how they encourage to try new and different fruits and vegetables. They are continually adding new items to their portfolio and are now caring bread, grains, chocolate and COFFEE. I've been getting the Organic Box since just after they started about five years ago. They consistently deliver fresh, high quality organic produce and dairy. They also have great follow up customer service if I ever have any issues. I haven't ordered any of the meat products, and rarely order the grocery items so I can't say how those items are. But, I get milk, eggs and yogurt added to the box each week. Having these staples delivered weekly eliminates those extra trips to the grocery store. Yes, I enjoy going to the farmer's market (who doesn't?!) but I can't go regularly enough to get what I need on a weekly basis. Yes, the box costs more than the same items at the farmer's market but no, I won't be cancelling my Organic Box in the foreseeable future! My husband and I have just finished the trial box $60/box every other week. To date we have picked up our order at the warehouse as we had running around to do in the south end each weekend anyways, the staff are always friendly. We consume a good amount of fruits and vegetables in our household and found it easy to consume all the fruit in a week and vegetables in one to two. I found the fruit is usually best eaten quickly but easily lasts a week, the vegetables are amazingly fresh, I have been able to eat salad well over a week after pick up its that fresh. So we have been getting the weekly condo delivery and it is great, we have actually started getting the canning produce we eat some as is and I hot water bath the rest, exceptional. As for the delivery, I made a buzzer code note on my account and they buzz at the same time each week and I come home to a big box of fresh produce. read more

I recently decided to give The Organic Box a try, and I'm very happy with it. I enjoy popping by the grocery store after work, usually a few times a week, and end up buying a lot of things I don't need (similar to what another reviewer has said). Produce ends up going bad in my fridge because I usually forget it's there, and I somehow end up with a hoard of opened bottles of various condiments and sauces in my fridge that I want "to try" and end up hating. However, with the Organic Box, I feel more compelled to use everything that is delivered (kind of like a challenge to myself). The produce arrives in great condition, and I don't find the cost to be all that much more than going to the organic section of a grocery store (prices are comparable to the Farmer's Market). Plus, the amount I've saved from avoiding impulse purchases has been huge! Tips: - If you are a home of two adults (like me), I would recommend getting the Singles Box delivered once every week. We chose every other week for our trial subscription but, as pretty heavy fruit and veggie eaters, this only sustains us for one full week. - If there is an item (or several) projected to be in a given week's box, you can substitute it with something of equal value - The box is made of re-inforced carboard (coated with a wax-like substance), so I'm not sure how well dairy would fare if the box is left outside in the summer months - Not everything they carry is local; however, you do have the option to choose all-local if you so choose (you will have to substitute some items, and your pickings will be slimer in the winter) - They can also add things like flour (local), chocolate, kombucha (canned tea drink) to your box at an extra charge Try the trial subscription - you only have to commit to 3 boxes (3 deliveries) and, if you don't like it, can stop and not go for the larger commitment of 13. I haven't even received the box yet. I signed up, wanted to pay immediately after deciding which items I want in my box (so I could have a few days to deal with things if payment wasn't received, etc.), but they pull out money from your account on their set day (annoying, but typical nowadays). I waited a week and a few days for payment to be pulled out, and then for my delivery to be shipped on the coming Wednesday. Well, payment was pulled out, but they took an additional $20 for a box deposit. I understand the need for box deposit, but never, in the week of checking my account daily (out of excitement and showing friends to recommend the service), did my total EVER display the additional $20 deposit. Now, on the day of payment, my total says $66.10, and under it, another charge of $20 (not listed as a deposit, just an additional charge), bringing the total to $86.10 I even called the phone number, and asked why my total had an additional $20, and was heatedly told "It is a ONE TIME charge." I really am just blown away. I was told that the deposit was listed on the initial sign-up page, so I went through the sign up process to double check, and sure enough, after 4 pages (one which even explained the cost of each box), I came to a page with a $20 deposit listed. Which is no problem. But why was the total hidden the ENTIRE week, until the very day payment had to be made. Why couldn't I jut pre-pay, hit a bump in the road, figure it out, and go on with life? Not speak to a very defensive service rep who left me with the impression that if I can't afford a $20 deposit (which I can, it just wasn't listed), I shouldn't be using the service. To me, hidden fees and unexplained charges don't seem to help with the inflated cost of living right now, and to be treated as if I should know absolutely everything about their company, when I am brand new to this whole thing is ridiculous. And now she cancelled my account, so I can't even rectify the issue. Not that I am too worried about it. Some people may love it, and maybe I will try the service later, but right now, I am extremely put off. read more

I do not mind if there are errors, it is human. I only hope that if there are errors, the process to deal with them is effective and simple. I take a biweekly delivery of a singles box. I can't always make it to the farmers markets and this is a great way to still be able to obtain fresh organic produce, much of it local, including eggs and dairy (and goat dairy - yay!) In addition to the produce (of which the selection varies - even in the winter) they carry other organic grocery and convenience items. Its super convenient for me, and my boxes are always packed with healthy ingredients that I choose based on what is available. How it works - you sign up, pay a extra $20 refundable box deposit up front with your first order, pick your payment method and indicate the address you'd like it delivered to (I get mine at work). You can choose among a few types of boxes - depending on the size and a delivery schedule weekly, biweekly. The $5 delivery fee is waived if you spend $50. The singles box presently is $38 worth of local. organic and/or transitional produce. Additional produce, bakery, eggs, cheese, dry goods are all available to round it out and fill the quota for free delivery. You commit to a trial (3 times) or regular (13 times) delivery. You can post holiday stops for those weeks you won't need it. A few days before the delivery, they notify you and then you go to the website and see what is on offer in the standard box. Then you check the weekly produce listing to see if you might want to make any substitutions (ie squash instead of potatoes, or apples instead of pomegranates) When you've made the choices for your basic box, then you add any other items you want. There's a few days window to make changes if you want. Once I missed the deadline and received the standard box, which I hadn't tweaked to my liking,, and it was still good. Once something was missing from my box and a credit was promptly applied to my account. The service is friendly, helpful, and the menu of items offered provides me with the basics for my personal eating plan. There's always a little newsletter in every box, and the website has a blog. I would love nothing more than to recommend a company that purports to be on the side of both the customer and the farmer, but the customer service team of Pat and Harmonie are so unfriendly, so unkind, and completely unhelpful that I have to urge you to look elsewhere. Don't expect this team to be people friendly because they are not. I repeatedly asked to speak to the owners, and that request was repeatedly denied. Another really important issue for those of us in the middle of pandemic--perhaps suffering financial hardship--is this company's pricing: They are the most expensive grocery portal in Alberta. On top of that, they force you to pay a mandatory donation fee with every, single order. This is not optional if you want food. Frankly, when you're the one who needs the donation, this is a tough one. You can easily find other venues with the same or similar products for a lot less. I have! read more

My husband and I have had horrible experience with the supposedly 'fresh' produce in every single one of the grocery stores in Edmonton. Produce was going bad well before a week was up and was tasteless to begin with. We finally gave up and tried The Organic Box. We have now been using The Organic Box for more than a month. We get a Singles box but I regularly add more on. My husband and I couldn't be happier :) it is just like shopping at the outdoor markets. Indeed that is because a lot of the local produce and dairy comes from the people who also sell at the farmers markets. The produce we receive is always fresh and always makes it to the next delivery and very often beyond. How nice it is to receive milk that tastes like milk!!!!!! We have been very happy with their service, their delivery (even though it is not at the best time for us we realize they have to fit everyone in as best they can). With respect to their service, they have always been attentive. If I have something that was not available they always make it up to me in the next order or give our account a credit if they continue not to be able to provide the product by the time the next order comes around. In addition, if they provided us with something as a substitution that I was not crazy about they always leave me a little present of something extra that they know I like in the next order. Cost wise our local producers obviously give the Box a deal because those savings are passed on to us. It some cases it is less expensive for me to have my product come through the Organic Box than to purchase at the Farmers Market. At the worse it is exactly the same cost. I can't say enough about the Organic Box. They are absolutely awesome and we will never go back to purchasing produce or dairy products at any of the box grocery Stores. read more
