If it's not The White Swan, it's The Black Swan. If it's not that, it's The Wellington. And then of course, The Prince Regent. Why is it never The Flat-Breasted Floozie? ;) Anyway, this one The White Swan is a very likeable, friendly real ale pub next to that odd "crooked-spire" church in Chesterfield. Positive proof that good real ale pubs do not have to be grubby and grimy, as CAMRA sometimes wants us to believe. The selection of hand-pumped ales is certainly more than decent, about 10 available when I visited in February of 2015, whiling the afternoon away following a trip to Bolsover Castle. Staff know their ales, and are very friendly, if maybe a tad hipster-ish. But they'll warm up to you more after the second pint. You will warm up to them, too. Literally and figuratively. If you're a real ale fan, this is the place to go in Chesterfield. It's about a 7-10 minute walk from the station (which itself is not in the city centre - this pub is).

The drive to the restaurant was lovely and scenic, going down dark and winding country roads until suddenly we drive around a corner and The Devonshire Arms appeared! We'd got there a little early and we sat down by the bar for some drinks. The menu was displayed on a chalkboard by the seating area and it all looked yummy! The dining area was quite small but very nice and cosy. The kitchen was open and you could see the chefs chopping and cooking away which I quite liked. I chose the rabbit and pheasant terrine with grape chutney as my starter; it came with onion bread and the slice of terrine was huge! I really wanted to finish it, but I couldn't as there was no way I'd be have enough room for my main! For the main, I had venison steak served with new potatoes (usually served with mash which I couldn't have as it had milk/cream in it) and braised red cabbage. The steak was pink and cooked to perfection and the red cabbage was sweet but with a little tart edge to it. I didn't have a dessert but the rest of the party did - my boyfriend had a deconstructed banana cheesecake and his sister had a brownie (I overheard her saying it was the best brownie she'd ever tasted!). All of the staff were really nice, especially the lady who served us that night, she was really lovely and very attentive. The Devonshire Arms fully deserves it's awards and hope it gets more in the future. If you're ever around the Sheffield area and want to venture out of the city centre for some food make sure you come here. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect meal.

Here we were delighted to see that the same quality, cleanliness, comfort and attention to detail has been maintained. This is credit to the owners and also their great staff. Our supper and breakfast was prepared with care, served by lovely staff (our evening server was a school teacher....just wish i'd had her when I was at school!) who helped out and had a wonderful sunny disposition. The presentation of the cooked breakfast was excellent. A very quiet room with a great comfy bed, linen and pillows made for a great nights sleep and also some enjoyable canoodling. The bathroom is vast and spotlessly clean. We woke to snow on the hills in the distance and had a leisurely breakfast. They even had a decent quantity of fresh milk in the fridge! The owners take pride in their hospitality and it shows in everything they offer. We will return....
