This is the only Korean restaurant I can find and they were out of galbi when I visited, which is my favorite!

I had the kimchi tofu jigae and the kimchi pancake which was pretty big but tasted amazing. In the jigae they also added a poached egg into it which gave it a nice taste, and the spicy factor was perfect; not too spicy. The service is average bit efficient, the food came quite quickly and another good thing is that banchan is served complimentary here, which doesn't seem to be the case with many UK korean restaurants. They also have some Japanese dishes on the menu like sushi, gyoza, temaki and teriyaki. There is parking right outside and it's pay and display but very cheap: 50p for 30 mins and £1 for an hour. The atmosphere is very casual like a cafe, so it's great for lunch as well as dinner. Overall, authentic and tasty Korean food that's well priced and made to a great standard.

If I said to you, you can go to a restaurant and cook your own meal, you might think that sounds…read morelike crazy talk. But, here's the thing -- it's one seriously fun night out. If you're bored of the usual system (order, wait for chef to cook, waiter delivers, yawn) then Bulgogi might be worth checking out. I confess, this isn't the first time I've had Korean BBQ, however -- it is Leeds' first and only place to indulge, and indulge you should. At least once. If you're not au fait with the system, allow me to explain. You order the set menu -- the only available choice -- and the staff swiftly bring out your first course of five. To begin, you get a few veggie sushi rolls and gyoza. Then comes the first BBQ course: slices of pork and beef. These are accompanied by three choices of sauce (soy, chilli, and tamarind), and about eight or so side dishes. (Which counts as the second course, I think.) Use the lettuce leaves as the base, chuck in a few bits and bobs in from the sides, add some sauce, BBQ up some meat slices, and get it all mixed in together for mouthfuls of marvellous-ness. My favourite sauce was the tamarind, and my favourite side was the spicy cucumber. You also get a healthy portion of sticky rice, which I'd advise to ration -- you get full so quickly! We, foolishly, assumed meat course numero uno was the main course. Oh dear. A second, even better, course of pork and beef slices then arrived. I don't know what had been done to the beef, but it was delectable -- and the beauty is you can cook it to your own taste! I complimented myself many times on my own barbecue skills. Then came the course of seafood! My word.... By this time I was absolutely stuffed, but we battled on. Because, food. The prawns were amazing; I don't usually like them, but these were delicious. Finally, and this one was a freebie, we were gifted a lamb chop! This only happened because the chef is trying out ideas for a Christmas special, but we were blown away. If he serves that come Christmas you'll be happy as Elf -- I think it was my favourite. Pro tip: Go in over the next few days as I'm sure the chef talked about trying it out on other customers with more marinade. Drinks-wise, I absolutely recommend the plum and honey tea (so, so good in this cold weather) and the Hite Korean lager -- it was really sweet and crisp. I absolutely loved it. Both were great to accompany the food. They also have a few Korean soft drinks that all sounded delicious. I'm a big fan when you can order beyond half a diet coke when it comes to beverages. All in all, I'm surely going back. It's fun, it's fresh, it's tasty. All the staff were lovely and for £23 roughly, I don't think it's a bad deal!

I didn't get to experience the afternoon menu as it was a bit too pricey for me at the time but i went there for lunch. Which only cost me about £10 for the meat and sides. As tradition i had soju (Korean alcoholic drink of choice) which was a bit expensive (i think it was £11 but can't remember and can't find receipt) and this is half the reason of why i didn't give full 5 stars because i loved this place. When the next day went to the Asian supermarket few streets down I spotted the same bottle of soju for 3-4 pounds. Wasn't happy. The other half of the reason that didn't gave a full 5 stars was because the meat was frozen, that didn't stop me from grilling the heck out of it and enjoying every bite but I think it would have been a little better if they had actually defrosted it first or being fresh. Again it was lunch time so it might be different in the afternoon. The sides were lovely and went really well with the meat. I was very happy i got to experience 3 different types of Kimchi of which they make themselves because when i was talking to the waitress she mentioned that they were making at the time in the kitchen a fresh batch. The service was very good and the waitresses were really lovely and helpful. And the whole atmosphere was very nice. Definitely going there again. Small warning: Check their opening times if you plan to go there because they close for few hours between lunchtime and afternoon/evening.

The portions were also small in relation to the cost, especially the kimchi which was just a spoonful which was surprising for a casual restaurant as opposed to a high end or formal one. No banchan with the bibimbap was also disappointing, as it's usually served with it or at least available on the side menu. I prefer a liquid egg yolk on bibimbap, but this restaurant gives it fried which isn't as tasty, but with extra bibimbap sauce it was ok. They don't give much but you can ask for more. The staff were very polite and friendly, efficient and the tables had a button to press to call the waiter. It's up a stairs but they do have tables downstairs for wheelchair access, and card is also accepted. The online booking process was very easy to do and very handy. Much better than having to phone in. Overall, decent Korean food and friendly staff, but small portions and costly prices for a restaurant with a casual atmosphere so not exactly filling or easy on the wallet. They are the only Korean place in York as far as I'm aware, so it's worth a try if you're into Korean food.

Good Korean food in York, hip... hip... hooray!…read more I love Korean food, and the fact that it varies so heavily from place to place... if it's a good Korean restaurant then there's actually a good chance you'll find something there you like better than another, with the opposite also being true. By default I love the various Kim Bap offering here, think Korean sushi with beef or random other fillings, offerings here... I'm sure there's plenty of places that serve it in the UK, but my usual Korean haunts in London don't actually serve it which I've always found odd. The oddest thing for me here is that I don't love their Bulgogi... normally that would send me running for the hills, it's just such a staple of Korean food (at least in the mainstream), but it wasn't bad and the overall consistency and quality always wins out in the end. Besides, as outlined in my opening, it's often different between the various restaurants so who am I to say which place has it right? (Not that there's really such a thing as long as it's not bad.) Another oddity (again, not bad... just different) is that in most Korean places I've been to the selection of side vegetables you get (which aren't free with a meal here by the way) are served room temperature... here they are actually warm, but it's a bit different overall... the little sweat beans, whatever the pearls of delicious may be called, are uber tasty though so I can't complain. :-) The actual kimchi is also a bit different, but again... not bad. (At least they avoid the trap of serving really cold side vegetables here... chilled is one thing, but I've been to a few Korean restaurants where they feel like they're practically straight out of the freezer.) The Spicy Quid is a must for me here... oh that sauce, that glorious sauce! I honestly take whatever is left of my meal at the end and soak up every last bit of sauce... I've also had the Spicy Octopus, which actually didn't have the same type of sauce... similar, and good in it's own right, but stick with the Spicy Squid and you can't go wrong my friends. For contrast there's also a Crispy Sweet Chicken dish of some variety (so sorry, just not remembering names today!) that was good... not my thing personally, as in almost anywhere, but I can very much see why people like this (as did those in there with us). Conversely I wasn't a fan of the Teriyaki Chicken though, it wasn't actually bad, but it didn't pack as much punch as I would have hoped. All of the above said it may seem like I'm not actually too keen on this place, but it's actually on my hit list for each time I'm in York for a few days which hopefully speaks for itself. The place itself is very cute, with food presentation to match, but it's quite small as there's only a handful of tables... if you're heart is set on here try and book in advance to avoid disappointment. The owner is actually a really friendly guy as well, as is everyone else that works there. I'm so glad to see this place doing well in York, the location move and being open for dinner is a newer venture, so give them a chance, tell a friend, and hopefully the lot of you will be hooked too! (Just leave me a space for when I'm in town please.) ;-)

Well, that was....odd…read more I ordered a kimchi stew with tofu over noodles as a lunch box on a weekday. It came out piping hot, much appreciated on a cold winter day. That was the best I could say for it however. The noodles were your basic instant ramen, which is fine. The tofu has red chili powder on it and yet wasn't spicy and barely had any flavor. The kimchi tasted like stewed cabbage. Don't get me wrong, I love cabbage. It just wasn't what I had expected. It was missing all of the tangy spicy depth of flavor I usually associate with kimchi. My dining partner had beef bulgolgi bowl which was much better, with interesting flavors and different colors. The restaurant is odd, with the entrance off of a hard-to-find side alley. It was very dimly lit which made it hard to see what you were eating. The staff were friendly and the service fast.
