My family was in town from the Twin Cities for a baseball tournament, and I spent some time searching for the right spot to bring a group - The Old Mill Restaurant immediately caught my attention, and I'm so glad it did. We had a group of seven adults and a baby, and when I called late in the afternoon, they were able to accommodate us at exactly the time we desired. From the moment I pulled up, I had a good feeling. The exterior has that historic charm, and inside it's beautifully updated while still keeping the character of the building. We were seated in a semi-private room overlooking the dam, which made the whole experience feel even more special. The service was fantastic - attentive without being overbearing - and the food absolutely delivered. Our table ordered a variety of dishes, from the smash burger to salmon and rice, shrimp, steak, and even the French onion soup. Everything was spot on. And I have to mention the dirty martini with hand-stuffed blue cheese olives... incredible. Every single person in our group enjoyed their meal, the drinks, and the atmosphere. Highly recommend - this will definitely be our go-to spot the next time we're in town. read more

Super awesome. Ambiance was excellent. Beautiful building sitting next to a waterfall. Seating is both inside and out and both are great. Service was perfect. No issues very attentive. Food. Ribeye was cooked perfectly. Poutine was on point. I would suggest adding the meat. It's a nice touch. Stuffed dates were incredible. I realize it sounds odd, but the flavors are a great combo. Arrived at our reservation time 6:15 pm (Friday) only to be left standing in the doorway and ignored for over 10 mins. Once seated, and asked if we would like to order an appetizer we were told they were down to one fryer so they are limiting fried foods therefore unable to order the cheese curds or onion tanglers. 45 mins later we were allowed to consume our appetizer and salad. However, our drinks were removed from the table after our second refill. @ 1hr 20 mins our bland Prime rib on one plate & potatoe skins on one salad plate arrived without any seasoning or condiments. The salt shaker top fell off onto the plate but was empty! Upon completion of our meal @ 1hr 50 mins, 1 refilled glass was returned to the table followed immediately by our check. 2 soft drinks @ $5.60, 1 shrimp cocktail @ $15.95, 1 bruschetta @ $11.95, 2 old mill cut prime rib @ $105.90. Non-cash Total: $154.89. No prices are listed on the menu for the entree's other than "market price"! This amount far exceeds any market price for any 10 oz prime rib. read more

Exceptional service, exceptional food, exceptional ambiance. We were in town to check out the Spam museum and went here for dinner. We had a reservation and were seated right away. Servers were knowledgeable and friendly and always on top of things. The trio was awesome as was their special, the sockeye salmon. Do yourself a favor and just order the Spam dunkers. The good first- nice looking restaurant. I would have love to try a steak or prime rib but now you will learn why we went outside to the backyard and got food out there. The bad- waitress comes tells us the specials and take our drink and app orders. The old fashions we ordered came and they were terrible. Plain ice and not mixed. We watch the bartender just dump the select bourbon on top of the mixture he concocted. After a taste we stirred for a few minutes and long story short I didn't finish it as it was a total disappointment from someplace that bosts about the OF. Meanwhile our waitress decided to literally wait on every table before taking our dinner order. When she finally returned 20 minutes later we just closed our tab and decided to try outside for better service. VERY DISAPPOINTING! I don't care about price but if you can't wait on your tables find a new job. Maybe someday we will try inside again but sit at the bar to see if we get better service. read more

One of my two favorite places in Austin! Came for the filet and was not disappointed! We shared the SPAM dippers; when in Rome! They were surprisingly good. We both had filets, both were a little undercooked for us. This was quickly addressed no problem. So good! Veggies, salad, and soup were all good too. Well I ventured out. Rarely do I leave the hotel for dinner if there is a restaurant in the hotel. The old mill was recommended by a co-worker. First off the setting is amazing. The Old Mill is on a small river with an old dam sorta thing. I sat at the bar where I was served immediately. I ordered a Grain Belt beer (a local favorite) it was kinda a medium bodied beer. Absolutely great. I ordered Spam dippers as an appetizer. I rarely order appetizers and have NEVER eaten Spam. It was spectacular. The filet minion was really good, not the best. That spot is still reserved for Omaha Prime. The asparagus was stringy and flavorless then replaced with cold hard asparagus that had a sorta chemical taste. But I will always eat asparagus no matter how bad it is. The au gratin potatoes were amazing. Overall this was a great experience. Nobody is perfect, The naysayers can my hiney. Oh, and BTW there is a smoking area off to the side of the patio where there is live music. read more

I called and made a reservation and told them it was for our 45th Anniversary. Must have been the bartender that answered by his curt attitude and he said we have a 6:15. I booked it. We showed up for the reservation and the place was quite busy. I could see the couple in front of us could not get a table due to having no reservation. It was obviously the bartender once again no hostess. I gave him my name, he grabbed two menus and rushed us to a corner table, turned the light on dropped the menus on the table, told us the waitress would take care of us and rushed off. Seemed like he was completely overwhelmed and frustrated and really had no time to be doing someone else's job was the general attitude. Waitress showed up in about 10 minutes and fetched our required beverages and asked if we were interested in an appetizer which we were not. 10 minutes later she brought us our drinks and we ordered our dinners. She was very nice but very busy. She brought us our house salads which were tasty but a bit short on the veggie mix. Bread sticks were warm and soft. When our steaks arrived, hers was bloody and she ordered it medium. She flagged down the waitress who responded promptly and politely. I asked her to take my plate and keep it warm until my wife's was ready so we could eat together. I told her it was our 45th anniversary and she said congratulations! Once the food was returned we ate and enjoyed the steak, potato and broccoli as well as asparagus spears. All was tasty. We paid our 69.00 dollar bill and left. Overall our special celebration was made to feel more like an inconvenience for the staff than a special dinner. We have eaten here before and always enjoyed the happy hour snacks and beverages. This place is a true gem in Austin, MN. The inside is very nice and overlooks what I assume is a river. We decided to come here after going to the Spam Museum, so of course we tried the spam dunkers. If you don't try anything else, try the dunkers, they were amazingly fried and the spicy dipping sauce added a nice kick. I also tried the fish sandwich which had a very nice sized piece of haddock, and the sandwich itself was also good. read more

Casual dining in such a wonderful setting ... we could enjoy a visual of the river as it flows near and over spillway (the historic building was a grain mill of some kind). The appetizers included a very innovative dish called stuffed dates (savory) Yum. I'd greatly recommended an order of these. Presentation was gorgeous too. Our server Meghan helped us decide. We had some wine from their excellent list yet the bar offered a variety of mixed drinks and beers. Entre options were great too. We just had an all around delightful experience. Next time will try something other than the New York strip, expensive, very tough and both had a lot of grizzle. sold as 16 oz. that maybe had 8 oz. edible after cutting off the fat and waste. Ok, now that you have secured your dinner reservation (CLOSED Sun/Mon) let me give you the run down. They prefer reservations. It's clearly a small business so give them a heads up that you are looking to dine at their restaurant. Every table is a good table. Every server is very nice and professional. They offer a nice list of beers and wine. Also cocktails are available. Inquire about the fish special. I selected salmon, which was an on menu offering. VERY good. Cooked to perfection and not dry. It's cooked very slightly under, which is how you are supposed to cook fish. It was lovely. A nice hollandaise sauce and asparagus accompanied the dish. You also get to select 2 sides with the salmon. It's a very fairly priced dinner entree! I have not had dessert, but they look wonderful! Do try their breadsticks. They are absolutely fantastic and seem to be fried because they are crisp and quite flavorful. Totally divine! This is such a great restaurant in Austin, Minnesota. This is the classiest place to eat in Austin. Those passing through or visiting from a large city might not qualify this as five stars (to those who frequent upscale establishments, this place is probably just "average") but for "SPAMtown," this is pretty impressive. Dress nicely and enjoy a whole evening at the Old Mill... I loved the fact that you're not rushed... they really do understand the whole concept of fine dining, at least in terms of time frame... you'll want to plan to be here at least 90 minutes, maybe more. First off, the location - just a little bit out of the way - is quaint and beautiful (when you make reservations, request a table with a view of the river). There are a couple intimate dining rooms and a charming little bar with some really excellent imports on tap (and always changing). Nice selection of wines, as well. Regarding the regular menu, this is more of a steakhouse... their claim to fame is prime rib and it might be the best prime rib I've had in my entire life. Amazing. My dining companion on a recent night was also able to find an amazing gluten-free entree. One drawback (alluded to in a previous review) is that many of the appetizers, and even some of the entrees, are deep fried. A place as charming and classy as this could definitely do without the fried foods we find everywhere else. But I quickly forgot about this when they brought out the dessert tray (why don't more places utilize a dessert tray anymore!?) ... all of the desserts are homemade (and delicious) and you can enjoy them with a wide variety of cocktails or fancy coffees. This is as fancy as it gets in Austin. And while it may not be as classy as a joint in Manhattan, it's pretty reliably solid, and deserving of five stars for this region. The deep fryer clearly gets quite a workout given the menu, and it feels like a restaurant with designs on fine dining but they're not quite willing to commit to it. However, where was the complimentary basket of bread or breadsticks or even crackers? We looked around and no one had bread, so we knew we hadn't been missed. They also have a great wine list and very cool wine cellar. You can even host a private party in the wine cellar, ask for a tour. I am not one to use these review sites! To tech advanced for me. This place deserved my review. We went for a business lunch last week, Friday. We were sat in the dining room with a wall full of windows to a beautiful waterfall, not to mention the Christmas decorations make you feel like you're in a Hallmaek movie. Our server, Reagen explained that one of the owners did the decorating herself and I couldn't believe it! Our waitress was busy in her section but maintained outstanding customer service. She was quick, very helpful for newcomers, talkative with the group, we weren't waiting on anything. I had a candied chicken salad that was marvelous! This place is so over rated! We took friends and so our party was 6. Our waitress must have thought we were all deaf. She yelled at us all night. The background music was hard rock, turned down soft. Strange! The walleye I had was doused in Sauce. The potatoes were supposed to be au graten, but were little cubes in milk, microwaved. Horrible just horrible. I was nauseous that night and the next day. Hence, "the sauce " on fish not so fresh. Never to return. read more

This is a nice place with a good atmosphere. I had the prime rib. It was great. We were here with a group of 14. Kids and adults. My only complaint is that my son ordered a skippy burger and he took one bite and sent it back. He ordered a regular burger that he liked. My complaint is that they charged me for the burger that he did not like. This is the first place that has ever charged me for something that we did not like. I did ask for that charge to be removed, but they said no because we ordered it. If you are looking to try something out of your comfort zone, don't do it here. You will be charged. read more
